Price is Right!

I discovered Moishe's yesterday as I was headed to another place to dine. Inside, I discovered a "Chicago style deli" with dozens of pictures and signs of the Windy City. As a frequent traveler to Chicago, it did feel like I was sitting in a deli on Wells or Kinzie Street. The owner, Joe, went out of his way to provide excellent customer service with his jovial and welcoming communication. The sandwich (tuna salad) and side of cole slaw were excellent. Fortunately, my party arrived a few minutes before 12:30 as the place became instantly crowed. Moishe's on Friday also served brisquet which allegedly sells out that day due to popularity.

Great deli sandwich

by bhebdon

I went to Moishe's Pippic today for the first time and have an amazing corned beef sandwich. If you are looking for a Chicago style deli in the middle of the city, Moishe's is the place. The owner, Joe, is a great guy and goes out of his way to make you feel at home. Congrats on your 20th anniversary in business in that location Joe. Well done.

  • Pros: Great sandwich, welcoming staff

Chicago-style Jewish deli serves sandwiches named after famous Second City streets, matzo ball soup, latkes and more traditional faves.

Worth going

by vuchic

While I have to agree that this is not your typical Jewish deli, in a city where there just aren't any good deli sandwiches it was a pleasant surprise. I had the Reuben, and while it was frustrating that it wasn't griddled, I found the meat to be generous and VERY high quality. I have not had corned beef this good in the Bay Area at all, and the cole slaw was fresh and delicous as well. While I can still get a sandwich twice as good for half the price in Philly, I've given up on comparing sandwiches between here and the East. Stick to the simple cold sandwiches that highlight the meat, and you'll be happy. Also, don't even try David's Deli, he should be arrested for charging that much for such crap ($15 reuben!) .

  • Pros: Top quality meat, Good Service, Decent prices(for SF)
  • Cons: , Not East Coast

Great deli

by tommypickle

This is a cross between David's deli (it has amazing meats, great sides, and a fun mellow old school atmosphere) and a vendor hot dog stand that servers great weiners!

The best of both worlds -- Chicago dogs and New York pastrami!

The prices are low enough so that you can order multiple things and feel comfortable sharing and tasting random things on the menu without freaking out at the check.

  • Pros: Selection, Prices
  • Cons: Hours

by fairvaluegirl

not even close

Look, the people are nice. They're even generous with the meat (not cheap, but a fair value). But, this place is not, as billed, a Jewish deli, Chicago-style or otherwise. A reuben, for example, is NOT made with cold corned beef on plain (not even toasted) rye bread, and adding sauerkraut and dressing (both also cold, of course) doesn't make it one. The reuben a a GRILLED sandwich, i.e., hot (or at least warm). If you've never been to a real Jewish deli, and the owners obviously haven't, the least they could do is look in a cookbook.

BTW, I'm not myself Jewish, but I hate to see any ethnic cuisine so poorly executed. It's bad enough how hard it is to get a good reuben in this town. A place styling itself as a Jewish deli should be the one safe haven in the storm.
