Avoid at All Costs

While the hotel will draw you in with cheap rates, a good location, a quaint facade, and an admittedly fantastic diner next door, don't fall for any of it! The room was clean, but room's fixtures, many broken, suffered from neglect. The single window revealed an air-vent approximately 8x8ft. and went at least 5 stories up, leaving the room perpetually dark, stuffy, and lonely in a great city. It was necessary to climb on a dresser to turn on the TV and the amount of floor space made it nearly impossible to avoid stumbling over something.
The service was appalling--either nonexistant or grumpy.
The one benefit of this hotel is that it was so horrible, I got to see much of the city in my attempt to stay away from the hotel.
- Pros: I saw a lot of San Francisco in my attempt to stay away from this hotel. They have wireless.
- Cons: Rude staff; Small, stuffy, dark rooms
A small, family-owned hotel in the theater district.

The Scene
The owners of this 42-room, family-owned hotel have lived on the premises for the last fifty years, and they like to brag about the safety of the area. Across from the Curran and Geary Theatres and only a few blocks from trendy Union Square, the hotel is certainly well situated for entertainment and shopping. Keep in mind, though, that the neighborhood borders the infamous Tenderloin District.
The Details
Rooms are sparse, with white walls and a few splashes of solid color to break up the monotony. Ikea-style furniture lends a modern, Scandinavian look. David's restaurant is on-site, and there are also dozens of restaurants in easy walking distance. Complimentary breakfast is served each morning. The front desk closes at ten p.m., but each guest receives a front door key.
