Massive slices of roast beef and an old-fashioned atmosphere have made this historic restaurant a meat-lover's mecca.

WARNING: You Can't Take Home Your "Complimentary" Second Slice!
by hungrysf
Overall my dining experience was a good one, but there was one major flaw: YOU CAN'T TAKE HOME YOUR (Complimentary) SECOND SLICE! They never mentioned that to us, until we asked to have it boxed up. Bad move on their part and a great example of miscommunication, which could cost them repeat diners.

When you eat at HPR you don't have to think about much...just the cut of beef you want to eat. 3 cuts (House Cut, English Cut and the King Henry VIII Cut) earn you the right to have a second cut if you can finish the first...on the house. Cool, right? Not so fast!
- -
Being the frugal gourmet I am, I was determined to eat my first cut (House Cut), which had to be at least 16oz, so that I could take home another juicy slice, along with my mashed potatoes, spinach, Yorkshire pudding and bread, for leftovers.
- -
The server asked if I wanted another slice, I said yes and he took away my entire plate with all my sides still on it. He returned with another small slice of beef and a small side of mashed potatoes and spinach. I was happy because I was going to eat a bite and get the rest boxed up.
- -
I asked for a box and only then did he say, "You can't take home seconds, not even the sides." (But he took my original sides away...I wanted those to take home!) He also told another table that wanted to take home seconds, "We don't do that. Everyone would do that then."
- -
Here's the problem...they don't mention this on their menu. They do mention however, that if you'd like a second cut of beef, you can have it. If I would've known that, I would've enjoyed my meal a bit more and not force fed myself...maybe that's what I get right? In any case they should inform their customers up front, who are paying a pretty penny.

- Pros: Booth in the Beefeater Room, End Piece of Beef, Mashed Potatoes
- Cons: Seasoning Salt in Salad, Brown n Serve Bread, YOU CAN'T TAKE HOME SECONDS!
BEST PRIME RIB AND EXCELLENT SERVICE
by Stella Werley
I am from Texas and I can tell you that I know my beef. The House of Prime Rib serves the most tender and succulent prime rib that I have ever tasted! There are some restaurants that give you a small serving and charge you a fortune, but .the cost of the meal is reasonable in comarison to the large portions of meat and side dishes that you are served. The service is extremely friendly and efficient. Too bad that this is the only one in existence. Would love to have one in Texas. I heartily recommend this restaurant to everyone!
- Pros: Best Prime Rib and excellent service
All I can say is perfect !!!!!!

The Prim rib melted in my mouth. I heard about house of Prim rib from a friend so I decided to go with my family from out of town for a change. They had the best service and the food was mouth watering. My family said that they have never tasted prim rib like they did at the House Of Prim Rib... They told me every time they come back to see me they want to go to the HOUSE OF PRIM RIB....
TOURIST TRAP

If you would like an evening of screaming across your table to your dining companions, surrounded by LOTS OF loud single man: well this is your place!
To make the dining experience even better : you can count on barmaid Jennifer (her personality is sort of a 19th Century Schoolmistress at a Catholic Nun's school)
Plus you have the patronizing austrian manager,to help you.

I have been hearing about this restaurant ever since I moved to Sf a few years ago, and I finally just went for dinner. The Prime Rib is delicious and you get a number of sides with your meal that are just as good. Go hungry!
- Pros: Great sides
- Cons: Too much food

Old-school deliciousness!

This is one of our favorite restaurants in the city. Old-school charm, lush red leather banquettes, professional well-dressed waiters, a sweetheart of a maitre'd, and a great bar. The prime rib is succulent and done to a turn, just how you like it (they even offer yorkshire pudding, something you just can't find anymore)! Portions are large and the service is impeccable. We have our holiday dinner here with friends every year, and invariably everyone loves this place. It's expensive, but for special occasions you can't beat it.
Highly recommended.
- Pros: Delicious food; sumptuous atmosphere
- Cons: None--really

An oldy but a goody. Amazing Prime Rib.
by MrMoose111
This place hasn't changed since 1949. Dark style steak house like mood. Old red seats, fix ens that make you say, I remember eating that when I was a steak houses 20 years ago. The creamed spinach, yum. Lots of bacon flavor, the mash with the extras yum, wine selection is reasonable with the more expensive topping off around $110. The star of the show is the prime rib. Melt in your mouth goodness. Dinner for 4 was a bit over $300. A bit expensive but I guess for SFO not too bad. I'm impressed they don't serve french frys, even for kids.
Enjoy!
- Pros: Prime Rib in a classic environment
- Cons: Do the valet. Shady part of town at night.
