The stained glass windows and traditional pews make a nice contrast to the modern messages spoken in the pulpit. This San Francisco pioneer church was founded in 1850 but it has kept looking forward, involving itself in spiritual and social justice issues of the current times. The predominately straight congregation welcomes people of all religious and ethnic backgrounds, and is in the forefront of public witnessing for equal rights for Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual/Transgendered people. The Society's 19th Senior Minister is the first openly gay man called to that position. Rev. Stewart, his partner of 25 years, and their five children illustrate the warmth and diversity of the community. Small Group Ministries, Social Justice activities, and Religious Education programs for both adults and children are popular ways for newcomers to meet other participants in smaller groups.
Pros: Welcoming, non-traditional spiritual message in an elegant traditional setting
Cons: It's a large urban church with lots of activity ... that can be intimidating when you first walk in
