The food was excellent, I have nothing bad to say! The best bruschetta I've ever had, among other items on the menu. The waitstaff was very attentive and was never too much. The one criticism I had was that the hostess was not as pleasant as she should have been.

  • Pros: decor, waitstaff
  • Cons: hostess, a bit loud

Great food! Must try if you are into Italian Food. Few things that is a must to try: Brick oven baked homemade pizza, Spaghetti with meatballs, Calamari and the famous chocolate brownies with caramel and ice cream. You will Love it!

  • Pros: Many tasty dishes and drinks.
  • Cons: Can get busy on the weekends.

Nice place but both myself and my guest felt the food was so so and in fact both independently said we didn't feel great the next day. However great wine, very attentive service and friendly staff.

If you're in the mood for Italian go Capellini's downtown San Mateo. is pretty decent. They have reasonable prices and the menu is pretty standard for an upscale Italian place. We started with the calamari which was very good and came with a sauce. I had a stuffed ravioli with a lite cream sauce which was good and my husband had traditional spaghetti and meatballs and he liked it. Desserts are are great. I had the the Lemon Tart and it was really yummy. And my husband had the brownie w/ice cream and said it was great.Overall,it is a good place to have pretty good Italian food. It can get a little noisey. My husband and I will go back and try more things on the menu, the prices are a little on the high side. The staff was friendly.

I was meeting a friend for dinner who was running late, but the hostess was very gracious and said not to worry. We were seated right away after my friend arrived. Barely had we sat down though, when water glasses were whisked onto tabletops, olive oil poured and fresh sourdough bread basket set down. The caprese salad was light and refreshing. We both ordered the linguine with jumbo shrimp, garlic bread crumbs, olives and tomatoes. The flavors blended together well - definitely will be ordering this dish again! Dessert was a chocolate ganache-style cake, vanillla gelato and raspberry drizzles - was surprised at how light the chocolate cake tasted. Also, water glasses were subtlely refilled all evening without request; we stayed past closing but never felt rushed out. Overall, would definitely rate this as a wonderful neighborhood gem - both in terms of food and service!

  • Pros: neighborhood atmosphere, food, service
  • Cons: parking

Great food, reasonable prices, and wonderful ambiance. Try the oysters & the carpaccio for appetizers, awesome! What more could you ask for?

We have been traveling through California and searched the web to find a place to eat tonight. We came across this website and the reviews regarding Capellini Ristorante. We went and could not have been more pleased!

From the moment we walked in we were struck with the pleasant staff and the romantic ambiance. Candles adorned each table with warm lighting throughout the rest of the room. The wine list offered numerous California wines. As an appetizer we ordered the Bruschetta. It was the best we have ever had! I wish I could describe it elegantly, but all I can say is YUM!! I could just about make a meal out it! I ordered Linquine Con Vongole Blanco (linguine with clams in a white wine cream sauce) and it was fantastic. My husband ordered lasagne. He said it was nearly as good as mine (I believe he was lying to not hurt my feelings)...He repeatedly kept saying how wonderful it was. For dessert we ordered the Creme Brulee. WOW!! I have never had Creme Brulee with strawberries. It was phenomenal!! This was one of those meals we kept talking about how good it was! For everything we ordered (plus sodas) we paid $50 before tip. We found that to be quite reasonable for the food an service that we recieved. We can't recommend this restaurant enough!! If you are in San Mateo (or nearby) you have got to enjoy a meal with them!

First off, I have never had a bad meal here. The last thing I had here was a risotto that was really good. The other selling point for me is that you can order a half order of most things to keep portions manageable if you are watching your weight. But there are two reasons I try to avoid this.

I work across the street and get out of work at just the right time for dinner. I ordered to take out many times with no problems and then one day, they started charging me for take out. No explanation on the menu, nothing. The fee isn't a lot, but would they charge me if I ordered at their restaurant and asked to take the rest home? (same packaging, I'd be fine if they didn't give me paper napkins or silverware if I didn't ask, I was taking it home).

The second reason is that I went there with a group of friends and we were seated in the back. For some, it might me be secluded and away from the noise (it can get loud in there) but we all felt like we were in the boondocks. I don't think we were the only large group that night, but we felt like we were being hidden because we were all ladies and had identified ourselves as moms.

First we were ignored while the hostess puttered around-when she finally came over-she didn't even say hello-just stared blankly at us. OUr waiter was equally inattentive-taking our orders, and then not returning until we were done eating when he asked if we wanted another drink. DOn't waste your time here.
