The haircuts are OK but the "Just In Time" program seems to be a trick. My last four appointments were all "Just In Time" appointments, where you get a discount since you're taking a last minute slot that someone else canceled. When it came time to pay, the cashier "forgot" to give me the discount and I had to remind them, else they'd charge me the maximum rate. I can understand forgetting one time but all four times they forgot. I don't know if it's deliberate or they're just really disorganized. You have to stay on top of them, which frankly I resent. Their advertised discounts don't count for much if they only honor them under duress.

Response from this business

GREAT to hear you have been returning to our salon, your last being your fourth visit.

Thanks for your comments and patronage. We’re sorry to hear you had to remind the front desk coordinator about the Just In Time Discounts. As far as we are aware, American Male is the only salon to offer such a discount program in the area and possibly all of California. Many full service salons only go up in their rates rather than offering any disounts. Occasionally clients will call in and make an appointment but not mention the JIT discount and or it doesn’t get manually flagged on the appointment ticket. In either event we always honor the discount. We’ll make every effort to prevent it in the future. The JIT program is one of several innovative things we offer as a full service salon for guys. Soon you’ll be able to make your appointments 24/7 online.

I found out about American Male Salon by a coworker. He has been going to them for a couple of years, so I decided to give them a try. I really had been having a tough time the place I had been going to. The stylist I had just couldn’t cut my hair the same way twice but I liked her so I just kept going back (yea kinda dumb). American Male charges a little more than I had been paying but not that much, plus I can go back for a free clean up so to me it is good deal. They take notes on how I want my hair cut so I get the same results every time and I have had two different stylists. It can get frustrating getting an appointment last minute though so you’ll have to call a couple of days ahead or make your next appointment before you leave. I recently have been trying other services such as a back wax and the men’s facial treatments. I really think it is cool to get them done without feeling weirded out. If you are looking for a good place for all the services for guys check them out. It is by no means a frilly, smelly beauty shop or bunch of old barbers

Pros: nice atmosphere and people who know what they are doing

Cons: hard to to a walk in for a hair cut...but ok if call and make an appointment

Great haircut, great products & very friendly & knowledgeable staff, but.... AM markets themselves as an extraordinary salon catering to men (& serving micro brews...cool concept); however, upon arrivel I was offered a "water or soda". I thought to myself, that's strange, all of the editorials I read mentioned something like, "guests are greeted with a micro beer". I have constant access to bottled water, juice & soda at my office, the gym and at home...so why would I or any other guest want more "water or soda"? I didn't want to say, "hey where's my beer", so I just sat there in the lobby comtemplating and reconciling my expectations with the PR campaign. No hard feelings AM... I will be back, but please correct the leaks to the on-line press or let your receptionist know that when a customer walks in, you offer them a cold one.

Pros: AM listens & delivers personal service

Cons: Didn't seem very unique to justify a 300% increase in the costs of a haricut

Thanks for the review about your visit to our salon.

Above all, it is great to hear that you had a great haircut, we offer great products, feel our staff friendly and knowledgeable and that you’ll be back. That’s what we’re all about. We do position ourselves as a full service professional salon for men but don’t promote ourselves as a salon/micro brewery. Sorry about the beer, but the County of Santa Clara has restricted us from offering beer/wine to our clients. We do feel we have been singled out by the county, and would have explained that restriction had you asked. A 300% increase in the cost would mean an original price of $12. To offer guys truly professional hair/color services by an experienced cosmetologist, not a cheap “12-min. chop,” we charge a reasonable fee to obtain top employee personnel (not renters), to get the result our clients want. For under $50, besides a quality haircut with many extras, a FREE neck clean up is included in between your appointments. A great value over other higher end salons in the area.

I'm happy to stop the butchering. After almost three years of qoing to the cheap 15 minute places that are truly not that SUPER or GREAT, I found American Male Salon. Yea it is more than what I had been spending, but then my girlfreind spends almost a hundred bucks on herself. I finally had a true professional hair stylist spend the time to care about and figure out how to cut my hair. The extras included were different than what I expected but nice and didn't add much time. And in between cuts I get to go in free for a clean up around my neck and ears so to me it is a good deal. It's not a foo foo place and they really want me to feel comfortable about other things I can get done there.

I received a gift certificate from my wife about a year ago. I recently got a call from the salon reminding me that I hadn’t used it yet and hoped that I would come in soon. I was so surprised that they called me as I had forgotten about it. I also know that most businesses almost hope you don’t ever use them. So I decided to schedule an appointment which included a haircut, men’s manicure and pedicure (which I had never had before). I was very pleased with the services I received. I never realized how good having my feet taken care of was. I liked how they treated me and plan on going back as a regular customer. It was real cool that they wanted me to try them out more than just keeping the money my wife had spent.

Was looking for a good hair cut experience, ready to pay $50. When I called, I was asked all these questions, gave them my address, where I heard about the place and all that, the girl on the phone was actually quite nice. So, I make a morning appointment, take off from work and rush down there so I wouldn't lose to much time working, when I get there, I was about 7 minutes late, the girl at the shop has no appointment booked for me, she did see that I was 'signed-up' the day before but an appointment was never made. This really isn't cool. BUT....the girl had the great idea of me waiting there for 30 minutes until somebody came to cut my hair, though they were already supposed to be there. I know stuff like this can happen but if they want to charge high end prices for men's hair cuts (have been to many top salons around the world and $50 is not anywhere close to the cheapest) you better ensure that customers are taken care of properly. Sorry, I had to score this place this low...missed out on time/money because you're incompetent.

Pros: hmmmmm??????

Cons: unorganized, 100% guarantee? where was mine? High end salon next to grovery stores

We do take great efforts for 100% satisfaction.

Our salon has a “challenge report” for situations that arise during the day. We are also fully computerized and unable to “double book” services. We show that you had made an appointment for another day from when you came in. We confirm all appointments a day in advance which is why we ask for address, cell number, etc. You would have received a confirmation call from us. When you arrived, another client who had made his appointment 6 weeks prior was in service. Our front desk person tried to accommodate by asking if you could wait about 30 minutes. It is unfortunate that wait time was not acceptable and you needed to leave. We offer two alternatives for guys with tight schedules. One is an express men’s haircut – great haircut in about 30 minutes. We also offer a “Just In Time” program during the work week for all services except massages. By calling in the morning by noon and checking for any open appointments you’ll save 20% by helping us fill in our day. Win/win for everyone!

I must say that I am very satisfied with my experience and enjoyed my visit. The location staff are courteous and helpful. My stylist was very pleasant and she cut and styled my hair very much to my satisfaction. After I left the salon, I received several compliments from others at my workplace. Later on the same day, while driving on I880 with a friend, my friend noticed a couple of girls in an adjacent car checking me out (I didn't notice them as I had my eyes on the road!). All things considered, I was very satisfied with my visit to AM and I will certainly come again.

The salon isn't trying to be somekind of high end metro sexual place. Just a place that guys can go to with all kinds of services. The haircut I get is always good to me...though I'm not looking for somekind of skaterboi or model runway look. It grows out right and the cost to me is reasonable for someone to take their time with me. It be a little more that some fast cuts places but I can get a free clean up in between my regular appointments The gals there have allot of experience and I can go to any one of them since they have records of how to cut my hair...that helps since I can get in there fairly easily that way. They also explain what they are using on my hair and what kind of products match me. To me they don't overly push it but just make sure I have the right kind of shampoo and stuff for my kind of hair.

beforehand: i was intrigued and excited by the idea of a place where men can get good groomings services with minimal fuss and in a friendly environment. After the cut: I was irritated by this place. You aren't allowed to get a typical $20 cut with no frills. In fact, they make you pay for the frills whether you want it or not. This makes it very expensive. I felt this place was more about marketing and selling and using subtle pressure to push you into undesired services. That is what made the experience the most uncomfortable - I felt you could not really talk to the stylist about what was wanted or not. It is more about advertising the "American Male" phenomenon overall. Granted, they use nice redken shampoo, the place is clean and comfortable and your hair smells good but those are all side things. The defining point of a salon/spa should be great quality haircuts and great quality main services - and that was just OK. You should go here if you are looking for any of the following: 1) good smelling hair 2) you want something offered to you to drink 3) you want to waste a lot of cash on little to nothing 4) i don't think they really have the 100% guarantee 5) you want a clean environment 6) you like to browse men's magazines 7) you enjoy subtle sales pressures to buy products or get a full "quality grooming" package you should not go here if you are looking for 1) comfortable and caring salonists 2) a great haircut with great style 3) reasonable pampering 4) to be relaxed (it's hard to relax when you feel it's all about marketing and advertising which is what they are really good at). bottom line: i recommend going somewhere else and will not be going back to this place. it doesn't live up to the hype. The employees weren't very friendly and they seemed even more distant when they try to sell you hair products; it seemed as if they saw you as a giant wallet waiting to be milked dry. i think i have to look elsewhere.

Pros: Clean, Well Lit, Comfortable Environment

Cons: High Sales Pressure, Mildly Apathetic Employees, Doesn't Live Up to the Hype

Good clean feeling about the waiting area. Like sitting in a guys room. Not as hip as I was expecting. But for the area in Mountian View, it seems to fit. The service is Okay, they spent a lot of time on me. I was expecting a more intense cleaning, but it was fairly gentle. Straight talk from the aesthetician about what would work to keep smooth skin very good.

Pros: Quiet, centralized location.

Cons: commercial radio, other partons sometimes loud.

Editor's Review

For little more than this chain's typical $20 cut, guys can upgrade to a full grooming experience.  See the full editorial review.
