A Cut Above

by CJ4050 at Citysearch

I am a "foodie". My wife and I were planning on going to Gary Denko's restaurant, but couldn't get a better seating than 10pm for months, after multiple calls - and I had a fixed weekend flight schedule. So - we punted. I wanted to keep it "light", but we both wanted the best that San Francisco could offer. After a couple searches, talking to the concierge at our hotel, and friends - we went to Okoze Sushi. We were blown away. I live in Seattle, and thought we had the corner on the market with regard to fresh fish. These guys have a small venue and something very, very special. Go with the chef specials, and the recommendations of the wait staff. For a venue of about 40 - they have 4 sushi chefs and 3 waitresses, and they tend to the guests in the best of attentive Japanese tradition.

  • Pros: Innovative, Fresh, Service Oriented
  • Cons: None

Fabulous!

by lilstacy1210 at Citysearch

I had dinner at Okoze last night and had the best experience. The sushi was the best I have had in a while. The Sushi chefs were great! Very pleasant and enjoyable to watch. There was minimal waiting for a table and the service was excellent. I will definitely eat here again.

  • Pros: Great Sushi

Better than Sushi Groove!

by russianhillgirl at Citysearch

I live really close to Okoze and I am so happy it opened, Sushi Groove is really yummy too but Okoze's atmosphere is much nicer, the chefs are so cute and nice- definitely did sake bombs with them one night when everyone had left...

Food is great- specials are always amazing, I even tried monkfish liver and it was delish...

If you want something cozy, not super fancy, but wonderful sushi go here!

Fresh Fish

The Owner at this restaurant is also the sushi chef, I believe he has never taken a day off since the opening and is friendly and warming. Price may be high but it is worth it

good sushi but overpriced

by rk1042 at Citysearch

We just moved into the neighborhood and were anxious to try it. The sushi was very good, better than most. Service was immediately prompt but after we were served we received no attention for the remainder of the evening. It wasn't that they were busy, we were simply ignored. We both had empty wine glasses throughout most of the dinner. And we couldn't get anyone's attention for another look at the menu to order more stuff. Desert consisted of two choices, both bland. We each (two people) ordered a salad, a roll specialty, wine by the glass and a desert. We left hungry after paying a $100 tab (including tip). It's really too bad about the service and the pricing because the sushi is very good.

  • Pros: very good sushi
  • Cons: pricey, unattentive service

sooooo gooood!

by marrkoss at Citysearch

As of writing this review, Okoze had a 9.6 overall, and from my perspective that rating is well deserved. I have been to a lot of sushi restaurants, and I can only think of three that I like better (I have been to over 30). Okoze has spectacular fish, eclectic dishes, beautiful presentation (definitely one of their stong points) , and very very good service. This restaurant is not cheap though so expect to pay as much as you would at one of the other big boys (i.e. don't be surprised by a $70 bill for two). the price, however, is in line with the quality. One other perk, it is never crowded so you will not have to wait for a seat. In conclusion, if you stop by a certain other sushi house right around the corner and are turned off by the blaring music and bustling clientele, stop by Okoze for a more soothing traditional, but equally delicious (and expensive) meal.

  • Pros: gorgeous presentation, quiet soothing atmosphere, great fish, right off Hyde (nice walk)
  • Cons: $$ (but that's sushi)

Awesome sushi!

by drfstein at Citysearch

This is the best place. Feels like an episode of Cheers when you walk in. All locals that totally know the sushi chefs. Fresh food, awesome chefs...what else do you need? ok...kind of pricey but no one complains after they've eaten there. Yeah!

  • Pros: Fresh food
  • Cons: price

amazing sushi

by 02aes at Citysearch

it's sad to see that anyone would write a negative review of a sushi restaurant based on portions or price. personally, i've found that when it comes to eating sushi, you usually get what you pay for, and Okoze is actually quite reasonable when you consider that the quality of sushi here is top notch. I went with a group of 7 people, and after ordering all the sushi we could eat and several bottles of sake, our bill was still less than $50 a piece (with more than 20% tip). True, you could find much better prices at an all-you-can eat sushi joint, but the fish would be lower grade and not as fresh. as someone who has eaten at great sushi restaurants in Tokyo, New York, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, I have to say that dinner here ranks as one of my favorite sushi dining experiences. The eel and scallop nagiri were particularly delicious, as were the specialty rolls (such as the Russian Hill) and the spicy fatty tuna roll. if i lived in SF, i think i would be at this place every week.

  • Pros: super fresh, succulent sushi
  • Cons: the fact that this restaurant is in SF and not my home town

Don't judge a restaurant by its decor...

by nvr4get911 at Citysearch

We were greeted by the curtesy head bow of the sushi chef and quickly seated by an amicable waitress on a Friday night. We appreciated the ambiance of bamboo covered walls, natural branches and uniques light fixtures. We were less impressed by the moderately priced small portions. Do not expect to be full when you leave this restaurant unless you spend a pretty penny. The best thing Okoze Sushi has going for it is the original "Swenson's" next door!

  • Pros: Ambiance
  • Cons: price/portion ratio

Good sushi, but small portions

by susanjc102 at Citysearch

Before going to this place I researched the ratings here. When you go into the restaurant you are greeted by the sushi chefs and seated promptly. The sushi was fresh and tasted good, but their portions were so small. For the price you pay you don't leave feeling fulfilled. I think they do this so you feel like ordering more.

  • Pros: Fresh sushi
  • Cons: Small portions
