Gene saved me from pyramid head with his wonderful haircuts to thin out the bulk and shape my hair so I'm wearing it down consistently since I've grown it long. Gene's fun to talk to and a great, positive personality! I never feel pressured into having my hair cut a certain way or to buy tons of stuff. My last salon really pushed product and harped on how terrible growning my grey out would look and that it wouldn't style. Wha??? My hair, thanks to Gene, looks great...long, grey, and super stylish. Merci Gene!

Pros: Great cuts, relaxed atmosphere.

I will highly recommend Gene. I am from New York, where I had a great stylist to whom I was very loyal. When I moved to California, I suffered through many bad haircuts, desperately searching for someone I could count on. Then, one haircut bothered me SOOO much that my boyfriend made me an appointment with Gene to fix it. I don't live in San Francisco, but I can tell you one thing for sure: You can bet I'll be here to see Gene when I need a haircut! I have long, thick, wavy hair, and I like the "long layers" look. Gene fixed my whole horrible, boring last cut with a razor (which I had never seen before), and I felt like such a princess when he was done that I couldn't help but hug him! I read the other reviews complaining about the razor and the attitude... well, my hair feels healthier from it and I am a new loyal customer!

Pros: excellent work

Cons: he's a busy man, so be punctual and be flexible

I have been going to Mes Amis for the past 3 years and I have nothing but praises for the level of their expertise, the friendliness of the staff and the overall feeling of spending an hour or so with good friends. Bravo Gene and company, keep up the good work. see you all soon. roch

WOW!!! What a great experience! I love my new fall color and cut. What a gem I found in Gene Hays at Mes Amis. Great hairdresser, great service, cool atmosphere, even easy to park! I've already gotten lots of compliments on the new "do". The products he recommend make it easy for me to make my hair look as good as when I left the salon. My search is over!

I've been going to Gene for several years, following good reviews from several other friends. I've never looked back. I always appreciate the casual atmosphere and trust him implicitly. I don't even have to say what I want, I don't even look in the little mirror that he gives me. I simply know that I will get what I want. Thanks Gene!!!

I was very dissappointed with Mes Amis, after all the positive reviews. Not only did Gene not listen to what i wanted, but ending up doing everything opposite of what I asked. It took me a year to grow out my bad haircut. Not worth the money, the attitude and the dissatisfaction.

I stumbled upon Mes Amis 193 by fate. I work in the neighborhood and was needing some major highlight/color work on my hair. I decided to come and inquire about their highlight and color service. The minute I came in I was greeted with delight and respect. Having had no appointment, Gene, the owner took me in. After reading so many of the reviews here, I now understand why my experience with Gene was by fate and luck. I am very delighted with my new hair color and highlight. Gene was very candid, welcoming, and very easy going The atmosphere was non-pretentious. The services were reasonably priced with great attention to personal care. I would highly recommend Gene to anyone needing some hair color and highlight work on their tresses. I plan on visiting Gene to work on my hair regularly.

Pros: Gene is skillfull, attentive to detail, a skillful artist

Cons: Make sure you make appointments in advance

I have been going to Gene since 1995. The haircuts he has given me over the years have earned me compliments in New York, all over the US, and Europe. I'm an opera singer who travels for my work, so it's important that I have a look that's unique to me and stylish as well. Gene is always up-to-date on the latest cutting techniques and coloring methods, and he's always been honest with me about what will look best as well as being willing to give me what I want. He's a true artist, a caring human being, and he has surrounded himself with other great people in his salon. I've proudly sent numerous people Gene with wonderful results and will do so again and again.

Pros: Technique, artistry, and honesty all with a beautiful sense of humor

Cons: Gene is booked 4-6 weeks in advance

Gene is not only an amazing hair stylist and color expert, but he is the owner of this salon, and is an amazing guy to boot! I just read a review someone wrote on 6/7/07 who rated this #1 salon in town a 1-star salon, and I wanted to set the records straight. The staff has been extremely friendly to me, and it's been a great experience thus far! For the last 2 years, I've been going to Gene for my hair cut, and yes, he is booked 4-6 weeks in advance for optimal appointment slots. And yes, all the stylists are busy because they are excellent at what they do. Gene is honest and forthright about what he thinks looks good on his clients -- and I for one, appreciate his candor. He advises for and against certain cuts that I am considering, and ends up giving me a fabulous cut every time. He is also such a caring person that he ran out and fed the meter for me (with his quarters, not mine) the last time I was there to make sure that my car won't get towed. Gene, Michael (the receptionist), and the other stylists are such kind people, I don't believe there is a mean bone in their body. BTW, in case you have bangs -- no one has cut my bangs better than Gene! One advice if I may: If you are new in town, start with Gene. I wish I did.

Pros: service; the people; and great with long and straight Asian hair

Cons: not always easy to find parking depending on time of your visit

I've been going to Gene since 1990 and he is the best. Over the years I've sent probably 20 people with a variety of hair types and styles, and they've all been thrilled. In fact, my girlfriends and I have to carry business cards because so many people ask where we get our hair done. We have such a great time at Gene's that three of us book our haircuts together to make a girls' day of beauty. In fact, we even show up to hang out even if only one of us needs a cut that day! He is a perfect professional and loves it if you bring a picture so he knows the two of you have the same vision for your hairstyle. He'll let you know what he can and can't do for your hair, and will suggest how to modify a cut to make it work for you. He makes sure not just each cut is perfect, but each hair is in it's place! He'll develop a relationship with you to make sure he knows you and can give you the style to match your personality. He's given me everything from a super-short pixie cut, to a short bob, to shoulder length hair, and I've loved it all. I've followed Gene to 3 different salons before he opened Mes Amis. If he ever leaves the area I'll be devastated - I wouldn't trust anyone else with my hair!

Pros: Great with short hair, and fine hair
