Reviews don't reflect the experience

This is a hole in the wall in middle of nowhere. My experience left me seriously underwhelmed. If you do end up here, keep your expectations low
- Cons: Hospitality, Service, Ambience
terrible food & annoying service

The food here was the worst Indian food I have ever had! I was in India for 6 months one time, and 6 months another, so I know a little about the subject... and this was just horrible. There was nothing subtle or interesting at all about the spicing - lots of cumin, and that is it. I have a feeling that the restaurant is writing its own good reviews, or that the people who are giving good reviews have just never had actual Indian food before... I was so hoping for a great Indian vegetarian restaurant in SF, but this is not it. I have given it a few chances, thinking I must have been there on a really "off" night, but each time it was so bad I couldn't eat most of it. And the waiter (owner?) was so annoying - he wouldn't leave us alone, and kept bragging about his awful food, like he was trying to convince us. And last time I was there the decor was nonexistent - there were NO decorations at all, just faded yellowish bare walls, and there were actually random things lying about everywhere. No effort to make the place pleasant. I won't give it another chance.
- Pros: none
- Cons: bad food, annoying service, no decor at all
I'm sorry but this place was TERRIBLE.

AWFUL food, cold service, and the ambiance was chilling. i do not recommended this place to people who love true indian food.

crazy owner! good food.

The first time I went...the owners self-compliments and food suggestions were OK cause I was with 10 people. The second time the pushiness was a little much. The food was pretty good...but the owner doesn't give enough time to chew before attacking you with more recommendations or how great the dishes are. The owner even took a piece of a samosa and dipped it in both the chutney and mint sauces and fed it to my friend. He insisted the combination of the sauces was going to be out of this world. If anything...it was creepy; which is why we won't ever go back...no matter the quality of the food. Note to owner: stay behind the scenes and let people enjoy the food.
Not worth going out of your way..

for this place. I had read several positive reviews before trying this restaurant, and now I honestly don't know who could be clueless enough about Indian food to think the food here acceptable. There was more oil in the korma that I ordered than vegetable, disgusting! The naan was heavy even for naan-- this would be ok if it had some flavor. All the dishes we ordered we recommended by the owner so I don't think we misordered. Just another mediocre curry joint, not that SF needs another.
- Pros: quick seating
- Cons: over fried food, pompous service
Let Down

I recently moved to San Francisco from New York, and came to New Ganges after seeing it ranked as one of the best veggie restaurants in the city on citysearch. I honestly do not know who was voting for this food. The eggplant bharta (my favorite dish) was bland, and I believe I can make lentils of a similar (if not better) quality in my own home. The people working in the restaurant were very nice and obviously enthusiastic about their work--if the quality of the food half matched the enthusiasm this place might be worth a visit.
- Pros: quiet, enthusiastic owner
- Cons: food, location
