Loud Music Spoils Conversation

by sstephens at Citysearch

While the food was fine, the atmosphere left much to be desired. Not 15 minutes after being seated, a very loud blues band started playing. Normally I enjoy dinner music, but I was eating dinner with friends who I wanted to speak with. The waiter even had difficulty delivering our dishes to the right people, because nobody could hear him. By the time dinner was over, I was hoarse from shouting out short sentences, and the dinner conversation was totally spoiled. What is a good meal if one cannot enjoy a conversation with it?

Good Italian restaurant on Columbus

by glunardi at Citysearch

Choosing an Italian restaurant in the North Beach area is probably more challenging than picking a Chinese restaurant in Chinatown. The concierge at the Marriott recommended this place. It's a nice location, the decor is inviting and they have limited seating outside.

We ordered Gnocchi and Fusili. It was quite good. The pizza was alright but certainly not the best. I would probably recommend the pasta.

Price-wise, it is definitely very attractive. While we were not a big party, it would seem like the place can accommodate large parties easily.

BEWARE of waiter named CLIFF--he will steal your money!!!

by lsyee at Citysearch

Despite the fact that the food and drink were pretty good at this restaurant, I would not recommend dining here because of a member of the wait staff...his name is CLIFF. I dined there with a group of my friends, one who actually knew Cliff. He was nice enough throughout the dinner, and when it came time for dessert, we weren't going to have any, but Cliff offered a couple of desserts "on the house." So we had dessert and waited for our bill...the bill comes and to our surprise, Cliff charged us for the desserts he said were on the house! In addition to that, I checked my credit card statement 2 days later only to realize that Cliff had charged $10 extra on my card! I wrote nothing in the tip spot, because as a group, we paid with a couple of different cards; I had already included my tip in the total I asked him to charge. So, I went in to speak with the manager and he showed me my receipt--and someone (CLIFF) wrote in a $10.00 tip in the spot I had intentionally left blank! I pointed out to the manager that the writing in the tip line did not match my writing (in the total line) and they agreed to refund me. But for me, it's not about the $10 refund--I would gladly give up the refund to have CLIFF FIRED!!!

  • Pros: good food
  • Cons: CLIFF the waiter who steals your money by adding tip to your credit card receipt!!!

nice lunch

by audreyjl at Citysearch

We stopped here during a day of wandering around north beach. We had a variety of things, salads, pasta's fish. Everything was pretty good but nothing really impressive. Nice cute place and good service. Much quicker than the place next door so if you are on a schedule I'd advise to come to figaro's instead of calzones. The food is a little less greasy too with a nicer variety. I would return.

  • Pros: service, location, meals
  • Cons: nothing too great

Amazing gnocchi, cute place, bad drink

by sharopooks at Citysearch

Went here on a recent trip to town. Very cute and cozy place. Great location. My drink was awful (appletini) but my mushroom gnocchi was awesome! Everyone else's food was fabulous too. Would go back for the pasta but would get wine or soda instead of a mixed drink.

  • Pros: Food (gnocchi), Ambiance, Location
  • Cons: Bad mixed drink

bad service

by caite at Citysearch

Had lunch there this past sunday. They have a guy who is very aggressive in trying to recruit passers-by into dining with them. That's how we ended up eating there. We waited for what felt like an eternity for our server to come to take order. The guy who recruited us to sit down saw that we were just sitting there looking expectant, but he didn't care if we were served so long as he did his job to trap people into eating there. There was a table next to us who managed to get their orders fulfilled and bread basket with drinks, even though they were seated 5 minutes after us. After what felt like almost 20 minutes, I told my husband that if someone didn't come in 10 minutes, we were leaving. Let me note at this point that they were not crowded at all that sunday afternoon. The waitress walked over right then, and was about to speak to us, until she saw a friend leaving and decided to go over and chat with her. After she was done chatting, she finally took our order. Five minutes later, she came back to ask us to repeat our order because she apparently forgot. After that, the food came at a reasonable time and everything was okay. I had their spinach and ricotta ravioli. It tasted good but made me feel sick later. Their mojito was disgusting. I would not recommend this place to anyone. Given the fierce competition between restaurants in North Beach, I'm shocked this place managed to stay afloat.

  • Pros: plenty of seating to choose from since everyone else is eating next door at Calzone's
  • Cons: slow service, bad drinks, wobbly table

ADORABLE WAITER AND YUMMY FOOD

by bellaitaliana88 at Citysearch

Gian Luca, daytime manager, is absolutely the cutest waiter ever! He is funny and attentive. Everything is done to perfection with him! We usually have him seat us every Columbus day! The food is resonably priced and tasts excellent! The salads are refreshing and taste wonderful. I love the Bruschetta. Their dessert selection is absolutly the best. The little chocolate pyramid and other deserts are soooooooooo tasty!

  • Pros: Wonderful and extremely friendly staff and great food!
  • Cons: NONE!!!! It's too good!

Good wine, bad food

by sfgal14 at Citysearch

I recently moved to North Beach and have been trying all the Italian restaurants I can. Recently, I went to Figaro and it was not a good experience. We were seated promptly, but were not given any menus. It took 10 minutes for the host to realize he'd forgotten to give them to us. The outdoor patio was nice and I liked the atmosphere. When our waitress finally came over, she was plesant and recommended a great bottle of wine. We ordered an appetizer and dinner. The buchetta was ok, but for $6, you only get 3 pieces... most places give you 5 or 6 pieces. It took a long time for us to get our food, our waitress even came over and asked if we had eaten yet... not a good question! I orderded the veal picatta, when i got it, all I could taste was lemons. The veal was dry and the sauce was way too sweet, not good. My boyfriend got pasta, it was mediocre, nothing to rave about and very small portions. I was very disappointed b/c this looked like such a cute place next to all the big, flashy places on Columbus. I don't think I'd go back.

  • Pros: outdoor seating, wine
  • Cons: food, service
