Best Indian Food
by brandon1111
Best indian food in bay area. Price is cheap and very very good. the best Tandori Chicken...juicy!!! My favorite Lam Curry really satisfying. The only downside is parking, but i paid for the 2hr $8 right next door. Patron seems going away when it gets dark, maybe because of the area. This place serves good food, good food, good food. If you don't care about the ambience, this is the place. The place is not dirty, just need to be polish. Will go back again and again.
- Pros: Food
- Cons: Parking, neighborhood
Low prices, courteous service and a spotless setting distinguish this Tenderloin Indian restaurant.

The Scene
With an open kitchen and long windows overlooking Jones Street, this clean, uncluttered eatery offers an alternative to the grittier Indian and Pakistani restaurants in the area. Still, the atmosphere is decidedly no-frills. Diners order at the counter, take a number and pick up their food when the number is called.
The Food
Vegetarians and meat lovers will be equally delighted with the crowd-pleasing menu. Start with doughy naan bread, stuffed with spicy ground beef, chunky potatoes or chopped onions. For a main dish, try chicken korma curry, featuring tender chicken cooked in mild curry sauce with yogurt and spices. Bengun bharta, a mix of onion, tomatoes and spices with mesquite-smoked eggplant, is also a good find. Tandoori fans will enjoy meaty lamb boti, marinated in a complex blend of warm spices. Palak paneer is a decadent dish of cooked spinach and airy cubes of homemade cheese.
Our pick for Tandori-loin

Cheap and sort of fast. Get there before 7pm on Friday to avoid the wait. Better than anything else you'd get in the Union Sq area. Worth the walk. Aloo (potato) naan and the ground been kabob is good. Trying to taste everything on the menu, will take a while. A little lean on the meat portions, but it's the sauce!!
- Pros: cheap and spicy
- Cons: can fill up
stays open late, cheap, and yummy.

yummy place in the tenderloin. order your food at the counter, sit down, they bring your food to you, then walk back up to the counter and pay when you're ready to leave. I love that the place stays open til midnight, it's clean, no frills, and has yummy food. and for those that are not lactose intolerant, there's self-service free chai at the back of the room.
- Pros: clean, stays open late, good food
- Cons: in tenderloin, parking
Can't go wrong
by blackmamo
Stop in for a quick bite or bring a bunch of friends for a big sit-down. You might want to call them first if you do that because they get very busy. I've tried almost everything on the menu, and you can't go wrong. Great prices, and quick service depending gon how busy they are.
Cheap Prices, Good Food, not so good service
by mjmilner
We were in SF for a convention and tried Chuntey from a recommendation from the desk at the Hotel Adagio which is just around the corner. The food has good flavor but the service is poor. I had chicken vindaloo which is suppossed to be one of the spicier dishes, NOT SPICY at all, and small sharp bones not removed from chicken. We also ordered Briyani which we never had delivered to our table. I have had much better food and service fom the Chaat Cafe!
- Pros: Close to hotels, Cheap Prices
- Cons: food preparation

I was on vacation with my boyfriend, we literally got off the plane, went to our hotel and found Chutney. We had a great time, we both loved the food, the fast service and it was very inexpensive! During our week in San Francisco we went 3 times. Next time I am in SF, I will be at Chutney!
Do not get chicken curry
by christinawalter
It is a cute restaurant. The naan was good, however, my chicken curry was all bones and fat....hardly any chicken at all!! I was disappointed after all the good things I have heard about this place. I took a few bites and just ate my rice and naan. Perhaps the vegetarian dishes are better.
- Pros: inexpensive, casual
- Cons: chicken
Best of Value Indian Restaurants
by cpchong
This is our fave "value" Indian restaurant - comparing to Naan'n'Curry, Pakwan, Shalimar, etc. Definitely seems to be the cleanest of them, good service, and very tasty food. Also a good intro place for out-of-towners who have never eaten Indian. Yes, there are some traditional Indian restaurants that are better, but for pure value and an easy meal, it's hard to beat Chutney.
- Pros: Food, Value
- Cons: Parking
The Best Indian Food In The City
by sid_presley
I started eating here when they first opened, because they had no business and I can get my food quickly. Turns out the food is fantastic, better than the other local places. I must not be alone in my thinking, because these days there's usually a line to get a table. We have many visitors from Singapore and other parts of the world, and we bring them to Chutney. In fact, we usually dine in groups of 10 or more when visiting. Meat or veggie, I love everything on the menu. We usually order a variety each time and we share. Our only consistant is biryani, my wife's favorite. One plate can feed 2 people. One word of warning to spice wimps...The food can often be spicy, so speak up if you can't handle it. Also, try a Salaam Cola while you're there. I love this place!
