great during the day; loud and crowded at night and during sports events
by quietmouse33
This is a nice neighborhood bar that is good for a drink during the day. At night it can get crowded and loud. The prices are ok. Sometimes the bartenders can be unprofessional, but not usually. They attract a sports crowd, which is really a turn-off for me. The bar is nice inside and it's clean. There are also a few table you can sit at.
- Pros: clean, nice decor, good for daytime or happy hour
- Cons: sports-oriented, can get loud and crowded at night or for sports
Best Damn Boody Mary I've ever tasted
by nchong800
Honest and hospitable staff, played a round or two of a dice game called "fours", excellent game, and had thee best damn bloody mary ever and I've had my share. Would have stayed all day but had to head out, it's an excellent place!
Award-winning cocktails, a neighborhood vibe and eco-sensibility--it's the only green-certified bar in the city--at this Mission bar.

Around in various incarnations since 1893, this one-room bar was restored in the mid-2000's to its Victorian-era glory complete with mahogany walls and classic lamp fixtures. The space is a cozy fit, but plenty of red bar stools and five high tables offer ample seating and views of the four TVs, each one tuned to a separate station. The Mission's "Cheers"is offers something every night, from Monday's dart tourney to Tuesday's pub quiz to Thursday's ladies night. World class cocktails include a list of specialty "Elixir" shots (such as Amaretto mixed with Baileys Irish Cream). You'll also find a wide-selection of American and hard-to-find European brews, such as Spaten Pils and Leffe Ales, on draft and in bottles. The daily happy hour from 3-8pm packs 'em in, and Mission bar hoppers fill up the joint on weekends.
Very friendly staff, but Elixir is dead most nights

This is a great place to go with a big group or maybe with a date, but not to meet new people.
The bartenders are very charming and friendly.
Great Classic San Francisco Bar
by gfinazz
If you come to SF and want to hang out with chill SF locals -- this is your spot. Older than dirt, but has plently of skirt...
Had the pleasure of meeting the owner, dude's name is... H. Great host!
Great beers on tap

You can't go wrong with this joint. The current owner (a guy named H) has pulled together one really cool place to hang out with friends and enjoy a few bevs.
Stinky bar
by juve
I must say that this is one of the worst bars I have been to. Maybe the staff has changed recently, but I didn't see any of the good attributes described in some of the other posts.
The bartenders were rude, did not know how to make most of the drinks we ordered and were just very slow over all.
With all the bars available on Valencia street and 16th street, Elixir better shape up if they like to attract people.
THE JUKE BOX WAS AMAZING
by geno2269
I was in town only for a few days and looking for a bar that had a digestible juke box. Being 37 I grew up listening to Big Audio Dynamite, The Clash, and Fishbone- Anyway this bar had everything I could ask for in a Juke Box simply beautiful. I met the owner and he was a very very nice guy. What more could you want from a neighborhood joint. An owner who works the bar and a juke box that will tickle your goodie spots. Awesome all the way around.
- Pros: non
- Cons: Owner works the Bar, lots of beers, not pretentious
Killer Sunday Bloody Mary Bar
by monch13
Ahhh.... now I'm feeling the resurrection kick in. Just after digging into one of Elixir's tasty Sunday brunch Bloody Mary bar. Do It Yourself style, with all the spicy stuff and lots of vegetable garnishings. Who needs breakfast?
Nice Neighborhood Bar
by missmockingbird
This place is greatly improved since it was bought by new owners and upgraded. (Previously the bar was called Jack's Elixer and it was kind of divy.) Now the interior is beautiful with restored wood and it's also very clean inside. The drinks are good and the prices are good too. It's a nice neighborhood bar for a casual drink. Service is really good and friendly when the owner is there- but I did end up with a ditsy bartender once who didn't know how to make a black and tan- I haven't seen her in a while, maybe she's gone. Highly recommended as a neighborhood bar. A good addition to the area.
- Pros: nice interior, good prices, good service
