I was a regular for 15 years...not any more
by vincentsf
I was cut off by the manager and the apparently dumb-as-nails waiter....before I even had one drink in the bar, or anywhere else. I had just got off work, met my partner at the bar, and ordered a drink. It never came, and when I inquired about it, was told I was cut off. How does one explain that??? The manager certainly did a piss-poor job or trying to explain himself. Appalling service....I have never been treated like that anywhere. They just wanted to turn the table, but wouldn't even admit to that.
No thanks...not anymore.
PS the food is terrible. But it has always been terrible, so no real revelation here.
- Pros: Was a nice place for a drink....
- Cons: not any more...
BAD WAITER SERVICE
by RANDALLCRAIG
I recently dined at Harvey's, which I have in the past, but this past time I did not have a good time. The menu offers plenty to eat, but when my friend ask our server about the Fish and Chips, he highly recommended them, saying "the tartar sauce is home made here, I like the Fish and Chips" ,my friend deceided to order them, but when they had arrived, he did not like them. The waiter had asked how they were, in response he was told they were to mushy, and the batter tasted too over done, at that point he told him he did not like them. Our waiter only said I am sorry, and did not even offer if he wanted anything else, or suggest that he would take it off the bill. PERHAPS THE WAITERS should be a little older , and experienced in these types of situations.

great place for weekend brunch
by kosteral
Stopped in a couple of Sunday mornings ago and had a wonderful, leisurely brunch. Great music (but not too loud), casual atmosphere. The "Harvey's Sliders" (tiny burgers with curry sauce) are to die for! Service was great (they were moderately busy) and entertaining, bartender was very good and mixing strong Bloody Marys. Overall highly recommended during the day.
The cafe formerly known as the "Gay Hard Rock Cafe"

Let's face it, Harvey's food will never be listed in the Michelin guide, and although I personally have never experienced bad service, there are obviously people who have. But I like this place and know a lot of other people who do too. The specialty drinks are a bit pricy ($9), but if you just want a cold beer and a good burger, big salad or a plate of wings, you won't be disappointed. The real reason to come here is the location at 18th/Castro, quite possibly the gayest intersection in the gayest neighborhood in the gayest city in the world. You can't pick a better spot to bring gay tourists on their first visit to our city. Park yourself at one of the window seats and watch the parade of gay humanity go by. I've also seen a couple of killer drag shows here too.

Stumbled upon Harvey's on Halloween and saw the coolest drag/horror show EVER. MCs Cookie Dough and Peaches Christ rocked the place. Hats off to Harvey's for housing a fierce show in the Castro. I have been a fan a Harvey's and the Monster Show ever since.
- Pros: monster show, cool vibe, fab clientel
You never know with this place.

Usually poor spacy serivce from the waiters and poorly mixed drinks from the bartenders who are probably to busy admiring themselves to care about a cocktail. To be fair, there are exceptiosn and occasionaly service is very good on all accounts, but you never know. Food is edible, stick with burgers or fried stuff. On a recent trip we actually found a new comedy night there (well, new to us). Skeptical at first, we sat down, got some drinks and a shot special they had for the show and were highly amused. It was pretty funny. Didn't know they did more than stale drag and equally stale trivia. I heard there is a new manager and hopefully he can continue this upswing and take it in a new direction.
- Pros: decent bar food
- Cons: staff
Oh, puh-LEEZE!

I don't know why the neo-nelly naysayers below are so down on the service...I find it very handsome. It helps to be attractive to get what you want at Harvey's. Great burgers; juicy meat on full buns. Frozen drinks gave me brainfreeze for life. Do it.
A good-time monument to cruising and queer lib that serves solid grub to boot.

The Scene
This a casual, friendly dining-and-drinking environment that reflects the best of the Castro--a mixed crowd of young and old that enjoys the bar's convenient location and bustling atmosphere. A tasty brunch and dinner menu make Harvey's more than just another cruising spot; brunches draw in locals and tourists during the afternoon hours, while evenings give way to a clubbier atmosphere.
The Draw
The location makes it an ideal place to "cocktail" after work or meet friends before heading off to dance. Cruising and harmless eyeballing are common pastimes, with windows on all sides giving full view of crowds on the inside, as well as traffic on the street. The low lighting and candlelit tables cast a flattering glow on everyone, and the background house music sends a current through the place.
TERRIBLE SERVICE
by noshedidnt
Seriously.. what's up with this place? I've been here a number of times (from a busy friday night to daytime lunch) and no matter who the waiter is, the service is always TERRIBLE. The waiters all walk around with their head up their you-know-what . Last night, was no exception. From the minute he threw our menus down without any sort of "hello" to having asked for water 5 times before it arrived (with our check). We wanted another round of drinks, but he never bothered coming around so we went somewhere else. It's just the type of service I've gotten use to here. And why? Unfortunately, due to their prime location, I reluctantly find myself there when a group of us are meeting before going out on the town. We all leave saying the same thing, "I forgot how much this place sucks." Well, let this be a reminder.
- Pros: location, full bar, menu selection
- Cons: , attitude
