Best Indian Food

by livefunk at Citysearch

The New Ganges serves fresh and tasty Indian food. Although a vegetarian restaurant, anyone would enjoy the food here, as the quality is much better than your typical Indian fare. There is an interesting and varied menu. The appetizers and dishes were expertly prepared and served with pride. The location is an ideal stop if you are taking a drive to or from the beach area.

More Than Just Dinner

by YfromSeattle at Citysearch

Our family is vegetarian and we were looking forward to eating at New Ganges on our recent trip to San Francisco, after reading multiple good reviews. When we walked in there were only a couple other customers in the restaurant, but we were immediately greeted by the jovial and enthusiastic owner, Aftab. From the very beginning Aftab let us know that he would be dining "with us" that afternoon. The service was unbelievably attentive. When Aftab was not teaching us the correct way to enjoy his food, he was giving us advice on life.

The food was very good. Aftab let us know as soon as we were seated, the food is entirely fresh. none of the food is frozen, and it definitely shows (or in this case, tastes.) The highlights of our meal were the eggplant bharta, aloo gobi, whole wheat chapatis and a delectable mango ice cream.

If you're in the area and enjoy good Indian food, you should definitely give New Ganges a try. Aftab brings more than just a meal to the table, and our family is still talking about it days later.

Best Veggie Indian in SF: Order Take Out, Don't Sit Down

by sfrhodes at Citysearch

Very good food, some of the best Indian food in the city! But... the guy talks a little too much and the ambiance has much to be desired. My first experience was as follows: My wife and I walked in off the street and were seated promptly. There were a few couples there already. In order to read the menu, our host turned the house lights on, shedding light on the menu but removing the little bit of atmosphere in the place - taking some of our seated neighbors by surprise... He took our order, turned out the main lights, and gave the disclaimer that if we didn't like it he would take it back. He meant it. The first 2 dishes came out nice and hot. He proceeded to feed my wife her first bite, scooping up with the spoon on the table a bite of dahl. The only thing missing was the Cho Cho sounds... We both felt a little uncomfortable, but were trying to be open to the new experience. He then went in for a follow up, and I said to him we could take it from here.

In summary, Great Food, but call ahead and order take out.

  • Pros: Amazing Food, Fresh Produce
  • Cons: Poor Lighting, A little too in your face service

Cute Little Place

by nadine4200 at Citysearch

When a friend recommended me this place, I went to check it out. It's a small little restaurant, very quaint. The owner/host/waiter was quite agressive, but I thinks that's because he believes in what he's doing. The bartha (eggplant) was quite enjoyable. I was impressed that the waterglass kept getting refilled without any prompting. The samosas were very fresh and delicious.

Check it out

by ericamarchand at Citysearch

I was the only customer on a Thursday afternoon, and the very attentive owner pulled my chair out, unfolded my napkin, ceremoniously fed me my first forkful of food, and took me back into the kitchen to sample the freshly made (and excellent) yogurt. My chickpea and spinach dish was excellent, as good as any I've had. The rice was perfectly cooked, the cucumber-yogurt salad complimented everything, and the chai was good.

A note about the ambience, but not to deter you -- the restaurant is tiny and has a kind of dive-y shabbiness, though the owners do their best to dress it up. I would normally have passed up a place that looks like this, but the quality of food and owner's hospitality more than made up for atmosphere. If you too are an ambience snob, get your food to go, but definitely check this place out.

  • Pros: Quality of food, Hospitality, Great owners
  • Cons: Ambience

The food was delicious, the staff very attentive, and the prices quite reasonable. If you would like more vegan dessert options, you can phone ahead and they'll make something special.

  • Pros: All vegetarian, great service, good food
  • Cons: parking, of course

A cool place

by asausser at Citysearch

Granted, the owner/host is somewhat over-solicitous but if you just go with it and enjoy yourself and the food, this is one of the most unique and cool places in the city to get vegetarian eats. He will suggest items on the menu that you never would have ordered to begin with - and you won't regret it. Everything I've had at New Ganges has been delicious, and contrary to a previous review, I've never experienced it being oily and unhealthy. Rather, you feel like you're eating a home-cooked meal that's prepared with time and love.

  • Pros: Not loud, Not crowded, Easier parking
  • Cons: Needs atmosphere

New Ganges

by thomas lee at Citysearch

The New Ganges Restaurant is, undoubtedly, one of the best restaurants in SF. Certainly, it's the best Indian vegetarian food around. The food is superb and is so fresh. The flavors are variegated, distinctive and exquisite. The service is great and the host is utterly gracious and inviting.
