This legendary but run-down Tenderloin dive is now a posh drinker's bar that pays subtle homage to its history.

Formerly a dive/shrine to owls, The Owl Tree's reopened as a swanky neighborhood/after-work bar. The interior got the hotel-lobby treatment--plush red carpet, dark wood paneling and a row of mini chandeliers--while the outside got a tile mosaic of an owl, in accordance with the late founder's wish that the bar remain "owl-themed." Cheap prices and dive swill are out, and ultra-premuim bottles (J. Cuervo de la Familia tequila, Bowmore 18 Scotch) and comtemporary cocktails (Dark and Stormy, Cucumber Gimlet) are in. A trophy case dedicated to the nocturnal glory of the previous The Owl Tree is interesting, and hooter fans will appreciate what's standing behind the bar, too: a mirror engraved with owls, again reflecting the bar's respect for its history.
Kooky but great place for a drink

I was in the City with some out of state friends and we stopped by here for a drink after an all day shopping and sightseeing and winetasting day. It was really a lot of fun. We were immediately greeted and given bowls of yummy snacks (Gardetto's) and a wet-nap for salty fingers and drink orders taken immediately. The drinks were very good and the bartenders were friendly. The owner, Bobby, was there and we chatted with him and he is quite funny. He wound up buying us a round of drinks. We weren't ready to leave but had an early morning and had hoped to go back the next night but we ran out of steam. I'd definitely go back to this bar for a few drinks and great atmosphere.
- Pros: Great ambiance, good strong drinks. fun patrons and employees, very laid back
- Cons: Very small, may be hard to get a seat. Prices are along the li
