new chef?

by apple415

I had dinner there for the Thanksgiving weekend. Food was not as good as before. The only reason I gave 3 stars was the waitress.

  • Pros: waitress
  • Cons: food (taste & presentation)

Great Establishment

by guntli_1

My aunt Cathie is the owner of this fine little resturant. She is a wonderful cook, and deserves creadit for all she does. I hope people enjoy this fine establishment. I have eaten there in 2000, and was highly impressed by the skill given to the meals.

The worst brunch in town!

by awd1978

I just visited Liberty Cafe last Sunday and found it to be awful enough to search out a site to write a review. I am a cook and a lover of food, especially breakfast food, and found the Liberty Cafe profoundly disappointing. There was a wait, which is to be expected on a Sunday morning, but we weren't even offered coffee for another 10 minutes after we were seated. The waitress, who was desperately trying to please and miserably failing, was flighty and seemed to serving the whole restaurant herself. She completely forgot my boyfriend's order and we had to practically get up out of our seats to get a refill of coffee. The worst was that I ordered eggs benedict, a brunch staple, and the eggs were nearly hard-boiled inside. After bringing this to her attention, she took the plate to kitchen, scaped off the eggs, and gave me back the same plate. A few minutes later, she brought me another egg in a cup. Worst of all, brunch for 5 with tip and without champagne, came to over $80. Acceptable for a good meal, but completely outrageous for an awful one. My advice, go to Savor on 24th Street, or even Welcome Home on Castro St.

A valuable culinary establishment off the beaten path

by hmct

Liberty Cafe is like that standby outfit you have in your closet that is great for all occasions and makes you feel like a million bucks every time you wear it.

My husband always goes for the potpie. Both the vegetarian and chicken options are incredibly well done and chock full of flavorful, fresh ingredients - served piping hot in a bowl you could swim in!

I enjoy looking through the menu to see what's new each month. From skirt steak to lamb to salmon -everything I have had has been beautifully executed and delicious. I clean my plate every time!

The staff is knowlegable about food and wine and they take great pride in providing diners with a memorable experience. Liberty Cafe is the kind of place you can take a friend to catch up on life or take out of town guests for a little treat in a part of San Francisco tourists rarely see (which is unfortunate because it's such a great neighborhood!)

Here's a tip for light eaters: Order one of their delicious salads and get the pizza of the month - you won't regret it!

Save room for dessert because there's always some kind of house made ice cream... my favorite was a mint chocolate chip a few months back (they used REAL mint!).

  • Pros: menu, service, fresh ingredients, excellent value
  • Cons: small restaurant so you may have to wait but it's worth it!

Sick and tired of the atitude

by tpcallah

I give up. Every time I have gone to Liberty Cafe in the past three years they have never been able to accomodate. Extremely rude and hostile when you enter and even when you leave. How a dump like this survives in this town amazes me. Try somewhere else!

Best Chicken Pot-Pie

by sfnative718

It's true, this really is the best Chicken PotPie ever along with other delicious items on the menu. There is usually a wait, but the wait is worth it. Excellent service. (apparently the word P0T is an inappropriate word according to Citysearch, too funny). I'm pretty sure "that" ingredient is not in this pie.

Excellent Service -Greg / Wonderful Comfort Food

by rewsf

I ate at Liberty Cafe finally after hearing great things about it for several years. We went there on a Friday -early evening. There were many children, and many parents not keeping after there children. However, our waiter suggested we go to the back bar and try some wine. It is a beautiful cottage w/ a nice selection of wines by the glass. Amy did an excellent job in suggesting and having us try some different wines. Greg, our waiter, came back and got us, and we were seated at our table. Let me start by saying Greg did an excellent job in taking care of us and other tables while he had to manouver around children laying on the ground - he was much more patient than I would be, and I can't understand how parents can allow their children to lie on the floor of any restaurant. Greg made some suggestions - the Chicken Potpie and the flank steak which were both outstanding. One of the best Potpies that I've ever had. The prior reviewer sounds like someone out for vengeance -writing like a scorned employee. Greg's wine service was excellent as was the wine list was really well done for such a small friendly place. We finished w/ some dessert wine and luscious desserts. The overall experience was excellent and we will definitely be back! I suggest everyone to go for a casual lovely meal.

  • Pros: food, service, atmosphere
  • Cons: parents not keeping watch of their children

Throw me up tonight

by mr_vonderdarling

If you're looking to run home jaws clenched shut to keep yourself from throwing up, then Liberty cafe is for you. The caesar salad was ok. The lemonade was just unsweetened lemon juice. and the potpie inspired small explosions in my stomach. the majority of the crust was uncooked and slimy. And the vegitables were sub par. When a waiter finally came over to check on us after twenty minutes and we told him about the uncooked crust he told us the ingridients of the potpie made it soggy but it was cooked. He lied. And then tried to sell us dessert. DONT GO TO THIS RESTRAUNT!!!!

  • Pros: eavesdropping on sixty-year olds conversations
  • Cons: you will have a conversation with your toilet after eating here

Great brunch

by secretagentwang

My girlfriend and I hit this place on our way to the airport on a Sunday morning. While we waited for about 30 minutes before we were seated, it was definitely worth it. We opted for ordering all of the sides instead of an entree, and we were very pleased with the decision. The breads were excellent (good selection of 4 very different though equally tasty breads). Applewood smoked bacon was very tasty, and I loved the sausage. Also, it's quite possible that they served me the finest glass of orange juice that I've ever had. I know it sounds weird, but trust me. Would definitely recommend.

  • Pros: Excellent food
  • Cons: Long wait

Cozy cafe

by bobbybell

What's not to like about a place that offers pot pie? Every dish I've had at Liberty is fantastic, and being able to wait in the wine bar or courtyard is vastly preferable to milling around outside, as you would at many restaurants. Learning from a waiter the meaning of "heirloom" tomato was a nice touch. I also enjoyed listening to Ella Fitzgerald while I dined.

  • Pros: cool neighborhood
  • Cons: tight seating
