Osha Thai Noodle Cafe

Best Thai food and fast service/ugliest, most uncomfortable restaurant in town
3 Star Rating: Average

This place used to be known for its cute and friendly waitstaff. No more. This is the most sullen group of Thai people I’ve ever seen. Normally, I would just shrug, but some genius decided to replace the comfortable diner style booths with HARD wide wooden black benches and narrow tables. It’s torture sitting on those things more than five minutes and you’d be lucky to fit more than 3 dishes on the tables they’re so tiny. I would say walking into Osha Thai Noodle is like walking into a funeral parlor, but that would be an unfair insult to funeral parlors. Before, it was a funky, informal, comfortable place to eat—now it’s one of the most depressing, ugly restaurants in San Francisco. To me, this is a tragedy, because Osha Thai Noodle also has the best Thai food in SF. What’s superb: duck noodles, pad thai, pad see ew, Osha Sea, pineapple fried rice, Chiang Mai style fried sausage (I’ve never seen it on any other Thai menu in the States), shrimp paste fried rice, but in truth, I’ve never had a bad meal here. That is the one thing that hasn’t changed and the reason I force myself to go every six months or so (I used to go at least twice a week). Also, the service is still speedy, even if ice cold. Memo to the owners of Thai Osha Noodle: replace the black wooden coffin furniture with comfortable booths before you run off the rest of your customers. And while you’re at it, try to hire servers that are at least as friendly as the average American.

Pros: Great food, fast service

Cons: Depressing ambience, grim waitstaff, horribly uncomfortable furniture
