An oasis in downtown

by ranjitas at Citysearch

We went on a week day since a friend told us that the place is packed on the weekends. Apparently they have a new menu. There were plenty of vegetarian options. All of the dishes come with rice and nan bread. We also ordered their mango ice cream for dessert. It's homemade and really yummy. We ate so much that we could not finish what we ordered. Also the place was cheaper compared to the other restaurants we ate at in San Francisco. It was definitely worth the BART ride to visit here.

  • Pros: Lovely atmosphere
  • Cons: parking

Will never go back there again

by minchu at Citysearch

I would avoid this restaurant at all cost. We took some out of country friends there for dinner and were highly embarrased by poor service and poor quality of food, served with no style in beat up dishes and no garnish. The overall experience was bad.

First they forgot one of the two appetizers we ordered. We ended up sharing 2 samosas between 4 people and waiting for the other appetizer. We ordered 4 pieces of bread, they brought one and fifteen minutes later, they brought the other three breads. The chicken tikka was so tough, I had to use chutney to swallow it. I have never had such poor Chicken Tikka. Then, even though they were not crowded, they ran out of all desserts. They had no Indian desserts, only icecream was available.

The food was tasteless, this was the worst prepared Indian food in my experience of eating out. I can tell good Indian food from bad, as I cook Indian food a lot and have eaten Indian cuiine at many restaurants around the world.

a real disappointment

by lima_bean at Citysearch

With all the glowing reviews, I decided to give this Indian restaurant, adjacent to Union Square on a vaguely skeevy side street, a try on a Friday night. The decor was pleasant enough, as was the customer service to start with. Everything went downhill from there. For an appetizer, we ordered the combination vegetable plate, which amounted to a single, cracked papadum atop a doily, two desiccated pieces of vegetable pakora and onion rings and one dry samosa. The sad presentation was matched by the bland flavors and texture of this first plate. I ordered one of the signature cocktails, called Madras Madness, which was made of different types of rum and mango juice. It was so strong and syrupy, I couldn't drink anything beyond my first sip. For dinner, my date ordered the non-vegetarian dinner and I had the black lentils and lamb. My lamb and lentil dish came completely a la carte, and was served simply in a small metal dish. My date's food was presented a bit more festively, and came with vegetable and rice accoutrements. Sadly, nothing we had that night possessed the bold flavors that we so enjoy from Indian food. Whether it was spicy or not, the flavor was what was really missing in our meal, and we won't be returning to this restaurant.

  • Pros: near Union Square
  • Cons: quality, flavor and presentation of the food

On the way to everywhere fun

by rani1 at Citysearch

If you're looking for a place that's classy (but not hoity-toity), has great food (that's not hung up on presentation) and is near the middle of things to do, New Delhi Restaurant is always a good choice. Just a block off of Market St., it's a good place to meet up, have a great dinner, and wander off to do something fun nearby afterwards.

  • Pros: Good casual food
  • Cons: Weekend parking

Excellent nan bread!

by sushmita at Citysearch

What an incredible dinner. We went to New Delhi for our anniversary dinner and were amazed. This was by far one of the best meals that I have had in the city in a long time. The meal, the drinks, and the service were terrific. The ambiance was very Old World hotel, if that makes sense. Very warm, relaxed and inviting.

We dined on such fair as: Kashmiri Lamb Kofta - lamb marinated in yogurt and seasonings over rice. Spicy Madras Tamarind Chicken - chicken cooked with tamarind, spices and coconut millk. Sag Paneer - a lovely creamy spinach dish with big chunks of homemade cheese and garlic. And last but not least, Mango and pistachio ice cream made on site.

All of the food was prepared perfectly, tasted very authentic and reminded me of being in India again. This is truly how all Indian food should taste. I washed it all down with a couple Chai teas and I was good to go with one happy tummy. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone.

  • Pros: Great sag paneer
  • Cons: Parking

The service is warm and friendly, and the food is amazing. From the moment you walk in, you can tell that they want you to enjoy the experience. The menu has a nice variety of options: vegetarian, seafood, meats, north Indian food. The best dish was chicken tikka masala,it was so good that we had to order the second one. Can't wait to come back.

  • Pros: Service and the food
  • Cons: parking

Horrible service - just plain rude

by jackersh at Citysearch

I set up a reservation for a party here. Never received calls back regarding the details. I provided confirmation, but they decided to ignore it and double book. When I called back to ask what happened, they hung up on me.

  • Pros: I've heard the food is good.
  • Cons: Worst service ever.
