What users are saying:
terrible food & annoying service
by 23stella at Citysearch
The food here was the worst Indian food I have ever had! I was in India for 6 months one time, and 6 months another, so I know a little about the subject... and this was just horrible. There was nothing subtle or interesting at all about the spicing - lots of cumin, and that is it. I have a feeling that the restaurant is writing its own good reviews, or that the people who are giving good reviews have just never had actual Indian food before... I was so hoping for a great Indian vegetarian restaurant in SF, but this is not it. I have given it a few chances, thinking I must have been there on a really "off" night, but each time it was so bad I couldn't eat most of it. And the waiter (owner?) was so annoying - he wouldn't leave us alone, and kept bragging about his awful food, like he was trying to convince us. And last time I was there the decor was nonexistent - there were NO decorations at all, just faded yellowish bare walls, and there were actually random things lying about everywhere. No effort to make the place pleasant. I won't give it another chance.
- Pros: none
- Cons: bad food, annoying service, no decor at all
Best Vegetarian Indian Food On Planet Earth?
by blakelyons at Citysearch
There have been two defining moments in my life. The first was when I was born, and the second was when I tasted the food and basked in the service of New Ganges Restaurant. You will not find a freezer or refrigerator within a two mile radius of the place. The reason for this, of course, is that all of the food is exceptionally fresh. The vegetables taste as though they were harvested just before being placed in the restaurant's magical ovens. Speaking of which, I'm also pretty sure you will not find a chef within a two mile radius of the place either, because what appears to be a kitchen is actually the magical kingdom of culinary wizards. There are no words to describe the experience of eating their Bharta, but it makes the rest of life seem dull and trivial. Finally, the host and owner of New Ganges is probably a prophet. Not only did he watch over my friend and me, making sure that we were in ecstasy over his food, but he oversaw the designing and construction of each of our bites, guiding us with his expertise, and ensuring the quality of our experience. He rightfully takes great pride in New Ganges, and made us feel as though we were guests for dinner in his own home. He also has a great sense of humor, a warm and inviting charisma, and a wonderful smile.
I don't know much, but I do know that New Ganges is a superb restaurant. Every night that you don't have dinner there, you are robbing yourself of a wonderful evening.
- Pros: You name it
- Cons: I don't live in the restaurant
Great Indian Food in SF
by jothi at Citysearch
I've been eating indian food my whole life, and have been to India numerous times. The food at New Ganges is made fresh, nothing is frozen and it tastes great. The service is also great, I've called a few times just a few minutes before closing time, and they were always able to make me what I wanted. My favorite item on the menu has to be the paneer pakoras, and I would highly recommend them to everyone.
Satisfied craving for spicy Indian food, nice people

While my boyfriend and I were a little concerned that we were the only diners in the restaurant on a Friday night, we needn't have worried. The service was warm and friendly, and the food was delicious and fresh. The samosas were very spicy. The house specials were especially good. We brought our own wine with us, which wasn't an issue at all, and no corkage fee. Will definitely go back to New Ganges.
- Pros: excellent food and service
- Cons: parking

delightfully fresh indian food

My wife and I stumbled into here one afternoon and we were immediately entranced. They have hands down the best okra in town, fresh, well spiced and not too oily. We sopped them up with delicious chappatis and topped them with some tasty carrot pickle and hot sauce.
Selina fell in love with the baked banana and the sweet owner even gave me a rose to give to her! We'll definitely be back!

Meatless Indian fare in a quirky Inner Sunset eatery.

In Short
The only vegetarian restaurant within city limits that specializes in Indian cuisine, this small, mom-and-pop eatery fills the niche with ease. A loyal crowd of neighborhood herbivores sits at white-clothed tables in a sparsely decorated dining room and nosh on wildly popular samosas, fresh chai and curries; an assortment of vegan desserts and house-made yogurts are also available. The very hands-on proprietor is quick to offer recommendations and point out that all dishes use fresh ingredients.
