Were we there on a bad day? Could not recommend to my worst enemy.

by bayareapilot

My wife and I have driven past this little cafe in the West Portal neighborhood any number of times and always said 'we really should try that place out'.

Yesterday, after reading some positive newspaper reviews from years gone by, we decided to take a booth and try the place out.

Before I go into the BIG negative which is the food, I DO want to say that the waitstaff was very good in terms of service. It wasn't overly busy and we were attended to, promptly.

The food:

I ordered a chicken teriaki sandwich with some fries and my wife ordered scrambled eggs and french

toast. When the meal arrived, one of the first things my wife and I noticed was how the french toast had been sloppily slathered in egg and fried (rather than looking like a piece of bread that had been dipped in some egg, she had two slabs resembling a rough rectangular parallelegram). My chicken breast was still pink inside and my wife's eggs (both the scrambled AND that which was on the french toast) was not fully cooked.

So, I turned my attention to the fries. After all, who could mess up french fries. This place succeeded in ruining french fries. The fries tasted like they had been fried in oil that had been used to fry a variety of foods over a LONG period of time.

My wife couldn't finish her meal, nor could I. We paid our bill (and only tipped well because there was no problem with the waitress,,, jsut the food) and went over to the Rite Aid store to get some digestive upset aids (not exaggerating here). Clearly our bodes were taking exception to our undercooked food.

We eat out often and avoid the fancy restaurants and look for the 'home-spun' gems that are in this wonderful city and elsewhere. This food experience has to rate up in the top three of the worst food/restaurant experiences we have ever had.

best breakfast in SF

by robdubious

This is the best place for breakfast in SF. It's a hidden gem known to most West Portal residents but make the trip if you are a fan of a good old fashion diner style breakfast. I've grown so tired of pretentious sausage made from all things good for you served as silly, tasteless patties that I nearly cried into my Ray's Special (which btw is a must try) when they served up old school breakfast sausage. The portions are hearty, the menu is extenisive and there are vegetarian items as well. The service is friendly and fantastic and they will remember you the next time you walk in. You'll notice over half the crowd is regular, but newcomers are made to feel right at home. I have no idea why people still go to Squat and Gobble down the street, the food and service at Manor is far superior. Unfortunately Manor isn't open on Sundays. If it were it'd be my regular Saturday and Sunday morning ritual.

  • Pros: old school breakfast sausage, fantastic service

Home Cooking with a Smile

by beagle_mom

This old fashioned coffee shop offers food that is simple and tastes like it was made at home. Great hamburgers, fries, omelettes. Nightly specials include corned beef & cabbage, meatloaf. Also great home made pies and fountain items. It can get crowded because of many "regulars" who eat there almost on a daily basis. Service is fast and friendly.
