Well, not enough variety for me. I am allergic to bell peppers, and it turns out EVERYTHING had bell peppers with the exception of lamb, which I don't eat, and a variety of cold salads. I had cold salads for dinner and wasn't impressed. My dining mates enjoyed their dishes, though.

I first visited La Med in Berkeley, CA about 4 years ago. I went with 2 girlfriends and ordered 2 entrees and an appetizer. That was plenty of food for the 3 of us. However, the food was so spectacular that we decided to order another entree and 2 desserts. Since then, I've visited the SF location on many occasions. It remains to be my first dining choice for all occasions and have impressed many dates with my fine taste in food. My favorite entree is the Chicken Pomegranate. I have never been a fan of chicken but this dish never fails to amaze me.

La Med continues to be my favorite restaurant in the Bay (the second being Tropix in Oakland). The food is exquisite, the prices are reasonable, and the staff is both friendly and attractive.

It feels a bit tight when you first enter, especially when it's crowded, but it is a quaint tightness and not one of tension. The tiled tables and wall decor add a brilliant warmth to the room, while the inviting scent of espresso comforts the air.

If I had to recommend anything, it would be the combination meals. It's such a shame to limit yourself to just one of their delectable treats. Come with a friend and try their Meza Platter for Two.

Did I mention the staff is attractive? I think I did...

It is the most authentic as close to grandma's. The hummos is so delcious and the dolmas are great. My fave dish is the leventine meat tarts in phyllo dough. I also love to have it with the lemon and rice soup. I like the prices and they have great wine and beverage selection. It's small and cozy place in the pacific heights area.

  • Pros: food, ambience, menu, wine list, speciality wines
  • Cons: Parking

The Scene
Like the other branches of this local mini-chain, this popular location has a small, cozy and sometimes cramped dining room. It's often crowded, but the wait for a table is short due to efficient service. On sunny days, grab one of the sidewalk tables and take advantage of the warm weather for a more authentic Mediterranean experience.

The Food

A skillful blend of Mediterranean cuisines, the menu here relies heavily on the flavors of Greece and North Africa. Favorites include savory levant sandwiches, traditional Greek phyllo pie and chicken with cinnamon, almonds and chickpeas wrapped in phyllo. A bargain is the Mediterranean meze, an assortment of 10 house specialties including lamb kebabs, dolmas, lemon-scented hummus and tabbouleh. The honey-drenched baklava or datil amandra (warm phyllo filled with dates and nuts) are can't-miss desserts.

It is no surprise this place has been around forever. It is small, intimate and consistently good food. Excellent value. Inadvertantly I met the owner and he is super friendly. I will always tell people to come here.

  • Pros: great food, great value

I have started going to La Mediterranee back in college, in their Berkeley location. I just love this place. The Middle Eastern Plate is my favorite, with the pomegranate chicken. The food is great and the service is always good. The Fillmore location is small and comfortable, not the least bit pretentious. Try the desert with dates (can't recall the name), it is so good.

  • Pros: Great Food, Great Value, Nice cozy atmosphere
  • Cons: Not good for groups.

This is one of my all-time favorite restaurants in San Francisco. I almost wish that it wasn't as great as it is, so I can begin to explore other restaurants in the area, as well. This is the original store with another one on Noe St. in San Francisco and another one in Berkeley. The original store is the best of them, because they serve MINT TEA (served hot or cold) with free refills. I liken the experience to British High Tea, because I love ordering the VEGETARIAN MIDDLE EASTERN PLATE, even though I'm not vegetarian. The variety of tasty little morsels is unbeatable. The service is also the best at this original location. The people there have always been sweet and personable. It's hard to find good service nowadays, so look no further...this restaurant's got it.

  • Pros: Friendly, good servers. Delicious dishes that leave you feeling pleasantly full at very reasonable price.
  • Cons: There is none.

A heard of this restaurant through word of mouth. The food and spices are amazing. It is also reasonably priced for both the quality and amount of food you get. I feel as though I am eating more fresh and healthy than I do at most other places. The servers are busy, but I think they do a great job. The manager last time even treated our table to baclava. I would avoid this place (during busy times) if you don't like feeling cramped. It might be the most itty bitty restaurant I have been to, but it is worth it!

This place has been around for a long time, their service and staff's pleasant attitude along with generous portions of great food make this a fantastic place. We often meet friends there and our out of town guests are always impressed. Must try their special lamb dish, also go with house red wine, it is a bargain for a very yummy wine!

  • Pros: price, quality of food, house wine
  • Cons: small bathroom through kitchen, hard to have a party of more than 6
