Best in the City!
by mluerra
Simply the best pizza in the city. You'll have to go to New York to find anything comparable. If you want amazing pizza in a warm family atmosphere, this is the place!
- Pros: Food, Atmosphere
- Cons: None

What a romantic, authentic Italian restaurant. Great ambiance and great dishes. Highly recommend to anyone seeking the true Italian experience.
Best off the beaten path Italian food in North Beach
by sfnonprofitguy
Excellent marinara sauce. They have fabulous house wine, in face, any of their red wines are fantastical. The manicotti and lasagne are superb, along with any of the pizza. Our party of 9 was very pleased with all dinner and entree dishes along with the appetizers. This place does have a wait, although you can drink wine and wait in line- fantastic! The desserts add to the amazing dinner and appetizers. This is an excellent place to bring a big dinner party.
- Pros: Marinara sauce, red wines
- Cons: The wait
A must for visitors, and residents too!

While I lived in northern California for years, and visited San Francisco MANY!!! times, I have never actually lived in the city. Currently I live in Japan. On a visit, a friend living in the Marina area insisted we go to Tommaso's. She prepared me by saying we would probably have to wait in line, that we could get wine while in line, and the restaurant is in a somewhat seedy area.
With this briefing, I was prepared. Boy, was it worth it! Had we brought children, I might have given it a second thought. However, for adults I say run, do not walk (but be careful crossing the streets!) to Tommaso's.
We did wait in line on a Friday evening but, being San Francisco knowledgeable, I had brought a jacket, which was necessary. We did wait, but that was actually fairly pleasurable, as we chatted with the other people waiting. Also, we did drink excellent wine.
The wait was definitely worth it, as we sat in a booth, and my friend suggested the spinach pizza and a salad, with above-mentioned wines. The salad was good, but the pizza was just delicious. The ambience added to the evening. Our waitress, while clearly busy, was polite, well-informed and helpful. We took our time and I vowed (vowed, mind you!) to return, as did General MacArthur.
Twice more, on visits from Japan, I have made beelines to Tommaso's, each time with a Japanese girlfriend. She enjoyed it so much, particularly because on the first occasion, the owner's wife (I am not sure if she is a co-owner) came over to our table and actually spent a few minutes chatting with us. She is a lovely person, and made the occasion much more memorable for both of us.
We did breakdown and order dessert, which was also delicious.
I read other reviews about someone's having terrible service, which was surprising. I have had only good to excellent service. The food and the wine are just excellent.
My hat is off to Tommaso's. By the way, we did ask, and were told, who exactly Tommaso is!
- Pros: The food, the wine, the food!
- Cons: The wait, but be warned about this before going
Best New York Style Pizza in San Francisco
by rikfriday
This is one of the few restaurants in San Francisco that uses a real woodfire oven. The first and best pizza in New York was baked in a coal fired oven, which burns at about a thousand degrees. A woodfired oven burns at about 800 degrees. The coal and wood add not onlyl flavor, but the quick cooking makes the crust crisp and the insdie dough soft and chewy.
The thin, crisp style pizza at this restaurant is most like the New York style coal fired oven baked pizza in texture and flavor. Coal fired overns are not allowed in California, and new Coal fired ovens are not allowed in New York. Only the original pizza places that began with coal fired ovens many years ago are allowed to continue using the same ovens today.
The other simple salads and antipasto at this restaurant are similar in style to the foods you find in Rome in most neighborhood restaurants. I think this is the best pizza in San Francisco, and I have tried all the best pizza places in the city several times.
It's a family style old-fashioned restaurant and you are lucky if you get one of the wooden white booths to relax, sit back and enjoy some house wine, salad and crispy pizza. My favorite pizza on the menu is the is the house special with sausage, mushroom and pepperoni.
- Pros: Best Wood-fired Oven Pizza in SF, great salads and fun private wooden booths
- Cons: It's on a street with a lot of strip clubs, so maybe not a kid friendly area.
Nonexistent customer service, seedy location
by green101
Tommasso's is the worst customer service experience we have had not only in the US but anywhere in the world! The location is horrible and the staff is beyond rude. Do not ever go here if you value even minimal service! There are many other good Italian restaurants in North Beach so avoid this one at any cost
- Pros: NONE
- Cons: Service was truly horrible, waits extremely long and not worth it at all
THE BEST ITALIAN FOOD IN SAN FRANCISCO!!!
by countavila
I have been coming to this Restaurant since it opened. They have perfected the art of pizza making. Try the #13 Calzone or the Seafood Pizza for a slice of Heaven. And the Coo-Coo clams are to die for. And give yourself a treat when they put Cioppino on the monthly special menu. This is the first place I bring my out of town guests to for the San Francisco experience and they go back home bragging about the food.
And you can not experience a nicer welcome from the staff at all times.
- Pros: Service,food
- Cons: Waiting for a table
Go with the Pizza
by chocolorac
I just have one word for my review -- pizza! I went with a big group and we ordered two pizzas, among with other pasta dishes and salads. But the best was the spinach pizza. That's one of the best pizza I've had. Unfortunately, as it was on a Friday night and as we were a large(?) group of 8, we had to wait over an hour.
- Pros: Pizza
- Cons: Wait time, Not good for large groups
family atmosphere and the best spinach pizza in town
by jhh1981
I have eaten here a few times, and I am never let down. Their pizza in not greasy and very full of flavor. This is not the greasy late night pizza you'll be craving after a few cocktails on a Friday night. This is a place to sit and relax with friends over good food and a nice bottle of wine.
Good Pizza, but not great
by gres0022
I made a special trip to San Fran from San Jose to try the pizza at Tommaso?s. I had a half pepperoni and sausage and half oregano, garlic, and basil pizza. The pizza was good and served hot and fresh, and the price was fine. The restaurant was busy, and I had just a few minute wait to be seated. After I was seated the service was courteous and timely. The neighborhood the restaurant is in is extremely sketchy with the adult shop next door and strip clubs/peep shows in the surrounding area, complete with guys yelling at you to come check out their clubs. The pizza was good, not great, and I?d rather not frequent this part of town again.
