Great food, Great prices

Everyone says to try the dry fried chicken, but that was not my favorite. Cherry Pork is the dish to try. It has cherry and ginger and the texture is perfect. We tried it on a lark and were pleasantly surprised. The dumplings and potstickers were excellent. We had peanut noodles as well which were delicious.

The prices are unbelievable, $8-$10 for a lot of dishes. They have lots of group seating with big tables and lazy susans. The place is PACKED, so be ready for a wait. We waited about 20 minutes on a Sunday night. Also, the clientele is almost entirely Chinese, which I always take as a good sign that the food is authentic.

• Pros: Delicious, inexpensive, Fast
• Cons: They try to rush you out a little bit, but only because there's always someone waiting to get in behind you

Delicious!

the black bean noodles are DELICIOUS, as were the chicken wings. long wait, but it was worth it. everything i tried at the restaurant has been great so far. can not wait to go back.

Great Value

8/29/07 Ordered pork potstickers (Qty 6 fried), $5.50, sizzling rice soup (2nd largest), $6.95, fried shrimp (Qty 12 tempura batter), $7.50, mongolian beef, $8, black bean shrimp, $11, and steamed rice, $2. The potsickers were very large and browned completely. Not the best I've had, but the most unique. The soup was tasty enough, but I was expecting some larger pieces of shrimp. The fried shrimp was a special find, excellently cooked. The beef was tender. It is served dry over noodles. The white onions were under grilled. I would have liked a sauce with it, but the portion size made up for it. Plus you can always request some extra sauce from the kitchen. The shrimp portion was not as large and had too few green peppers. Everything was served just cooked and hot. Get here between 5pm and 6pm for dinner to avoid waiting and finding a parking spot. I would go back and try some other dishes since the value is there and the food is freshly cooked. This is not gourmet fare; it is good basic chinese. Wait staff are not very attentive so you must be assertive with any waiter that passes by if you need anything. Lastly, the steamed rice is refilled for free.

great food great price

I felt I had to write a positive review to conteract some of the damage from the bitpump review. I go to San Tung several times a month and while there is usally a wait and some days the food is a little better than others, it is consistently good, cheap, and definitely above average. I am at a loss as to how a "not recommended" was applied to this restaurant. I like the hot and sour soup (jazz it up with a little vinegar or add some of the kimchi if you think it's bland - and, bitpump, it's supposed to be sour, hence the name :-), the black bean noodles, the green beans, the dry fried chicken (order it diced if wings aren't your thing, though this will emphasize the sweetness for those who don't like sweet), and the twice cooked pork, among others. While not for those who need frills and stellar service (turnover here is always impressive) and definitely NOT touristy, I always bring out-of-towners and friends here because it's easy, informal, and the food is always good!

• Pros: great food, great price, always good, good for large groups
• Cons: usually a wait (call ahead and reserve a spot if you're pressed for time)

Unique dishes

Their signature spicy chicken wings are fantastic. My favorite noodle is the seafood black bean noodles as well as the peanut butter noodles. Their dumplings are great too. There's always a wait, but that just comes with the territory of having great food. It may not have the best service or decor, but then again, we're not paying $75/head. I have always taken my friends who are visiting SF to this restaurant and EVERYONE has always enjoyed it.

Horrible horrible review...

This is a horrible, horrible review. I think you're a moron. San Tung is one of the better Chinese restaurants in town. However, going there at 11:00 AM is hardly the best way to that out. I will say that it is not for the decor, nor the engaging servers that SF locals and outsiders alike flock to this place, but for the food, the fantastic variety and consistent quality of their dishes, and the more than reasonable prices. Take it from somebody who has been enjoying and returning and further enjoying this great place. Give it a go, the wait can be less than pleasant, but the food will never disappoint.

The Scene
Faux orchids and faded red Tsingtao paper lanterns minimally decorate this brightly lit dining room. Consistently buzzing with local noodle addicts, the cacophonous space makes conversation nearly impossible. Servers are efficient and no-nonsense, much like their surroundings.

The Food
Since the encyclopedic menu can be daunting, in-the-know diners stick to the ever-popular hand-pulled noodles, dumplings and "dry-fried" dishes. Pleasingly pliant handmade noodles easily withstand their bold, assertive sauces. Arriving in heaping bowls, these dense, slick strands are beautifully paired with bites of varied seafood swimming in a fiery sauce or a slippery, robust black bean sauce studded with beef and seafood.

Incredibly Bad food, IT IS NOT Chinese Food IMHO, more like Korean imitation Chinese food

Despite my disagrement with other reviewers' opinions I do not call them names. Every restaurant has it's bad days or good days dependin on the occasion. I am just statiing the actual experience I have had at this place. I believe another reviewer also stated similiar views in regards to the odor that this restaurant does have. I believe the other reviewer stated that the restaurant smelled liked an unwashed mop. If you like the food there, that's fine by me. You may disagree with me, however I truly believe this place serves horrible food. If you like it please feel free to frequent it as much as you like. For people who call other reviewers names just demonstrate what kind of person you are. I am disappointed that CITYSEARCH would allow this type of review to be posted where name calling is permitted. That's all. :-)

This place has incredibly bad Chinese food. I am totally amazed that people seem to flock to this restaurant. As soon as I enter the restaurant I smelled a very strong odor of "urine". The place already has 5 tables of diners (at 11:10am) and no one seems to noticed! I figured there must be something with my olfactory sense so I sat down anyway. I ordered the hot and sour soup, five spice beef noodles and the chicken wings. The soup was sour and had very little flavor. The noodle was ok except it had tons of shredded ginger inside, the noodle was barely edible. The chicken wings were horrible. It is basically fried chicken wings with some sweet and sour sauce and more sugar (the kind you spoon into coffee)sprinkled on top. I had 1 piece and couldn't eat anymore. I just got back home and was sick from eating at this place. The service at this restaurant is also the worst. My server was exceeding rude, and I am used to rude waiters but this guy beats them all. Basically, he didn't even want to talk to you. Horrible horrible place. I am amazed how bad this place is.

the portions are big and so are the tables. its always packed, which is good and bad news. you know that the food must be good but then you have to wait for a table.
