Great new restaurant on Union
by critic1010 at Citysearch
We've been here twice since it opened 2 months ago and each time has been great! The first trip was a weeknight, so they were pretty slow. We were seated right away, had wonderful service and the food was amazing. Our second visit was on a Friday night. We called ahead to make reservations. we were seated 45 minutes later than our reservation, however they made it up to us with our free glass of champagne as well as dessert. The service here is wonderful...thoughtful and very knowledgable. I'd highly recommend the linguini with spicy crab sauce (delicious!) as well as the cheese plate. It's always an extra bonus with me when restaurants offer cheese plates.
- Pros: food, ambiance, service
- Cons: parking, long waits if crowded
Capannina an Italian Restaurant that belongs in North Beach
by Edward Voss at Citysearch
The food was mediocre especially for the price. The service rushed and the waiter indicated that he wanted us out of the restaurant so he could get the table. The wine pours were stingy and the bar doesn't even have Grappa. This restaruant is highly overrated. The restaurant reminds of the tourist restaurants in North Beach, San Francisco and Florence, Italy that cater to ignorant toursits. I will not go back.
Very delicious Italian!

Capannina has delicious Italian food! I went there for dinner on a weekday night and it seemed pretty empty so I was concerned, but was pleasantly surprised. I started out with the Gamberi Piccanti Con Polenta. They were little polenta cakes with spicy prawns over them. It was a really great appetizer. For an entree I ordered the Tonno alla Griglia con Risotto ai Gamberi Piccanti. The Ahi was really fresh and the prawn risotto was perfectly made. The service at the restaurant was excellent. I will definitely come back here.
- Pros: Good food, good service
What a great find!

After reading all the user reviews for Capannina. I decided this would be the rest. to take my Boyfriend for his Bday. Not only was the service and food outstanding. They brought over a couple of candles and dimmed the light for us to create a romantic setting..How cute! They even sang Happy Birthday to my boyfirend in Italian. The chocolate cake is to die for. A must if you want to take family or friends out for a special occasion.
- Pros: staff, food
- Cons: none
We found everything in this neighborhood gem: great food, service and atmosphere!

I usually don't review restaurants unless they are very bad, but in this case, my husband (who is an Italian)and I wanted to share our favorite italian restaurant with everybody. We've been going to Capannina regularly for a while. Althought we try new restaurants all the time, this restaurant is still our find. When we want to make sure we have a perfect dinner experience we go there. We had a large dinner party there once and everybody was so impressed by the service and food. All glasses were always filled, the waiters were friendly and the dishes came in timely fashion, all at the same time. The food was great! We just enjoyed ourselves and they did the rest. The owner and the staff are always so nice and make us feel welcome. The ambiance is refined and cozy. It's never too loud even tough the place is always full. But the best is the food! The dishes are well presented and in decent portions, and everything we ever ordered has always been delicious! We could not forget the tiramisu... soooo good!
I recommend to make reservations before you go on weekends.
- Pros: ambiance, food and service
- Cons: parking
Wonderful food and superb service
by marlenejw46 at Citysearch
My sister and I share dinner about twice a month when she visits from Sacramento. Last night was the third time we visited and have yet to be disappointed. The food is always superior and the service is friendly and as it should be. Don't make the mistake of skipping dessert as they are absolutely wonderful. This is truly one of our favorite spots.
- Pros: Good size portions, pleasant intimate ambience, great flavors
- Cons: parking can be difficult in this neighborhood
Great food and great service!

I had dinner here w/ some friends this past weekend. The food was fantastic! I had the gnocchi w/ the wild boar, my friends had the cioppino, the steak and the seafood special. We all had a taste of each other's entree and all of it was super good. Oh and the dessert - we shared a pear tart w/ vanilla ice cream - let's just say I wanted 2nd's and if I wasn't full I would've had 2nd's. Our waiter was excellent, very helpful with everything - recommeneded a great Chianti. The decor was very cool too, great art work.
- Pros: Food, staff
- Cons: can't think of any
Perfect ! Great Service and Great Food
by cscottstone at Citysearch
What a wonderful discovery ! After learning that our old favorite (Bonta) had closed, and our old reliable( Prego') had gone downhill, we were so pleasantly surprised to encounter this incredible restaurant. Wonderful food, SUPERB service ( they treated us like we had been coming there for 10 years), and an overall great experience -
- Pros: Service, Wine Selection, RISOTTO !!!
Are You In Or Out

Impressive Italian food. The wine list is also quite good, including a number of great wines by the glass. The servers are friendly and professional. However, the owner appears to divide the diners into two categories -- ask for an after dinner limoncello and to find out where you stand.

real Italian food - outside of Italy
by sgiannini at Citysearch
I've grown up eating what I considered good Italian food, but never realized what I was missing until I traveled to Italy 10 years ago. 10 years older, and a lot wiser, I know a good meal when I have one. Capannina IS truly great Italian food. Excellent wine list. Not to mention the wonderful staff and overall dining experience. The manager is a true professional. I now put this in my top 5 dining locations in all of San Francisco - well done!
- Pros: Food and Wine, Management, Location
- Cons: Parking
