Joys in the Attic

by wendolyne

A favorite browsing spot on the way to Comic Experience, Other Shop II is like your clean and neat Uncle Buck's basement. His stash of old Playboy mags would be filed by centerfold hair color; his rabbit foot keychain collection sorted by size and color and displayed proudly on a cleverly designed hook-and-eye pegboard.

During a recent visit I fell in love with locally designed handmade pillows and whimsical stuffed animals made of patterned vintage fabrics and scored a ring I suspect was made by a designer I've always admired. Once for a friend's funky wedding I found a terrific vintage dress in a great print with swell buttons and a soft sateen finish for only $30--an incredible bargain. I am *always* surprised by the nice low price tags...I'm usually a good guesser and I'm always high when it comes to guessing here!

My most special purchase was a set of black faceted lucky pearls...only $45 and I got the job without resorting to a boring standard creme strand! It's become my most favourite necklace--both professional and unique. Whomever does the jewelry cases up front in this store truly has a good eye for the unique and fabulous.

Indulge in a leisurely stroll: this fine neighborhood shop offers a lively walk down Memory Lane with enough variety to suit even the most curmudgeonly and reluctant shopping partner.

  • Pros: great selection, variety of sellers, nice and friendly staff, good prices
  • Cons: not enough time to see every little thing!

This purveyor of groovy, space-age home furnishings and other vintage goods is an ironic decorator's dream.

The Scene
Chances are, if you're a fan of retro, camp or kitsch, you've already spent some time in this wacky offshoot of the original Other Shop. While the first location feels a bit like a garage sale, the "other" Other Shop is more like a museum of the goofiest, flash-in-the-pan schools of design from the '50s to the mid-'70s. Thanks to the magic of irony, the chairs, sofas and home furnishings that went from stylish to stupid years ago are once again suitable for home use.

The Goods
You'll find big-eyed-child paintings by Keane, Memphis sofas and love seats (primary and secondary colors only, please), vintage cocktail accessories, spherical chrome lamps and just about anything else needed to set up an Austin Powers-style pad. Prices range from ridiculously low to ridiculously high.

Cool goods

I live in the neighborhood, and although I've only ever made one purchase here (an old alarm cloick for way too much money) I love to browse the inside and cruise the window. Staff is very friendly!

Um, this place is so over priced it's ridiculous. I highly recommend passing it up-- that is, unless outrageous prices (like $90 for a tiny electric clock) on thrift store items amuse you. Then by all means, have a good laugh.
