Great high end restaurant that you can go in casual clothing.

by JohnRoss12

First of all, this is a high end restaurant, they take reservations, and most people go well dressed. I like to go to restaurants with great food but I do not like to dress up, and its nice to have the option to dress just "comfortable". The food is very good and up to what you expect at this price range. The service is good too, although I personally do not like to be asked how everything is while I have my mouth full. It is considered good service to check up on the customer so I guess they are just doing their job.

They always have something new on the menu and often redo their entire menu with new items. All in all, a typical dinner here with no wine and dessert will cost you about $75 per person. If that is in your price range for a special occasion or just because you want to have great food, I can certainly recommend The Farallon to you.

  • Pros: Good food

Fantastic food and service

by raeanded

Our experience started with the butter which was great and went uphill from there. The Mediterannean Shellfish Soup was light and incredibly flavorful. The seared Kona Blue Kampachi with a light paprika dusting with a truffle ravioli and carmelized onion jus was a new taste sensation for us. The Hawaiin Walu melted in our mouths and the caramel apple sundae with brown butter pecan brittle made me want more. The service was impeccable and this was on Saturday night!

  • Pros: don't even have to go outside if you are at the Post Thestre
  • Cons: pricey but worth it

San Francisco "has been"

by YataYata

Farallon is a San Francisco "has been" that should be embarrassed to consider itself an elite restaurant in this town. I recently had dinner at Farallon and the whole experience was down right unacceptable for the price tag.

FOOD. The food was mediocre, at best. The fish over cooked, temperature of one dish too cold, one dish over salted and a potato accompaniment to one of the meals was dry, hard and had to be cut apart with a knife.

SERVICE. Food is one thing for a "has been" restaurant, but you gotta nail the service. These guys were armatures. We had 4 different people constantly interrupting us, constantly filling up the wine glasses when they weren't even half empty, constantly asking us if we were "ok". I like to dine... these guys wouldn't let us do it.

WINE. Yes, the wine list is very nice, but the waitress suggested wine without even asking us what we would be ordering. My advice, keep your thoughts to yourself unless you really know how to pair a wine. The sommelier (or at least what we thought was the sommelier) came next ~ good guy, knew some things, but tripped up a bit when we told him we wanted a ?local? wine. He then suggested a wine from Washington, Australia and one from Napa. That made me chuckle, so I had to ask him if he learned geography in school.

PRICE. Outrageously over priced for the experience. Head over to Michael Minna and spend your money there.

Great platter dish

by naotake

My favorite dish at Farallon is the grand prix platter dish. A two-level dish of shrimps, clams, oysters, lobsters and crabs are brought to the table, which gives a WOW to the table. The entre is a little less appealing but it does have a sensitive flavoring. I wish the menu had more variety, though.

Pleasant staff, great food, beautiful decor.

by brian_the_knife

OK, so I felt like I had to write and tell of my positive experience @ Farallon. First things first. We were late for our reservation but they worked with us and made sure we had a nice booth just the same. The valet parking was fast, affordable (for the area), and efficient...also, our car was waiting for us before we walked out of the restaurant after our meal. Our server was extremely knowledgeable and attentive and was happy to answer any questions we had. Now I know it's a seafood restaurant, but I ordered the beef and it was good. There was a little bit of fat on it for filet mignon, but it was delicious. It was perfectly paired with the side dishes as well. My date did eat fish, but I forget which kind. Either way, she loved it. I will definitely go back. beautiful decor with delicious food? Do it, but wear deep pocket pants.

  • Cons: Price only.

Great restaurant

by deanog

This is a really, really good seafood restaurant (and the meat dishes are great too!).

The shellfish and fish are really fresh, there is a wonderful selection of oysters and the food is very well prepared and presented.

The restaurant itself has a great atmosphere, the staff are knowledgeable, courteous and approachable and the interior of the restaurant is very interesting with some great design features.

This is a great restaurant.

20,000 Leagues away from fine dining

by marthastupot

For all of it's 20,000 Leagues under the sea decor, Farallon is 20,000 leagues away from the big league...

I had a very disappointing experience at, what I had heard to be one of Americas top ten seafood restaurants. The signs were there early on, starting with a hostess who tersely cut me off when I approached her "I will be with you in a minute"... Now, this would have been fine, had she actually been doing anything. She then proceeded to stand by her computer staring into space for ten minutes and completely ignoring me and my party. We were finally seated by someone else. Service was lacking generally - we ordered drinks and received our starters before our drinks. Food was very ordinary. I had the bluenose bass in a foie gras sauce. The fish was good, but the sauce was watery, thin and tasteless, could have been from a Knorr packet. My friend had the parmesan risotto and quail. The quail was excellent, but the risotto was overdone and also very watery. It should not have been served. The final end to the evening came when we asked to get the quail to go and, while the bill came promptly (first effective service of the evening), the quail never came back. Just like the quail, I will never be seen there again...

  • Pros: Food comes quickly so you can leave sooner
  • Cons: one giant con if you ask me

Great Service & Atmosphere,Poor Food

by chrisrae

My husband and I recently went to this resturaunt for our anniversary and made reservations on the internet. We were very excited when we arrived and our table was immediatly ready and wonderfully located. The kitchen was located in the dining area that they sat us in, but we were so taken by the beautiful atmosphere that this was not a concern. The waiter was very attentive and seemed to be very knowledgable of the menu, and wine. As our entree was presented we both looked at each other and I could tell without words we were not expecting the dissapointment after such wonderful atmosphere and great service. I had ordered the Lobster Special @ $60, and my husband ordered the Halibut. The Lobster came with what looked like steak french fries to me, but with a fancy name. My husbands plate was so sparce and bland. We then thought maybe the dessert could pull them out of the hole they were digging, but not so. Being bakery owners and knowing quality desserts they went down hill fast. The waiter then forgot my coffee that I so much wanted with my dessert and brought it with the check instead. The final ending was with a $360 bill. I dont think we will be returning. If service could be rated they would get a 10, but food was only a 5.

  • Cons: Poor Food, High Price

Excellent service, tasty food!

by lukasw23

I was looking for a good restaurant in San Francisco for quite some time. Having spent almost two years in this city (after moving here from Europe) I had hard times finding something that can live up to my expectations. Now I am writing my first review ever simply because I want "good food lovers" to know that there is a place worth their consideration...and money! Farallon is just great. Service is extremely competent, food is very tasty and remember that not only seafood is good here! I like the atmosphere of this restaurant which is especially recommended for romantic dinners.

To sum up, if you like to eat like a king this is a place for you!
