Best deal in a recession
by gamer49
Came in the other night and the place was kinda quiet, as is the norm these days I guess. Too bad, the prix fixe is only $29.95 and you will be well fed. Had the split pea soup with ham, what a great soup for a cold rainy night. Then I got the Hoffman farms fried chicken....probably the best chicken I ever had, and I like chicken. Then finished with the apple and huckleberry crisp, all in all very satisfied. The wine list is pretty extensive and reasonably priced, with lots to choose from by the glass. Service is very friendly, and towards the end of my dinner the place started filling up, and it seemed like they were regulars. I will probably become one, too.
- Pros: good prices, good vibe
- Cons: none
Cozy place, tasty food!
by wineguy7
Mrs. Wineguy and I have eaten here many times and it just seems to get better with each visit! Last night we slurped down a half bottle of crisp Sancerre with our first courses. Mrs. Wineguy had an Antipasto plate that included several types of salamis as well as a lovely Duck Pate on homemade toasts. This was accompanied with some pickled vegetables as well as various types of olives-all very good. I started with an Arugula salad with some Marcona Almonds and cheese shavings-a good foil for my rich main course. For our main courses Mrs. Wineguy enjoyed her Nettles Gnocchi filled with Ricotta which were aided and abetted by chantarelles, carmalized cauliflower and pine nuts-this was a very inventive and wonderful dish. While I somehow found a way to finish what could possibly have been the world's largest and best pork chop! Actually it was a bone-in pork loin chop milanese that was crisp, light and absolutely wonderful! It's sidekick was simply sauteed spinach and I wouldn't have wanted it any other way. We downed a bottle of the rich and earthy Volk Mourvedre with our main courses and were very happy. We finished by splitting the pumpkin bread pudding, which was rich and light all at once-just terrific! We sipped on small glasses of a dessert wine made from Chenin Blanc and all was well with the world. We always enjoy this restaurant. Service is friendly, knowledgeable and attentive. The setting is warm and intimate.
- Pros: Like the title says, "Cozy place, tasty food".
Deranged, angry service
by cynjai
My friend and I went here for a nice Sunday dinner. They sat us at the bar to wait for a table. Two waitresses stood right in front of us saying: "I just got another walk-in, can you believe it." "I know, I'm so fed up. . ." etc. We got our table and waited over an hour for our meals. My pork chop had been sitting under a heat lamp - was dry as an old shoe. The food was a disgrace. Then, the waitress somehow decided I had offended her (neither my friend or I could figure it out). She addressed him only, and when I tried to speak to her she'd turn and walk away in a hormonal fugue. Baffling. We spent a couple hundred bucks to endure the vacuous rage of neurotic 20-something with a chip on her shoulder. In France, they consider service a profession. Maybe this restaurant should advertise for help in the Paris want ads.
Fantastic pasta
by lyss61
I was skeptical because of the "organic" part of this restaurant, but the menu is well-rounded albeit small. I went here for a girls' night and we all loved the cheese plate, olives, and pasta dishes. I kept stealing forkfulls of my roommate's pork and pasta dish because it was absolutely delicious. Best part? The wine flights. a flight of 3 wines for $10-$15. I'll definitely be coming back.
- Pros: Great food and wine
- Cons: Hard to get reservations, have to wait a long time without them
Best fish entree
by 58a
A gem in RH! Truly! The scene was lively, attentive service, and seated right away with no reservation on a busy Sat. evening. I enjoyed one of the best Sea Bass entree that I've had (yet). I've had many fish dishes, but this is one of the best - top three for sure. The service was excellent and good wine selection. I strongly recommend even if a tourist or live outside of neighborhood!
- Pros: Food, service, wine
- Cons: tight space
Great salad and fish, but the toughest steak ever!
by saturn1993
I ate here twice. The first time I enjoyed a very good salad and a wonderful locally caught wild salmon with decent wine.
The second time I had steak. The vegtables and sauce were very good, but the steak was the toughest steak I had eaten in San Francisco. Avoid their steak.
- Pros: Very knoledgable and helpful staff. Interesting menu. Some Very good dishes.
- Cons: Some of their dishes can be very dissappointing.
Small Restaurant, Small Food
by newenglandtransplant
The food is good but too small for what you pay. The restaurant is also small so they've managed to use every piece of real estate even if it's not comfortable for the restaurant patrons. If this set up appeals to you then you should try this spot because the food is good.
- Cons: no parking, small space, small food
Best Organic restaurant in town
by sfdish
We dined here for the first time on Friday, and even though it was very busy, we were greeted right away, and only had to wait a few minutes for our table. The waiter was very attentive without being intrusive, and was very helpful in finding a very affordable wine from the extensive list that went with our dinner. The first courses, a wonderful flavorful potato-parsnip soup and a very inventive green bean salad with a local cheddar cheese were excellent. For the main courses we had grass fed beef short-ribs that were braised in red wine and served with root vegetables (fantastic) and fried rabbit with bloomsdale spinach (very good). The portions were so generous that we had to skip dessert, but we'll try that next time. Overall, great except it is a little small, and a bit noisy, but it was a Friday night.....
- Pros: Food, wine, service
- Cons: noise, small space
Recommend the Lamb
by jah4
I went there a few months ago with several friends. I agree with the other reviews, that the restaurant is too small and cramped (several waiters actually bumped into my friend as they passed her by - she got stuck with the worst seat in the house). But, the food IS worth the visit. I ordered the lamb chops with fava beans, and it was really, really good. I would definitely go again - since it is in the neigborhood, I would probably visit Sunday - Thursday just to avoid the weekend crowds.
subpar food, bad service, too crowded
by bbmar
Very disappointing for what you pay. Don't have the tomato bisque (beyond terrible - lumpy, flavorless), the crusted cod (even worse, salty, oily - DEEP FRIED!! basically a $20 fish stick) or the pumkin ravioli (bland, not good). We stood in the crowded dining room for 30 minutes after our reservation before we were finally seated and not even so much as common courtesy apology from the waitstaff. Maybe we just went on a bad night, but this is one of those places where I wouldn't even give it a second chance.
- Pros: cozy
- Cons: bad food, poor service, overpriced
