READ THIS ONE FOR THE KNOW~ BOYCOTT THIS PLACE
by localknowz
Obviously the PRIOR reviewer didn't read the PRIOR PRIOR reviewers paragraph. It wasn't about a bad dining experience, it was about NOT dining at an establishment that encourages the killing of sharks for their fins. Sharks are caught by the hundreds and literally all their fins are cut off immediately and they are thrown back alive into the water to die. To deter this inhumane treatment of sharks, boycotts on establishments that profit off this is what the reviewer was trying to say.
If you want a good blues club try Biscuit and Blues downtown.
- Pros: nada
- Cons: Shark fin soup, parking,
Do not eat there
by foodloveryum
This restuarant has shark fin soup on the menu. If you are planning on eating there, call and explain to the manager and the owner that you will not eat there until they stop offering shark fin soup. If you're unaware of this issue, please google "Stop Shark Fin".
Busy, busting place with great food and wine!
by shanghaieats
This previous diner obviously had a bad day...I have been there many many times and it is always good. Being Chinese, I know my food and i love wine so like anywhere, you need to know what to order. Ask the servers and they wil guide you to the signature dishes...The SF Chronicle named it one of the "Top 100 Restaurants" in the BayArea and gave it *** so how bad can it be. The live jazz is free and I even saw Stevie Wonder play there one night a few years back for free and he just jumped on the piano and played for almost two hours...mind blowing experience!
- Pros: Great overall experience
- Cons: parking is a pain
The food tasted like cheap chinese takeout and made me ill
by jjsf77
I wanted a good quick bite after meeting a friend at a bar nearby. As usual most of the good restaurants were packed and I just didn't want to deal with the hassle. This place was almost empty and that made me think twice. But then I thought, given the location, how bad can it be?
It became clear really fast why almost no one else wanted to be there. I ordered, got my food and it consisted of MSG laden takeout style food that tasted like it had been kept warm under one of those heat lamps you see at McDonalds. I was starving but couldn't force myself to finish.
I was so hungry and it was pricey enough that I forced myself to finish about half of what was served. What a mistake, this stuff turned to lead in my stomach and my gut still feels horrible three hours later as I write this review.
Don't ever go here, or if you do, don't eat anything.
- Pros: Decent live music
- Cons: The food is toxic -- seriously.
Expensive very ordinary chinese food.

Nice atmosphere and some music couldn't makeup for the blase food. We had to send the first three courses back. This needs improvement.
- Pros: atmosphere and music
- Cons: food and service
Great place, but beware of the service
by mluerra
The food and ambiance of this restaurant are fabulous, but unfortunately, the service is not. We finally got the waiter's attention, and ordered our dinner, which included a lobster dish. After about 25 minutes, he comes back (for the fist time since taking the order) and asks us what we ordered! We repeated the order, and he disappeared. The wine director came over, because it was so obvious that things weren't going well with the server. When we told him we ordered the lobster, he told us that they had been out of that for about an hour. The server never mentioned this, or was just plain clueless. After that, the wine director took care of us. He got our entrees out to us right away, and was very accomodating. He brought over a bottle of champagne on the house, and didn't even charge us for our dinner. Thanks to him, we were finally able to try the food, which is very good. Please hire some experienced waiters, because this is too nice a place to have bad service overshadow everything else.
- Pros: Food, Ambiance
- Cons: Service
Food awesome...service awful
by heyheyyu
Ambiance of restaurant was fabulous! They had a live jazz band when we were there. Service was a little slow. For such a nice restaurant, you would like service would be good....but I guess it's the same service with a typical Chinese restaurant
Best restaurant in San Francisco.

In the last few years, I have eaten at Shanghai 1930 a dozen times. I have never had a bad dish, let alone a bad meal. I have hosted large business parties, intimate client dinners, evenings out friends and even dinners with my wife and 3 boys. Shanghai 1930 met the needs of each type of dinner or lunch perfectly. The food is outstanding, creative and unique, served with the elegance of the best French restaurants. There are certain dishes I have to order every time I go (the Yangtze River Lite Fry is unlike anything I have had anywhere else) and yet I can always find something new that I have never tried before.
While I don't usually drink wine with Chinese food, Shanghai's wine list is so good, I can't resist. There are some real gems on the list.
There are certainly some good neighborhood Chinese restaurants in San Francisco. But for Chinese food that rises to the level of fine dining (on a par with Boulevard, Jardinere, Aqua), there is not a single restaurant in the City that can compare.
- Pros: The food is spectacular.
- Cons: Parking can be very difficult
best FRESH FOOD, SERVICE, AMBIANCE with LIVE AWARD WINNING MUSICIANS WHILE YOU DINE - and VALET PKG.

I LOVE THIS RESTAURANT!!
They NAIL it EVERY TIME!! - I can drop in for lunch or dinner, as a single or hosting a huge party.
The decor and atmosphere is immediately relaxing alone or with that special someone, yet comfortable enough to bring a family.
THIS IS THE ONLY PLACE TO BOOK A PRIVATE OR CORPORATE PARTY!!!! AND KNOW THEY WILL MAKE IT A SUCCESS WHILE MEETING ALL YOUR DETAILED REQUESTS!!!
Their LIVE MUSIC SETS YOU IMMEDIATELY INTO A RELAXED BLISS WITH THE PERFECT COCKTAIL.
For those in the know, the PRIVATE CLUB IN THE BACK ( where one can OFTEN come across or mingle with POLITICAL AND ENTERTAINMENT POWERHOUSES) adds a unique dimension to a dining and bar experience.
The SERVICE AND ATTENTION TO DETAIL HAS BEEN CONSISTENTLY IMPECCABLE. No matter who you are, they make YOU FEEL SPECIAL!
MOST IMPORTANTLY---THE FOOD IS ALWAYS FRESH- THE DISHES AUTHENTIC- AND OPTIONS ARE ALWAYS ALIGNED WITH WHAT IS IN SEASON AT THAT TIME.
- Pros: excellent fresh best quality ingredients, taste, and presentation. best service, wonderful ambience
- Cons: none
