Closed. Out of Business. Gone. All furniture and tables still in place. Locked up.. Very mysterious. 6 21 08

It is history...

Sudden and without explanation.... ALL GONE! A call to the phone number gets a sad recording about the death of the mother of John Drocco, the owner. (but no particular date is given, but it just occurred, after the place closed.

It's good for what it is. What it is ain't great N'Awlins food.

by moge

Several years ago I came here for a friend's birthday. At some point we ended up having a food fight. In the middle of that, the waitress asked us if we wanted more to drink.

That's what makes PJ's good. Just went back tonight for an anniversary dinner. The salad was nice. The cold seafood extravanganza (I think that's what they called it) was fine. Most of it was pretty good - fresh seafood served cold and unadorned. The jambalaya had almost no flavor. I've made jambalaya - it ain't hard to do. No excuse for that.

But the waitress was great - super friendly in a genuine way. You could tell she still didn't really care about what she was doing - not like she was trying to impress us. The atmosphere is fun. Had a really good time. Go for that.

  • Pros: Good fun
  • Cons: Some food is good, the cajun is bland.

Mediocre service, below average food

by icee429

I went here for the dine about town special where they have a prefix menu with the lobster. When we asked about the special menu, the waitress said they don?t have it on hard copy so she had to write it down for us. The waitress didn?t have a pen on her so she went to go get one (took about 5 mins). When she came back she wrote down the entrees. We ordered the lobster cioppino and the lobster tail. Halfway through our salad, we did not get our drinks. When we asked for our drinks again, the waitress forgot what we ordered. When she brought our drinks back she told us that they didn?t have lobster available, so we ordered off the regular menu. We ordered the 1 pound bbq shrimp and the seafood platter. The first thing I noticed was that both platters were over cooked. When seafood gets overcooked, it gets very rubbery. Also, we couldn?t tell the difference between the seafood platter and the shrimp platter, both had the same exact taste. On top of that the sides, rice and corn, tasted like the frozen bags of food you would buy at the supermarket. For a restaurant that specializes in seafood, I would think that the food would not be this bad.

  • Pros: Great Ambiance
  • Cons: Seafood, Service

Best Seafood-Cajun Food anywhere

by cfiuren

Have been a long-customer. From the time you walk in till the time you leave you are treated special by the friendly staff and wait people. Starting with appetizers, the cream of the crop are PJ's famous crab cakes, Alligator eggs, fried calamari and many more; On "Bayou By the Bay NIghts" Cajun food is served along with lobster, crab and crawfish. It is wonderful. One of my favorite dishes on any night is trout cahoule. It is an open piece of trout served on a black skillet, smothered with shrimp and onions. It is to die for. For starters their clam chowder is one of the best I have tasted. When my brother recently had Caeser salad he was impressed when he was asked if he wanted it cut. He said it was the best Caeser he had. My brother is not a fish eater and loves their baby lamb chips, or the smoked ribs. For dessert there are many good ones to choose from. My favorite is the bread pudding. I have to make sure I save room. I highly recommend PJ's because no matter if you love seafood or don't you will be able to find a dish you will love. God on Wednedsay or Thursday nights and guest chef Michael Reese will give you jello shots and mardi gras beads. If your lucky he will give you one of his stuffed peppers as a starter. I can't wait till I go again.

  • Pros: friendly greeter, wait staff etc., great food and drink
  • Cons: parking can be difficult.

Bright Beads and Blah Food

by mandyc214

When I attended Tulane University in New Orleans, my tastebuds longed for cuisine that didn't have any sort of cajun or creole flair! Cajun japanese, creole salads, new orleans brunch- it all tasted the same... but today that dilemna fuels a bitter distaste for mediocre "new orleans cuisine" disguised poorly by cheap liquor and Bourbon Street bobbles. Because most food in New Orleans is similar, only the strong survive. But PJ's has proven, yet again, that most people outside of NOLA have no idea what good cajun food tastes like- and assume New Orleans is about jello shots and bland seafood dipped in flavored mayo! I want to like PJ's because they are nice, but they certainly don't deserve such a high rating. It's sad there aren't more options for Cajun in SF; I find myself at PJ's occasionally and normally leave asking why I wound up there again.

  • Pros: Nice Owners and Staff, One of Few Cajun in SF
  • Cons: Too bland and one dimensional, like standard NO tourist food on Bourbon st

Deliciously spicy!

by citykid18

I've been to PJ's about 3 times in the past year. If you love spicy food, this is the place to be! I've ordered the crabcakes, the gumbo, the lobster, the oysters, and the jambalaya. All were very good. I've always made reservations through OpenTable and haven't had any issues with being seated whatsoever. One time, the cook came out and gave us all very strong jello shots. I can't say anymore, but I've always had a good time at this restaurant!

  • Pros: delicious food, great ambiance

Terrible service

by ilovesffood

We went on two occasions, and on both the service was frankly offensive. On the first they sat us at the bar and then forgot about us, nobody would take responsibility until we almost had to tackle them, and then when our food was ready we waited 10 mins for someone to help, until we actually just asked the bartender to grab it from the kitchen.

The second time we showed up at 9:15, one couple was waiting before us, and they were seated, after which the hostess/waitress returned and said they were closing and would not seat us. We asked about the advertised closing time, and they said because it was slow they were closing early, YET THEY SEATED SOMEONE JUST BEFORE US. Avoid this place at all costs.

  • Cons: Terrible service and attitude.

The Cajun cuisine comes complete with Mardi Gras atmosphere at this popular Inner Sunset spot.

by Contributor

In Short
Large crowds and raucous music are the norm here. The small dining room and bar are packed regularly with a local crowd, who come for the spicy food and festive atmosphere. The menu features Cajun-Creole cuisine, with starters like crab cakes and Cajun popcorn shrimp with fried okra. Entrees include jambalaya, blackened catfish, all-you-can-eat crawfish, mild-yet-flavorful trout "Catahoula" and petrale sole fried in crispy batter.
