It is what it is, a truly neighborhood hardware store with as much of a selection as the floor plan can handle. While most of the staff are knowledgeable and enormously helpful, they do hire students - a good thing, considering the difficulty SF locations have paying our local wage scale to kids who don't know much yet - and they can at times be trying. The selection ranges far beyond every day needs. Being a hardware rather than building supply store, they offer kitchen bowls as well as naval jelly, lag bolts, garden hoses, pots of parsley and paint. Being a neighborhood hardware store they will not have lumber for a large construction project, but the occasional board, strip of molding or sheet of plywood or dry wall is not a problem. Although finding extremely arcane supplies is iffy, their range is surprising extensive. Good place to take your posers and problems. I have found answers and solutions at Pappenhausen that I did not get at Home Depot. They also carry a lot of hard to find cleaning supplies. If they don't have it and you have time, they will offer to get it. While it may take a moment to find Parking over the weekend, it is readily available on the weekdays, and there is usually easy parking within a block of the store. Since this store is in West Portal, it's an easy shot for anyone on the KLM line, and the neighboring restaurants and coffee shops make a quick trip from Market more pleasant. Pete's is right next door.

Pros: Service. Broad if not profound selection. Nifty place. West Portal.

Bad attitude and poor customer service, especially from the horrid little teenage cashier. One would be better off going to one of the many Ace Hardware locations in the area.
