Are you kidding?

by kathrynis27

I don't know which NYC these people are from, but when comparing this pizza to the pizza from the NYC I'm from, it stinks. Bland; no taste. They wouldn't last 2 days on the east coast. However, it's not horrible for California.

Cheap, delicious, and open late

by urbn

I'm sure I didn't eat enough pizza when I lived in New York. Now that I'm a block away from this joint, the mood arises for pizza ...way too often. It mostly has to do with the very not-New-York flavors in the pesto, potato, and garlic pizza. I can barely imagine a 2am without that flat sliced friend.

  • Pros: Creative flavor combinations
  • Cons: A little extra greasy

Love the pizza

by hounder

Any place I can get broccoli on my pizza is going to have my attention!! But their stuff is always fresh and yummy. I use them mostly for delivery and they are pretty good about getting the pizza to me within an hour and it's still hot or at least very warm.

This is Pizza for Californians and Tourists

by couldnt

If you are actually thinking this is going to be New York pizza you're wrong. This is Californians with no passion making thin crust pizza. It's alright I guess, I have had it before will have it again. Not out of wanting a legit slice. There aren't any in California, get used to it. New York pizza is a whole different story, this place should do their homework because I think they're one of the few who could probably actually be that good if they did.

  • Pros: At leat the idea of this place is hopeful to a city with bad pizza. It looks like New York in there at least.
  • Cons: It's not as good as it should be. It's like giving someone hamburger when you advetized steak.

This tiny, no-frills pizzeria churns out thin-crust, New York-style pies.

In Short
The restaurant specializes in take-out and delivery, and has very little seating. Veering somewhat from its namesake genre, the take-out spot is best known for its "You Say Potato" pie, made with sauteed potatoes, roasted garlic, and pesto. Other specialty pizzas run the gamut from the "Big Meat Combo" to the "Veggie Lit," featuring part-skim mozzarella.

Good pizza, but not the best, and expensive.

by znmci

They had interesting types of pizza that were good. I would recommend trying the pesto or pesto and potato pizza, it was pretty good. I was surprised at the prices though, I think a slice was almost $4. I don't know if it's worth that much.

  • Pros: good pizza, quick, different types
  • Cons: expensive

pretty good pizza

by raytchul

this wasnt the best ive had in the city, but definately not the worst. i had a slice of pesto with potato on top, and a LOT of whole garlic cloves, most of which i took off. it was good, but didnt have that much flavor. the crust was good though. id go back again, which should say something.

The best pie around

by vaca

I could eat their pizza every day and still love it. Fresh ingredients, great texture, consistently tasty.

Pizza Heaven.

by corbinwright

A trip to Haight Street isn't complete without a slice of Escape from New York Pizza. Their pie is second only to a certain Chicago style pizza joint, and that's on the other side of the bay. There isn't much seating, so just grab your slice and walk down Haight street making everybody else want pizza. Don't forget to pick-up a free drink coupon from Amoeba Records. The potato-pesto is some of the best pizza that I've ever had, but those without a love for pesto will be satisfied as well.

  • Pros: Speedy, Cheap, Location
  • Cons: Lousy Parking, Small

Escape from this Pizza

by firbulig

Its ok NY Pizza, not the actual stuff, but it USED to be much better. It has definitely gone down in quality over the years. Its real heyday was back in the 80's. The recipes are good (Pesto Pizza, mmmm) but it seems the food preparation has become below par. Mgmt needs to take positive control. I've gotten a luke-warm slice far too many times lately.

Denverite flips for pizza!!!

by jilly

"Escape From New York" has, undoubtedly some of the VERY BEST pizza I have ever had the pleasure of eating!! It also boasts an eclectic collection of autographed celeb photos, which just happens to include one of my fave group, the Monkees, signed by Micky Dolenz!!! Groovy, baby!! I found all of San Francisco to be utterly enchanting and "Escape From New York" was definitely a highlight!! It is an absolute MUST for any out-of-towner eager to experience a true Haight-Ashury district eatery!!!
