Awesome German Food

The food and service are excellent. Everything I have tried on the menu has been great and the portions are enough for two people. The restaurant just recently expanded and is now taking reservations, which was much needed because the restaurant is always busy. The atmosphere is always cheerful, full of happy diners, and loud with conversation, laughter and music. I highly recommend this restaurant, especially for groups.

• Cons: A little expensive...$20+ per dish

AWESOME! :)

We totally loved this place! After a mile walk from the 16th and mission Bart station (!!) we arrived and were greeted by a very friendly server. We were seated promptly and were immediately guided through the beer selection. :) Dinner was amazing, really, really good. I ordered the Jagerschnitzel mit Gemuse und Spatzle... breaded schnitzel topped with mushroom gravy- awesome! German pasta- which is basically noodles in a light sauce and a sweet cabbage salad that should not be dismissed! The potato soup was also fantastic. I loved it so much I am trying to get friends to go back with me this weekend! :) Be warned, the meal portions are overly generous so you may want to share!

The place itself is very modest and cozy. Interesting decor, and the wood interior has a 'in a cabin' feel. The traditional German music is just loud enough to enjoy but not too loud as to overwhelm. All in all, a really great comfortable fun and yummy place- I totally recommend it! :) Enjoy!

Service with a bad attitude and substandard food

The attitude of the female manager or owner and that compounded with the worst Kaesepaetzle I have ever eaten, made for a bad night. I was really looking forward to going there, and would never go back. She was nasty to begin with when we arrived ahead of our friends who had made reservations (although there is a chance that my friend might have been confused as they do not take online reservations it seems). She had an attitude then, and it got really bad when my food arrived, Kaesepaetzle, just a horrible version of that dish, and she came by to ask if everything was okay (my friend ordered venisson, and got beef instead but they insisted it was venisson) and I told her it was not good. She told me some nonsense about this is how they make them in Munich, and I disagreed, and she reprimanded me and was downright nasty.

I would never go back there.

Worst food, worst service, overpriced food, horrible HORRIBLE experience

We waited forever to get a seat (over an hour, even though there were empty tables), and the only reason we stayed to get seated was that it was raining outside. The owner was very rude and when we finally got a seat, we were promptly ignored for another 30 minutes.

The food was HORRIBLE. My friend ordered sausage and got anemic looking hotdogs that weren't even cooked. It looked like they were boiled for about 2 minutes. I ordered meatloaf and got batter-fried pink ham. They gave me the wrong dish!

Disgusting is the best way to describe the food.

The service was beyond bad. A couple next to us got into a fight because she was upset her boyfriend wasn't yelling at the waiters.

Don't try this place out. Go to Walzwerk instead.

Fun Filled Atmosphere, with the best German in Town Hands Down!

My partner and I have come to San Francisco the past 3 years with our friends and Schnitzel Haus is always on our list of must Do's! The moment you walk in the atmosphere is German, and you start to feel right at home! The Waitress and Waiter are very attentive and ultra friendly! We even got them to come party once they closed! No matter who was in the restaurant you never felt like a stranger as you could talk to other tables etc.. just a very festive atmosphere! On to the Food: Awesome doesn't even start!! I was oh so good!! and to top it off, if you are lucky you may even get a special treat from the waitress! (yodle) Anyhow, all in all 10 out of 10 and we will be back next year!

Decorated like an alpine beer hall, with long pine picnic tables and communal benches, the restaurant is a favorite with beer and schnitzel fans. The ample beer selection of lagers, pilsners and porters is served in traditional German steins along with the eight different schnitzels (breaded pan-fried meat cutlets), including a thin and crispy Wiener schnitzel with anchovy sauce. Other dishes of note include beef goulash with German pasta and potatoe panckaes with apple puree.

Authentic? No Way!

By far anywhere near authentic Austrian or German food, a mixture of Austrian-German dishes, with questionable taste (Wiener Schnitzel with anchovy sauce -- holy smokes), prepared for the American palate every Austrian or German finds a bit strange: sweetened meat, strange combination of spices, weird combinations of meat and supplements, far far from traditional. Now, excellent assortment of beer (especially this Austrian Stiegl, oh boy), and wonderful selection of wines (again, try the Austrian Gruner Veltliner-goes with most of the food-delicious). No dishes for the youngsters though, and if they are not accustomed to Austrian-German stuff, theyll have hard time on finding something theyd like. Lastly the price: its difficult to understand why it has to be so expensive; its neither upscale nor exotic enough to justify such high prices. Conclusion: will definitely come back, if not for food and price, but for beer and wine.

Great German Schnitzel

I'd never been to a German Restaurant, so this was a great introduction. I had the Schnitzel with egg and it was wonderful. For those of you non-schnitzel eaters, the pork schnitzel they serve is very similar to chicken cutlets, except it's pork and the cutlets are thinner and denser. The salad before dinner was a little mundane, but other than that, I highly approve of this place. The potatoes and cabbage were good, as was the apple cider. And they give you a ton of Schnitzel! And the ambience is just what it should be: happy and convivial. It is a little pricey, but I feel they honor authenticism and they serve up hearty plates, so that makes up for the price.

Tasty Food but price-y-er than you'd expect for what you get.

First, I was disapointed to find out that the Schnitzel is made with Pork, as opposed to the traditional Veal, particularly considering the price - starting at $17 and going up from there. Portion size of the schnitzel was huge, you could easily split one schnitzel plate between two people with an extra side or two.

We ordered the Hunter's Schnitzel, breaded ($19) and a Sausage Plate ($12 if I remember correctly.) The sausage was tasty, the saurkraut it was served with was well flavored, and the roasted potatoes were excellent, as was the potato soup we were started with. The Hunter's Schnitzel was excellent, crispy and good with a mushroom gravy served on top. The Spatzle was hohum, (and a trifle bland to boot), and the red cabbage was a trifle too sweet for my tastes, but if you like sweet german style red cabbage, you'd probably like it. It had a nice flavor, just not my cup of tea.

Service was good at first, the wait person was full of helpful suggestions on what to order, however, she disapeared after bringing us our meal, leaving my glass empty nearly the whole meal, which I found odd because it wasn't as if it was busy (It was late Saturday afternoon, and we were the only customers.)

Anyhow, the food *was* good, just not exactly on par with what I thought it was worth.
