Hidden Mission Jewel

by njmclain

One of the best Vietnamese restaurants in San Francisco. The menu ranges from a light a fluffy seafood crepe, to a delicious and traditional catfish in a clay pot.

This wonderfully intimate restaurant is owned and operated by the chef, which makes for a very unique environment. Thuy welcomes most guests by their first names, and is dedicated to providing a peaceful and enjoyable atmosphere for all of her patrons. The overall feel is hip and relaxed, and you can literally taste the quality of the ingredients in each dish.

Elephant Bleu is a star among the other Asian offerings in the Mission, and well worth a trip across the city. And its still secretive enough to make a great tip for friends. The indo combo and pho ga are two of my personal favorites.

Elephant Bleu is a treasure in the Mission. It has great food, and the owner, Thuy, is always very friendly and polite. I go frequently, and the food always hits the spot. I love the spring rolls with meatballs. Delicious. I would recommend it to everyone. The place isn't that big, so it's initimate and you can always get a great meal.

  • Pros: Good food, Service, Inexpensive
  • Cons: Mission parking

Great hideaway Mission Vietnamese

by msernst

Talk about personal service! The owner, Thuy is always there to cook and wait on me whenever I've been in there. She personally prepares some of the best bun la (vermicelli) dish I think I have ever tried here in the city. Always prompt and attentive, Thuy makes my experience at Elephant Bleu so worth it. How many places do you know of where the owner caters right to you? Somewhat small, but really cozy and always fresh and fast entres. It's only a few blocks from my apartment, so I make my way down there all the time.

  • Pros: Excellent food, Personal service, Inexpensive
  • Cons: Small, but cozy

don't bother

I recently "ate" at Elephant Bleu with family and friends. My coffee arrived 2 hours after I ordered it, appetizer came in at 1 hour and 45 minutes. The first entree arrived 2 hours after we sat down and the other entrees came staggering in at 5 to 10 minute intervals. My food was cold before everyone was served. There were only two other diners in the restaurant the entire time and the Waiters on Wheels delivery-person came in and out 3 times. It was not until over 2 hours into our wait that anyone even acknolwedged that we were waiting a long time. The food was fine, but it was not any better than Sunflower Vietnamese which is a block and half away, similar price range, better ambience, and MUCH better service. There is absolutely NO reason to ever go to this restaurant.

  • Pros: edible, fresh
  • Cons: , cold dining room, poor service

great food in smart surounding

I eat at least once a week at Elephant Bleu. It's authentic, fresh, delicious and varied. The service are attentive and helpful, they are glad to help with the ordering. They'll steer you to a balance dinner, so you'll order enough but not too much.

For the appertizers, they are all so tasty, and there are some unsual and delicious main courses: Indo Combo, Southern Style Beff Steak, Sai Gon Pork Chops. They are mouth watering.

I recommended to all my friend.

  • Pros: great food, inexpensive, friendly service
  • Cons: hard parking

Nice ambiance for what you get. Very reasonable prices, friendly service, and decent Vietnamese food. Recommend the quail and the eggplant.
