pricy, right?

by SalC

We ordered crispy whole fried fish that costed $20.  Wow, pricy, right?

Also ordered crispy fried skinny noodles with vegetables, white rice (and we received a very stingy portion), sizzling rice vegetarian soup (big mistake, seafood version is loads better), and egg custard tarts.  They gave 3 tarts per order, but by goodness were they tiny!  3 tarts combined is still less and smaller than 1 normal sized tart.

Our bill was disproportionally larger than expected from a Chinese restaurant.  We could have eaten Japanese with top of the line sushi at those rates.  An hour later, we were hungry again.

Last night's dinner was a stand-out. Miraculously!

by pianorenee

I've eaten here several times, but last night's dinner was a stand-out. Miraculously!

We ordered Sizzling Rice Soup, deep fried taro and potsticker dim sum, a fried noodle dish with veggies and roast pork, white rice, and a mushroom with okra dish.

All were very good! A very good thing too is that a lot of the food was quite al dente, especially the vegetables, so you don't get the feeling the stuff has been sitting around for a while.

Terrible!

by winterangel

I have never written a review before but my family had the worst experience here with the owner that I have to say something about this place. We didn't even dine in, but ordered take out. Since we made a large order, we wanted to check and make sure everything we ordered was included and nothing was missing. The owner (or I'm assuming he was) wouldn't even let us check our order. He rudely told us everything is there, and if something was missing he will cover the cost. Since we couldn't check our order, we took the food and left. When we got home, we realized in fact they did forget one of our orders. We called back to let him know, and he accused us of being dishonest and hung up on us. What AWFUL ATTITUDE, SERVICE, AND BLATANT DISRESPECT TOWARDS CUSTOMERS! And the food was just OK. We will never give this restaurant our business again!

Some of Best Chinese Food Around.

by yanakins

Superb food, great atmosphere. I grew up in the city and I have to say, this is some of the best chinese food I've had in a while. I'm not sure if they use msg, but the stuff tastes amazing and doesn't have any hint of that excessive greasiness you find at other places. The mongolian beef was tender, juicy - cooked just right. My personal favorite, however, was the shrimp with glazed walnuts. Hot and sour soup was just that, HOT and sour. My one suggestion would be to dine in - I ordered from them recently and some of the soup had spilled out onto the rest of the food :(

Great Dim Sum, but pricey

by fishjj

Well I tried Ton Kiang and thought it was great. Just like any restuarant, there are things that are left to be desired and things that were spot on. First, my party and I went about three o'clock on a saturday. Turns out it was a great time to go. We had to park a couple streets west of ton kiang but it wasnt bad. When we sat down we were bombarded with dim sum. It was good and bad. Good because we got a lot of differant dim sum quickly, bad, because we felt like it was kind of crammed down our throats. Pork buns, mushroom and shrimp dumpling, pork dumplings, roast duck, scallop and shrimp dumplings were out of this world. Everything else was good. I can say that everything we ate seemed to be very fresh and tasty. Some of the wait staff was very kind and some made you feel as if you bugging them, however I think you will find this at most dim sum restuarants that have a lot of turn around. It cost us about $85.00 dollars, which was a little expensive. On the flip side everything was good with some things outstanding. Good luck, and good eating.

  • Pros: Roasted Duck and mushroom and shrimp dumplings
  • Cons: Parking

We made a mistake. We went to Golden River first and loved it. Might be if we didn't, Ton Kiang would do OK in our opinion, but there is no way to like it after you tried next door Golden River restaurant, where mostly chineese people enjoy absolutly wonderful quality authentic dim sum cuisine. The only better thing you'll find in Ton Kiang is an ambiance. If it matters more then food, then this is the place for you. Otherwise go to Golden River and enjoy great food (your choice from the photomenu instead of carts or trays they offer in places like Ton Kiang) and attentive service. BTW, the prices are much better in Golden River and the value you get for these prices too.

  • Pros: ambiance
  • Cons: all of the rest

Yummy!!!!

by akl22

I love having dim sum everytime I visit SF. It is so good and you never wait long for the next delictiable dish. I never wanted before but when I leave there is always a whole load of people waiting outside. The only thing is that it gets quite expensive if you don't watch out. But I always make this part of my trip.

  • Pros: Great Food, Fast Service
  • Cons: Can be pricey
