good beer, fun local names
by smoothbill
check out the authentic ceiling fan from the original saloon.
I go once and a while and enjoy it. A must-try if you are into micro-brews.
- Pros: good beer
- Cons: pub food can be greasy, expensive (but this is SF after all)
Beer Tasting and Drunk Locals
by saira1123
What could be better? This local brewery is a great find. This North Beach spot is a comfort spot for many old and young timers. If you plan ahead you can get a tour of the brewery and a cheap tasting. The staff is very helpful and will steer you in the direction that suits you best. This is a great mellow birthday spot or weekend hangout. It is very easy to spend hours here. It's also close to many bars within walking distance.
- Pros: Beer tasting, staff
- Cons: crowded
Must see San Francisco beer icon!
by John3B
Required beer geek stop, highly recommended tourist stop for a "non tourist" experience. What a pub should be - burgers and fries are perfect with the above average brews, the period interior just makes you feel good sitting there, and the staff are friendly and relaxed. You feel that this ought to be your local bar back home. We're from Texas, we always stop in more than once when we're visiting.
- Pros: Great beer, burgers, friendly service
- Cons: Not located in my home town
A historical North Beach hangout serving beer made on-site.

In Short
As the grandfather of the city's brewpubs (it was San Francisco's first), this watering hole garners serious respect from beer lovers who have been bellying up to its mahogany bar since 1907. The bar has changed names and owners throughout the years, but the original stained-glass windows, beveled glass mirrors and wood paneling have been meticulously restored. The spittoon and rotating fan--a twirl of brass and palm fronds--add backcountry elements to the speakeasy vibe.
Great Food, Great Beer
by jwoodbury
The SF Brewing Co. is a great place to go after work for their $1 beer happy hour special. The bartenders are generally quite amiable and the wood theme makes it very cosy. There's also a new cook who has transformed the food. Who would have thought a pub burger could taste gourmet? Before, the food sucked, but for the past few months it's rocked my tastebuds!
- Pros: Good food, Cheap Beer
- Cons: Beer is English-temp
One of the best brewpubs in the nation
by jeremyreed_citysearch
Any visit to San Francisco should include a stop at this brewpub. With Paddy behind the bar, fish and chips on the menu and fresh IPA on tap, the table is set for the perfect day (that will quickly turn into a night).
- Pros: great brews, take-out beer options
SATURDAY HAPPY HOUR!
by fitz94566
Great Beer and great happy hour prices, even on Saturday. Afternoons until 6 pm. Great sidewalk scene. Drink your beer and watch the "show"
- Pros: Inexpensive, Good People Watching
Great happy-hour prices
by peterbehle_citysearch
This is one of the oldest brewpubs around -- and the beer is still terrific. Bar competition is tough, with Vesuvio's right up the street. But SF Brewing never gets too crowded -- and the prices are right (especially during their $1 happy hour). Grab a seat by the window and watch busy Columbus Street traffic go by.
- Pros: Great beer
- Cons: Sparse crowds
