Where ya gonna eat after 11pm in this town? Not so many options and few that serve food you won't regret in the AM. It's Tops serves "the best pancakes and milkshakes" (that's a fact) and the rest of the menu beats all the other late nights spots by far. Get there before 2am for Anchor on tap. I like the grilled 7oz JoAnne's Salmon Sandwich (a steal at 11 bucks) but sometimes I breakdown and have a swiss patty melt -- I guess it just depends on how many Anchors I've had. Yeah, it's not the French Laundry but for late night cravings & an SF vibe there's no better place at 1am.

  • Pros: great late night dining
  • Cons: it's a diner -- not the City of Paris -- gimme a break

A friend recommended I come here, so I took my sister and mother when they visited. Big mistake. This place is so run-down, inside and out. Very small dining area, the waitress (the ONE they had) didn't greet us, took forever to get our order, and the good took even longer to get to our table and it wasn't even that crowded. The hash browns were so burnt I could barely eat them. Save your money, go to Pork Store Cafe on Haight.

  • Pros: NONE
  • Cons: service, food, ambience, few tables

The food here was excellent (a little pricey for standard diner fare) but the service was terrible! Our waitress was rude and inattentive. She pretty much ignored us though we tried to get her attention several times, preferring to sit at the counter and read rather than do her job. Be careful! Breakfast is delicious but it comes with a huge side of bad attitude.

The Scene
With its vintage deco sign, this treasured remnant of old San Francisco packs surprisingly roomy booths and a row of counter stools into a uniquely angled room, apparently redecorated circa 1972. Incongruous wood paneling and hanging macrame are offset by tabletop jukeboxes, framed '40s ads and the waitstaff's snazzy pink-and-black uniforms.

The Food
The classic American diner fare lives up to the best of the genre, with a few exceptions. Hotcakes are fluffy, soft and steaming, but a patty melt on rye can arrive burned black. Fried zucchini strips are crunchy outside, molten green inside. Soft, greasy fries taste like real potatoes instead of frozen diner spuds. Tangy, thick-cut sides of slaw and potato salad are clearly made according to some German grandma's recipe. For health-conscious eaters, a massive fruit bowl comes piled high with berry yogurt, chunks of just-cut pears and apples, dried berries, granola and juicy grapes.

It's Tops serves solid diner food, excellent pancakes, and has Anchor on tap. The staff might not always be chatty, but they have personality and have always treated me well. If you are looking for an honest diner meal, you won't do better in SF. Sure, you find a better burger elsewhere, but the reason to patronize this place is to spend a while in a homey, neighborhood joint with reliable dishes. If you go looking for a good vibe, and a pint, you'll find it.

  • Pros: families to hipsters, to oddballs, shakes, pints
  • Cons: brunch hour waits, closed tues. eves.

While this place isn't cheap, the waffles (which are the thin American variety, not the oversized puffy Belgian) are stupendous--soft, tender, and flavorful. The staff was nice, even though my friends had a squawling baby (who they had to take outside and caused them to eat in shifts). The bacon wasn't very good (pretty burnt), but the waffles made up for it, and I left full and contented. I'd definitely go back next time I'm in town.

  • Pros: fab waffles, signup seating sheet, comfy and cute decor

I have never had a god meal at It's Tops. In fact, I've spoken to at least 3 or 4 other people who have had similar bad luck with the food.

The staff is also not very friendly, though once in a while you get a server or counter person that isn't completely rude.

If you want a small diner feel, and you don't care about the quality or taste of the food, try this place out. If the food is importatnt, avoid it.

  • Pros: Cozy, relatively cheap
  • Cons: , indifferent staff, no parking

This is in my top five for favorite restaurants in San Francisco - and that is a highly coveted title. The quintessential fifties diner, though opened in the forties I think, serving up generous portions of comfort food. The touchdown breakfast can dispel any lingering hangover ailments if consumed by two pm. My biggest regret about eating breakfast here is that I'm always too full to stay for lunch. The burgers and french fries and chocolate shake are almost worth a few hours of reading the paper at the counter.

  • Pros: gum smacking waitress, generous portions, diner mystique
