This place is a great dive. It's a small cafe, but the potatoes are really good. Everything is reasonablly priced and pretty good. I got the avocado and cheese scramble and it was good. I have been served by the same women every time I've been there and she's great. The atmosphere needs a little freshening but whatever, at least the food is good.
Pros: Breakfast

I have always loved Howard's and it's been there forever. It's a smallish local independent business offfering humble "American" food without a lot of glitz and glamor. Comfort food like meatloaf with mashed potatoes, soup and salad/sandwich, and even their specials make recall a simplier life. Their front window sometimes gets steamed up on rainy cold days/evenings (which to me is always a sign that I want to be inside of that place, not standing outside). It is often crowded, especially at peak meal times. Prices are pretty good for this type of fare. Parking is probably a problem but I always just walk there so I wouldn't know. I hope Howard's never closes and never changes the way it does food.
Pros: Old fashion comfort food in an old fashion no-frill cafe
Cons: Waiting line at peak meal times, not open at 11pm when I get hungry

Howard's has been a mainstay in the neighborhood for over 40 years. I think that when the original owner was still around, the food was much better but they still serve up a decent breakfast. The coffee is so so but I saw several people with their own coffee from the coffee house across the street as the other poster suggested. Breakfast is typical eggs with homefrys and toast, pancakes and french toast is also available. I had an omlette and coffee and the bill came to $9 w/ coffee. The service was fast and friendly.
Pros: cheap

There are some amazing brunch places in SF, but sometimes, you just want a basic breakfast, and this is a great place for it. The coffee is typical diner-esque brown water, but friendly waitresses don't mind if you bring in the good stuff from the Roastery or Starbucks across the street. Eggs are fluffy, potatoes are crispy and the price is right.
Pros: good basics, friendly service
