Great ambience, not impressed w/the food
by kattc
I hadn't been to Khan Toke for a couple/few years - I loved it then so we decided to try it again. It missed the mark for me. I still enjoy the ambience but the food was lacking - they must have been having a bad night. Service was slow and it was so dark in the restaurant our whole party had a hard time seeing the menu (we sat at the back of the restaurant). We asked the table next to us (who had teenagers) and they said the same thing so it wasn't just our "30/40 year old" eyesite. I may give it another try but with so many excellent Thai restaurants to choose from..... I would love to hear some more recent reviews - anyone?
- Pros: Ambience
- Cons: Food, lighting, parking
Little Thailand in Richmond, San Francisco
by dracylla
I must say, asides from the gorgeous decor, the food is most delictable! The only thing that's missing? Pad see yew. Other than that, the BBQ chicken is most delicious. Very traditional styled eating, polite waitors, and great service!
They still take your shoes away
by donunder
This was my first Thai restaurant when I came to America.
My friends there asked me what my favorite food was, at the
time I was completely enamoured with Thai. They were
giggling about this place and the old guy who checked your
shoes at the entrance. The old guy was not there but they
still take your shoes. Everything else was deja vu. A pleasant
trip back with no disappointments
- Pros: Shoe Check, Uncommon dishes, Reliable
Must go

Simply the best Thai food in the city, period. The menu also has unique dishes not typically found at other Tahi restaurants.
- Pros: Ambiance, Unique menu
A little Thailand in my neighborhood
by lanielle
The experience of Khan Toke is almost like a getaway to Thailand.
The decor and ambiance is amazingly detailed. The food is close
to authentic Thai and the service is awesome! It's definitely one of my
favorite local neighborhood restaurants!

In Short
Waitresses in elaborate Thai costumes dance in the center of a shoeless crowd, sunken into lavishly carved teak dining tables. A garden out back offers a pleasant outdoor eating experience with the smell of fresh herbs wafting through the air. Appetizers include a green papaya salad with fresh chilies, or squid salad for more adventurous diners. Entrees like pad thai or red and green curries are complemented with a selection of Thai beer.
Authentic Thai Food and Fun

Khan Toke's food is consistantly good. When ordering spicy- this restaurants represents true spice but also does it correctly by complimenting the food and not over powering the palate. The seafood on the menu is hands down the best to order. They constantly change the seafood based on the seasons. I strong recommend making the trip out to the avenues.
- Pros: Seafoodq, Ambiance, Friendly service
Lucky Visitor

I would have never found this place were it not for my friend, who used to live in San Francisco, taking us here.
The atmoshpere is great, the service amazing and the food is really good. I'm going to Thailand in December, and then I'll be more qualified to judge its authenticity. However, we had lots of seafood (my wife doesn't eat meat), and it was pretty darned good.
- Pros: excellent decor, nice atmosphere, yummy food
- Cons: remote
Not Bad, All Things Considered
by jade3
True, the main draw of Khan Toke is the atmosphere -- removing your shoes, sitting on pillows, and eating at low tables. The food itself is okay to good, depending on what you order. However, when compared to all of the other hole-in-the-wall Thai restaurants in SF with higher prices, absolutely no atmosphere, and comparable (or so-so) food, I still prefer going to Khan Toke. I had a Thai boyfriend for 9 years, and have eaten at wonderful Thai restaurants in L.A., Chicago, and Honolulu, but am still searching for one in SF that is better than okay.
- Pros: Somewhat intimate, Inexpensive
- Cons: Hard to find parking, Uneven service
