Secret Gem: Bernal Heights Local Hangout

by freshy

I live across town and at least 2x month make my way over to suburb-in-the-city eclectic Bernal and the welcoming bar on Cortland, Wild Side West. I am not a lesbian, yet they make me and my husband always feel welcome. I am surprised another person rated this bar as unfriendly, because I find just the opposite (maybe the bartender was just busy, because there's usually only one and the place does get pretty crowded.) My advice is to go on a Wednesday or Thursday night when the place has more of a local vibe. Be prepared to be hungover because they make a stiff, and I mean stiff, drink! Amen!! (P.S. great place to pick up a game of pool).

confused about this place

by arpngup

Been there 3 times and i must say that the place looked too good to be true. The atmosphere was vivid, the location couldn't be better and 3 dollar beers is something you don't find around very much. I was even lucky enough to be served by a very nice and polite bartender who reminded me of a of a good italian friend from highschool. However, last time i was there (and actually the first one as well) a short blond bartender went out of her way to make us (i was with a couple of friends who live around the corner) feel unwelcome. i guess taking money from straight people is all good but showing some good manners to them is just out of the question.

Being part of the hospitality industry for the past 12 years, i can tell when some people just don't wanna deal with certain customers and despite our effort to show we were decent, good paying customers, we still got treated poorly, to say the least. don't get me wrong, the place, the people (most of them anyways) that go there are very nice and down to earth, but i think certain employees should show common sense and treat all paying customers with the respect they deserve.

  • Pros: great location, good prices, cool patrons, usually neighborhood people
  • Cons: bartenders

A hidden bar with an outdoor sculpture garden in Bernal Heights.

by Contributor

In Short
The interior of Wild Side West resembles an old-style saloon, with a wooden structure, mismatched collection of tables and chairs for card playing, and lots of silly knickknacks on the walls. There are a couple of pool tables and sports on the television sets, so they're not too strict with the theme. It also features more outdoor space than indoor--with lower- and upper-level patios and a shrubbery and sculpture garden.

Great atmosphere

This bar is not only for ladies but a lot of guys go here. Best prices I have seen lately. Very unusual suroundings. Interesting items on walls and throughout the bar. Got the oldest cash register I have seen in years. Regina, a new addition to the staff, is especially nice, fast. and cute too. Has large TV,s. Many beer taps. Outside areas popular.

Best Unexplored Lesbian Bar

by pimpmamakg

If you are tired of the overcrowded, attitude and drama filled, young dy ke scene at the Lexington Club, then Wild Side West may be the bar for you. This place has everything a young and older lesbian is looking for in a bar: 2 level outdoor patio, jukebox, pool table, video poker, pinball, Galaga, Ms. Pacman, cable TV's, bar and table seats, and friendly bar staff. The drinks are reasonably priced and come in regular sized glasses, not the small ones that the Lex has converted to. Parking is very easy to find on or around Cortland street, which also has some great restaurants, cafes, and places to shop. On the weekends, you will find lots of lesbian s with dogs, lesbian s with kids, and just plain lesbian s walking up and around Cortland. Wild Side West is a great neighborhood bar to drink and gather anytime of the week or weekend. Plus, lot's of water and plastic cups are available for those who would prefer an alcoholic alternative.

  • Pros: Parking, jukebox, outdoor patio
  • Cons: Not enough lesbian s

Wild Side West Review

by chribra

If you want a casual, warm and friendly place to hang out, this is the place. Spontaneous music and laughter, a neighborhood bar that welcomes everyone espcially Lesbians... Thurs and Friday good, weekends parties(birthday etc) The back patio-nice and eccentric with beautiful trees, flowers, murals and various seating arrangements, for privacy or not. Most of the gals(and guy's) have know each other decades-new friends easy to meet. Be open minded, and surprised.

  • Pros: funky atmosphere, lesbian, neighborbood, easy to meet folks
