Great customer service from Carolina and nice folks in general
by apereviews at Citysearch
I went in there not knowing what to expect as an African American woman with my hair texture. I was leary to go because Carolina was not of African descent, so I doubted her capability to do a good job and understand the difference in textures within the Black Diaspora. But, she did a good job and she was very friendly. Not just friendly but you felt like she was your friend. The prices were higher than I normally pay but I didn't mind paying it because the service was great. I had Ms. Jessie's done to my hair and she explained to be what she was doing so I could go home and do it myself and not be co-dependent on her. SO, basically I received a class and got my hair done. ANd I know I would pay more than what she charged my for a class where I was receiving personal attention, so it was worth it. (Plus she was on time, no food trips, and she took time to get to know you)...
Carolina knows "our" hair well and not only that- she loves it! So, that makes any black woman feels good. It wasn't a hassle for her or she wasn't complaining that I need to relax it since it is all natural but she really just liked doing it and took time to do it well.
I was offered tea, water, and wine while I watied. All the stylists were friendly and made sure when Carolina was out of sight, you were ok!
When I left Carolina, we exchanged hugs and I wished her the best! She is worth it and she cares about what you want..
If you want someone who cares about you and what you want, this is your girl...
Lisa Monda rocks...
by loribeans at Citysearch
I've been seeing Lisa Monda for 8yrs and she rocks...Does fabulous color and cuts and is energetic and fun. One time I got the dates of my appt. wrong and didn't show up -she was so understanding didn't charge me a cancellation fee, I felt so bad. I've been very happy with her overall service and highly recommend her...
- Pros: i like my hair services
- Cons: parking can be hard
BAD service
by kelly_toole at Citysearch
I have to write because I had a 3 strikes experience with the stylist Lisa. Which is really unfortunate because the highlights she gave me were amazing and I really wanted it to work out since the place is just around the corner from my house. First she was almost an hour late to our appointment and didn't call. She did a great job with the color and was gentle and cool. Then, she totally rushed the cut because her next appointment showed up. NOT COOL. She cut these gigantic layers in the front. They were so awful after I washed my hair that I scheduled for her to look at it the following weekend. To this appointment she didn't even show up. She did retun my call about the not showing up and I came by and we determined that she couldn't fix it but would discount my next styling. Which we then scheduled for about 8 weeks later. So here's the final straw - I called because I forgot which day I had scheduled and the receptionist informed me that she was going to take a vacation that day. Lisa never called me to reschedule. I am so offended by the service. I hope that no one else has the same experience as me, but I also hope that Madu you take this as a tip - that is not how you treat a customer and I will tell everyone I know what terrible service I provided.
The MOST CRAPTASTIC hair cut ever recieved
by codieblackson at Citysearch
SIGH... the stylist was friendly, liked to pry a bit but... friendly unfortunately that does not make up for the really crappy hair cut I just got. She gave herself about 30 minutes to do my hair... didn't wash it, cut it dry and did a horrible job flat ironing it. Her products were limited and the product that she did use was only put on one side of my head. I was so mortified that I just asked her to stop so I could put my hoodie on and be on my way. I'm sure she can do certain types of hair but TEXTURED HAIR beware!!! Although this salon is known for doing curly hair... it is NOT for the textured curly haired folk.
I'm so sad their isn't a salon for black woman in this city...
most unflattering hair cut
by oscar725 at Citysearch
the hair stylist was very very nice and since has received so many great reviews so i was very excited to get a hair cut. i didn't need anything drastic, just a trim and a shape. i just don't think she listened to anything that i said which was very disappointing. i told her everything that i liked about my hair- i like it long, i like the layers, have thick hair so you need to thin it, a little bit of bangs are ok but not too much i also told her some other things that she asked about - i rarely use product, i like a wash and go look, i wanted to camouflage my very round face and i wanted something fun and attractive. i think the hair cut would've been perfect on someone else other than me. i ended up with everything that i didn't want - more bangs that needed product in order to hold its shape, shorter layers that accentuated my round face and made my head look big. it is so unflattering i could cry just thinking about it. i'm pretty easy going and have never had this bad of an experience before. when she cut my hair i was turned away from the mirror so i could not see what she was doing half the time. when i saw what she did, it was too late to do anything and i was in such shock that i couldn't really say anthing. i thought that i would feel better the next day but it's still unflattering. the only bright side is that my hair grows fast so hopefully i won't suffer for too long.
- Pros: stylist was very friendly
- Cons: unflattering hair cut

I have been going to Shannon for years, and I am so excited that she is at such a great salon. The atomosphere is so relaxing. It also helps that Shannon is be best stylist I know. I hand out her buisness cards all the time b/c she does such an amazing job with cut and color! If you want to have an amazing, zen hair experience, go see Shannon, you'll love her and never go to anyone else again.
- Pros: highly experienced, friendly, talented

Best place to go if u got curly or nappy hair!!
by cuevas at Citysearch
If u have curly or nappy hair, sistas y hermanas, you have got to go to Madu Salon and see Marie or Carolina. I have gone to a number of both black and traditionally "white" salons---never have I found a salon that genuinely takes clients of all backgrounds, has a peaceful, relaxing holistic vibe and is sensitive to different men's and women's curlykinky hair needs for specific variations of curly hair--whether it's unique locks, braids, twists, or a beautiful blowdry style.
Never have I met somebody who knows how to cut & style my hair like Carolina Madrid does--for all of us out there from multiple backgrounds--Carolina's expertise with curly hair is as yet unsurpassed--unless u get your sister or aunt or somebody in the family who knows how to do your do, if you want to go out to an event, a job entrevista, or just take good care of your beautiful curly hair--you've got to see Carolina. Girl does Devacurl--and the way she cuts it makes me proud of my natural hair!
- Pros: Great skill, creativity, unique products
- Cons: none
Won't go back again!!
by dpb05 at Citysearch
Initially, I was so excited that a salon in SF was experienced in the Devacurl method of cutting hair. I should have known better---only Devachan in NYC knows how to cut curly hair properly. I gave this place a fair chance. The first time I went, Marie cut a bit too much off of my hair, but the cut was decent, so I decided to go back a 2nd time and was more explicit in saying that I only wanted a trim; she did an ok job that time. Then, the 3rd and final time was the absolute worst!!! She cut too much off of my hair AND it was a bad cut! And her solution to managing the straight pieces at the back of my head (underneath the curls) was to cut the back in the shape of a "V". Whaaaaat??!! Who does that?! Now I am left with a suboptimal haircut, and will have to wait to get a decent haircut in a few months. . .when I go back to NY!!!
- Pros: Devacurl products
- Cons: Don't know how to cut curly hair
best place for an expert curly hair cut
by danabutt at Citysearch
if you're not getting your curly hair cut by an expert who knows and understands curly hair, you are not experiencing your full curl-potential. And this is a sad and ugly thing! Curly hair is so awesome, but when it's cut wrong and cared for with the wrong products, it's frizzy, dry, and
shapeless. Boo!
Okay, so I'm not saying I'm the sh*t or anything, but, I do get many compliments on my hair, nearly every day. And while I attribute this some to genetics, most of all, it is due to the skill and precision of Marie France, stylist/owner of Madusalon. I get the Devacut, an innovative style of cutting curls, done on dry hair.
I'm a low-maintenance girl, just wash my hair, use a couple devacurl products, then air-dry, and each day my hair looks just as good as it did the day I got it cut in the salon. I have referred Marie to everyone who has asked, and those smart girls who heeded my advice have not been disappointed! If you consider your curly hair difficult and unmanageable, you have a bad cut. You are not taking full advantage of your curl-potential! If you want awesome curly hair (like mine!) call Marie ASAP. She's friendly and funny to boot.

Very bad haircut
by missclet at Citysearch
Tried this place cause it was close to my house and I didn't want to spend $94 for my old hairdresser. I was so disappointed. I should have known it would be a bad cut judging from the person before me. Was hoppping it was just her hair. I receive a terrible cut. Yes it looked ok walking out because of all the product she put in. But it has been a terrible cut. None of my friends liked it. It looks horrible if I don't curl it with an iron to cover up the bad haircut. I might have save some money but it was not worth it. Even consider paying another place just to fix it. The hairdresser or maybe more of them have no idea what they are doing especially with fine thin hair. One of the worst cuts I have gotten in a long time.
- Pros: Cheaper than most places
- Cons: Unskilled and bad hair cuts - especially for fine hair. Worst cut in years
