Best Deal In Chinatown

by chronozeus

Having so many Chinese restaurants in Chinatown with most being very similar to each other (Cantonese styled cuisine) Hing Lung is the best one in my opinion. They have a huge selection of over 100 dishes all priced at $5 each, and I've probably tried a good 60 or 70 of those, and most are pretty good. They even have the Peking duck for $10, although quantity can be limited sometimes. They always have different deals for drinks and rice meals. Place is a little dirty, but compared to all the other Chinese restaurants in CT, it tastes better and is cheaper with better varieties.

  • Pros: price, selection, taste
  • Cons: atmosphere, dirty

Avoid at all times

by guanube

Based on various reviews, we visited Hing Lung on a Tuesday evening. It was busy, but not crowded, and not particularly clean. Food bordered on the inedible. If you cannot use chopsticks because of a disability, bring your own fork because they are not readily available. Although prices are inexpensive, be aware prices are higher on the menu given to caucasians. Not a good experience, not a mediocre experience, but definitely a poor experience.

  • Pros: None
  • Cons: Food was inedible.

Diners head here for the authentic Chinatown atmosphere, low prices and all-day dining hours.

by Lorraine Sanders

In Short
Perhaps best known for its congee (rice porridge) selection and tasty Chinese fried donuts, this casual eatery serves heaping portions on the cheap. But for the myriad posters announcing afternoon and evening specials on everything from Peking duck to Chinese herb Jello, the dining room décor is plain and decidedly o-frills. Patrons scour large plastic menus for offerings like BBQ pork wonton noodle soup, Szechuan chicken wings and fresh vegetables in oyster sauce.

Everything a true Chinatown experience should be!

by mealmkr

We used to live in this city and this is one we missed. We went for the happy hour 3-6pm. The conjee and fried donuts were the best we've ever had. We also ordered the potstickers and shrimp dumpling egg noodle soup and they were fantastic as well. The bill came to $9.50 for everything. An incredable Chinatown find at an unbelievable price. They also have the same special for a midnight snack from 10-1am. A definate not to miss.

  • Pros: Great food, great price, fast service

Excellent Rice Porridge, Noodles, Fried Doughnuts

by sonpham

I often consider rice porridge (congee) as the chicken noodle soup of East Asia. As a child it's the one dish my mother would be guaranteed to make when we were under the weather. For Hing Lung's porridge, I'd GLADLY have a cold if that's what it takes to get a bowl of this excellent soup. We've been coming here off and on for over 15 years. Not much has changed, including the great food. Our favorites are the porridge and fried doughnuts (baked fresh at the restaurant), but the noodles and rice baked in a clay pot are also very good. Usually very easy to get a table during the week, but expect a short wait on Saturday and Sunday mornings and early afternoon.

  • Pros: Food, Price
  • Cons: Parking

Good Food and Service at Great Price!

by rborushek

If you are looking for an inxepensive Chinese Restaurant with good food and service, then try Hing Lung. The food is as good or better as any of the top restaurants in Chinatown. Mostly Hong Kong style, but other regional dishes as well. Try one of the many chicken, seafood or claypot dishes. You are seated promptly. The wait staff is responsive and helpful. The food comes out hot-which means good! The restaurant decor needs updating-a new paint job and remodel bathrooms would help make it more appealing to families. Could use a better drink selection. No dessert offered-fortune or almond cookie would be nice. Free tea. Good for singles, couples or groups. Visa/MC

  • Pros: Inexpensive, Good Food, Good Service
  • Cons: , More drink selection, Dessert/Fortune?

Chinese Soul Food

by doralee

I think this is the best congee in the City. Their congee with pork and thousand year old egg is the best and their fried donuts are excellent. They have specials in the afternoon where everything is at a set price. Best deal around, albiet no atmosphere. Great for a stop in and grab a bite.

The Congee sucked

by mv6198

The congee had no taste and consisted pretty much of water, rice and some meat. For $4 you can do better in Chinatown. The chinese doughnuts were pretty good and cheap. Given the myriad of choices of restaurants in Chinatown, I would not revisit this restaurant.

  • Pros: Inexpensive
  • Cons: Difficult Parking
