Preserves and pickled vegetables greet customers as they enter, but the deli cases running the length of the building are the focal point of this market. Housemade salamis and sausages, smoked fish and dozens of premade salads, such as marinated eggplant, roasted pepper and mushroom fill the cases, while the tops are stacked with cooked foods and samples of the market's wares.

Outstanding Deli!

I just found this deli, while looking for the old Odessa Russian Deli, which no longer exists. It is an incredible place for people interested in old-world foods: dozens of types of dried, cooked, cured, and smoked meats; pickled, salted, and smoked fish (smoked salmon $10/lb); house-made, pickled and prepared vegetables and condiments; rye, pumpernickle, european sweets and cookies; etc., etc. etc. Plus, the owner is very hospitable, will offer you a taste of anything, and is nicely proud of his wonderful store. A treasure out in the avenues.

• Cons: pushy Russian ladies
