Healthy salads
by sfgoodgurl
I love the salads here... you can make your own, they are very fresh ingredients, and VERY reasonably priced. If you get a main salad with meat and add extra meat, it is easily a great, healthy meal for two for $10!! Though very noisy, the turn-around is quick so you are apt to find a place to sit. The one thing I can't stand is the language barrier from the order takers, they can never understand that I want all the salads MIXED together (romaine, spring, and spinach)... it's very simple to do, but they never get it. They always want to give me the spring mix.
- Pros: cheap, healthy, quick
- Cons: language barrier with salad makers
salads!
by f8d
Best place for salads since all made to order and can get everything one wants ? even topped with meat! Narcissists go crazy! Everything is fresh.
The sandwiches are hearty & filling. Beware of the onion rings & fried potatoes, which prove addicting.
Bummer the frequent dining card disappeared.
- Pros: salads
- Cons: closes @ 10pm
The best salads ever!
by sonyacrowley
I'm not generally a fan of this sort of establishment- it's small, the lines are long, it's in a busy part of the Sunset- but Pluto's salads are amazing. Completely worth trecking to that side of the city, even! You choose 7 additions and dressing, they toss it all together, you pay for it. They have sandwiches too, but they don't look very interesting. I like their sides, but they can be salty.
- Pros: Scads of choices for salads.
- Cons: hard to find a place to sit (yourself or your car).
Good Value...Inconsistent Service & Portions
by hungrysf
No doubt the value at Pluto's is present. However, the degree of value and service sways on each and every visit. The cooks and cashier RARELY smile and often seem upset. On top of that portion size is extremely inconsistent. One night you get a HUGE salad, loaded with ingredients. The next night you get half that amount...all depending on the cook you get and whether or not they like you. I'd advise them to train their staff to smile and set up a consistent portion size. In any case the concept is a good one and your dollar still goes a long way.
- Pros: Overall Value, Freshness
- Cons: INCONSISTENT Service & Portions, DAMN Slow Water Dispenser, No Smiles :(

Poor service and inconsistent amounts
by dyj48
Just came back from Plutos and was taken aback at the inconsistencies in terms of salads. I ordered a Main salad and when it was done, it was about the same as a side amount. I aksed if that was really a main and then compared it to other salads that were sides and it was very slightly more. I looked over the side and saw another customer with a main salad and it was twice the amount of mine, but my server insisted what I had was a main. He was not inclinded to add any more and I left. I won't be back ever again. Don't recommend it, poor service and very inconsistent in terms of what you get.
Good food: quality, price and quantity

Went ot 3 Plutos and each time I had a great lunch. This is a good place for a nice uncomplicated lunch/diner when you want something good, healthy but not too expensive
- Pros: Quality, Price, Style
Healthy food goes for reasonable prices at this funky, low-key favorite.

In Short
No waiters or white linens here--Pluto's is cafeteria-style. This, combined with the uncomplicated food, creates a relaxed atmosphere. Patrons can sit at outdoor tables under colorful space oddities, or inside, looking out from huge glass windows. The down-to-earth staff will custom-make salads from a wide-ranging list of ingredients, so diners can be as healthy as they want to be. Heartier dishes include herb-roasted Sonoma turkey, with smashed spuds, Neptune Stuffing and cranberries.
Cheap, Fast, Fresh, and Tasty

Visited 8/19/04. The wait was very short, but a bit confused about how one gets "servied": just walk up with your blank ticket to the station of interest (Salad, Sandwiches, or Sides), tell the order, and they punch it for you. I had the grilled flank steak sandwich, which was a good size and very tasty. The garlic fries were piled high, but aside from being seasoned curley frieds with mounds of diced garlic piled on, it was nothing special. My friend had a salad, which was huge, and she liked it very much. I think for Pluto's, keep it simple and stick with salads and sandwiches.
- Pros: Cheap Fresh Food, Fast Service, Easy to Get to (N)
- Cons: , Glorified Cafeteria
Down to Earth food from Pluto
by howudoinsf
Popped in for a quick bite tonight... You grab a meal ticket and order your food, the card gets punched out and totalled at the register. Had the Sonoma turkey/gravy, Galaxy veggies, onion rings and a root beer for $10. Everything was decent, veggies were a bit spicy as was the bbq sauce for the rings. Decor is casual college, with some wood tables, stools and a tv for dining entertainment. I liked the place but maybe expected too much. Either way, it's a good deal for the $$$
- Pros: Inexpensive
