A friend was visiting from LA and I picked this place to "impress" him with the great SF gourmet dining experience and instead I got embarrased. I made a reservation the night before and we were properly seated. Here is where the problems started - the waitress could not accomodate a simple switching of incredient request in our appetizer, instead she just "forgot" to bring our appetizer or came up with some shallow excuse at which point we asked her to forget we ever ordered an appetizer. The foccacia bread they brought out (only once btw) looked like it was 5 days old and had been sittign in the open for awhile drying. Then came our meals - we had two pasta dishes, both were half-cooked, very small portions and tasteless..and this was for $20-25 we paid per dish. From the reviews I now understand that perhaps their pizza is good but please please go somewhere else for a good pasta dish!!!

Came here on a whim and loved it! No reservations but sat at the bar...cool bar and great drinks. I didn't want to review this so that I could keep it quiet but too many people know about it already. Great value for the money!

In all honesty, I thought Zuppa was one of the greatest meals I have ever had in my life. Starting from the ambiance and ending with the $$ on the bill. The prosciutto was phenomenal and the speck pizza was a perfect combination of flavors. The service was excellent. Our waitress recommended us the most delicious bottle of wine to compliment everything on the table. I highly recommend this place!!!
Pros: Pizza, ambience, wine
Cons: none

I was just looking up the contact informatin for Zuppa because I had such a great experience on my last visit that I wanted to send some late Christmas presents out to my friends who live in the city. Seeing the last review, I was shocked as I was also there a couple of nights before Christmas and had both a fantastic meal and fantastic service. I don't know much about Italian wines, but the server was happy to ask what we like and guide us toward a great bottle that was really well priced. Oh, and we started with a glass of Prosecco, the best Prosecco I have ever had. The food was great. I especially loved the panceta pizza and the tortelini soup. My husband had the stuffed quail. He loved it! We had panna cotta for dessert. The manager came by and recommended we have a sparkeling dessert wine, Moscato I think, which was such a perfect end to the meal. I know the friends I am buying the gift certificate for will love the place. I'll definitely be back when I'm in San Francisco again.
Pros: wonderful food, great service

I should have taken notice to the last review. I took my family there 2 days before Christmas for a special meal. My husband who is from Italy was excited about "authentic" Italian food. Mind you the restaurant was not full and being able to see the open kitchen, noone was stressed to get the food out. After being seated, it was almost 10 minutes before the waiter arrived. No bread had been put down, water poured, etc. We ordered a pizza and several other appetizers to start along with a bottle of wine . Only the pizza arrived long after the wine came. It must have been 15-20 minutes before the other 2 appetizers arrived and one was cold (supposed to be hot). Not once did the waiter come by to check the food or pour the wine (we poured our own wine the entire time). Then finally the main courses came out and again my husband's bolitto misto was barely warm. When I told the waiter, instead of taking it back, argued that it hand just come from the kitchen - so what! It was still cold. We ordered 2 desserts (they were barely edible - chocolate cake, no flavor, tasted old and an apple tart that was tough and reheated). The last straw was the waiter was quick to give us the bill and then disappeared when we wanted to pay and leave. At this point the restaurant was 3/4 empty. Where was he? I asked another server to take the check and she gave me attitude, said it wasn't her station. The manager finally came over to find out the problem and after letting her know how disappointed we were with the night's events, all she could do was say I am sorry. I will never eat there again, nor do I recommend anyone wasting their time going to this out of the way restaurant as there are many fine Italian restaurants to be had in the city. Stay away!!!!!
Pros: decent pizza
Cons: terrible service, no real ambiance

A group of 6 of us wanted a lite dinner and wine on a Saturday night. We were thrilled to be able to be seated immediately without a reservation. The menu does not have may choices, but almost all of the dishes were excellent. The one thing I will say is the service was terrible. Our server was not happy we were not ordering a full meal and ignored us for the majority of the night. We had to beg for service. He brought us our 2nd bottle of wine and didn't even pour it! After the 3rd bottle of wine he was more attentive. The decor is very nice, the food is great and even though the service was bad, I'll count it for an off night.
Pros: Food, Prompt Seating, Decor
Cons: Service, service, service

Small menu and very slow service. There were two other parties and we still felt like we had to flag the waiter down. Also, he didn't tell us he substituted one of the appetizers, antipasti because they were out. We ordered appetizers first, but clearly we were no way of finishing it. After waiting a long while, we had to ask him for our entrees, and he said where are we going to put it? He didn't even put in our orders! We were ready to go! So we ended up telling him to box up our pizzas. Terrible service! Not much of a lunch menu and the antipasti was terrible. Although soup, of course, salad and pizza was good.
Pros: good zuppa, salad, and pizza
Cons: horrible service and long wait time
