Simply Amazing

by ooh_la_la

After viewing a few blogs at first on citysearch, after a strong recommendation from a dear friend of mine who works in the restaurant industry, I was afraid to try Globe. Wow I am so glad I had gone with my friend?s recommendation. My husband and I tried Globe on Saturday evening. Where do I start, we came in with open hearts and empty belly?s. We are both very picky about our food. After being seated my husband and I noticed all the yummy food and dishes around the room. We couldn?t help but notice the globe signature dish the ?Steak for two.? The entree came as a meal for two people which included a side potato dish and caramelized onions along with tons of perfectly cook steak! As we both also noticed the house made Mac and Cheese we also added this side on to our meal. Can you say WOW?!?! The meal was unbelievable. Not only was the food outstanding but the wine list was incredible! Our service was outstanding and honestly the dinner was completely flawless! I HIGHLY recommend Globe to anyone interested in a evening of wining and dinning with a significant love one or maybe even for a power business dinner.

Terrible service ruined a good night

by fatjon

I joined just to write about an absolutely terrible experience here....

The restaurant was half empty but it still took an hour for the food to show up. I mentioned to our waiter that dinner hadn't gone so well. His excuse was that someone had tried to run out on the bill and that he had to chase him down. While that's terrible, I'm just not sure how that adds 40 minutes of prep time to my dinner...

1 star for decent food and only 1 star for terrible customer service.

Globe, thank you for ruining my evening. I will be steering clear of you and Mr. Manzare's other creations from now on.

  • Pros: Food
  • Cons: Terrible waiter, lame excuses, lack of respect for the customer

What happened to this place?

by robyn74

I took a client to lunch without a reservation and the host gave us the most appalled look and told us to come back in 45 minutes. I think it was the bartender or a waiter who offered to squeeze us in which was extremely nice, but I'm not sure it was worth it. I believe my companion left hungry and I would have offered him some of my food-but I ate all of the tiny portion. We had to flag someone down to refill our water and I couldn't help but feel that since we had not ordered cocktails or appetizers, we were a low priority.

  • Pros: Tasty food
  • Cons: Small portions, rude lazy servers

Don't go for lunch!

by rsimeone

I have been to Globe many times over the years and always thought it was very good, so when a client asked me to take them there for lunch, I happily made reservations. What a mistake.

We sat down at 12:15 and quickly gave our order to our waiter. It took a long time to get water and bread, but we were chatting and didn't really notice. At 12:50, 40 minutes after we sat down we still had not gotten any food! I spoke to our waiter and told him to skip the appetizers, that we now really only had time for the main courses as we had to get back at our office in 35 min for meetings etc.

Five minutes later he brought us our appetizers and told us that we didn't have to pay for them, they were his treat. Ten minutes later (we had now been in the restaurant for 55 minutes) I stood up to again speak to our waiter (who was avoiding us). Instead I spoke to the bartender who told me that they guys in the kitchen were "going as fast as they could". He then sent our waiter over to the table who told us that it was going to be another 10 min for our food. I told him that we would not have time enough to eat and that he would have to box our food to go. At that point our waiter told us to "just forget it you can leave and I won't charge you". For what? At that point we had only had two iced teas and the complementary salads.

I told him that we had been waiting an hour and five minutes for our food and that we did not have time to go somewhere else and start again. I again asked him to box up the food when it was ready. At 1:25 one person left to get to her meeting. At 1:30, an hour and fifteen minutes, after placing our order our waiter brought the boxed meals - and this is hard to belive - a check.

And, when I ate the lukewarm meal at my desk later it was extremely salty. You have been warned.

It used to be one of my favorite place but not anymore

by juvi999

They raised prices, it got too noisy and the best Mac and Cheese in Bay Area became barely average (they changed the type cheese and macaroni). I also guess now they got more popular, and thus, they are trying to squeeze everyone in by basically making sit on each other laps. The food can be great sometimes, so we might be back for dinner one day, if we are feeling on spending too much money but definitely not for lunch.

The first and last experience during lunch was horrible. The server named George wasn't able to suggest or recommend any of the dishes besides saying twice "they all are good". That's no brainer! He also was way too arrogant to be a sever. I myself served, managed two restaurants and now I eat out almost on daily basis, so I am not hard to please and I tip well. But don't act like you are doing me a favor by doing your job! I have seen enough people in this industry who show so much attitude and then blame everyone but themselves for receiving bad tip or being stiffed . What else do you expect with such an attitude? I am just surprised that such a nice restaurant like Globe does such a poor job in hiring. But I guess it makes sense after reading other reviews here that no one wants to work for such an owner of a restaurant, who expects his/her employees to work almost free. Maybe that's why they are having such a hard time of keeping good people? Also I barely ever see any management on the floor.

At the end, no matter what kind of owner one works for, he can give a good service in a slow restaurant. What kind of question is whether we have a reservation, when a place is empty and no one came in 45 minutes later? If you have no reservations in the book, why would you ask such a dumb question? I wish I didn't even leave a 12% tip because he didn't deserve 5 dollars.

Oh and food? An average ahi tuna salad, pasta, a bottle of sparking water and a server with attitude issues were definitely not worth of 50 dollars.

  • Pros: Good support staff (i.e. bussers), great certain dishes, interior design
  • Cons: Service needs to be worked on, too loud, too crowded

Great food - skip dessert

by nicoa

Great wine list-- some good finds at a reasonable price. My boyfriend and I thought the service was fine-- our server was attentive, but definitely gave us our space, which was nice. The food was phenomenal. We started out with the soup of the day, which was a cauliflower puree topped with lobster. I ordered the roasted chicken and my boyfriend, the swordfish-- both of which were excellent. We also had a side of macaroni and cheese (I had to order it, per the reviews) and it was delicious. Made the mistake of ordering the flourless chocolate cake for dessert. Don't really know how they managed to screw that up-- it was dry and almost flaky. I still highly recommend, just don't bother saving room for dessert.

Goodfood late and good food early

by blunasi

Globe, i havee been going there for years, it is as good today as it was ten years ago, if not better. I love to have the globe classics The Mesquite Grill Bone In New York Steak, the Mac and Cheese, the homemade spaghetti with tomato and basil, and all the great things that Chef Jason makes on the Farmers Market dinner on Sundays.

Nice place

by tall1sobay

Got lucky and went on a Sunday. Had the "Farm Menu", a 4 course meal based on what the chef could find at the farmers' market that day. Very good overall with very fresh ingredients presented in an interesting way. Particularly good was the stinging nettle spaghetti and the duck. The pluot tart was OK but a little too tart for my liking. The pastry was a puff-type pastry which I didn't expect. My wife and kids tried the apple tart which was much better.

Like a lot of S.F. restaurants, this isn't the best place to take kids but they did their best to accommodate us and we felt welcome. The service was good but I did detect a bit of attitude from our waitress but nothing offensive. It's S.F. - I don't think I really need to say anything about parking.
