Cinco de Mayo Chaos

by ilovespammy

haha this is a pre-review. I haven't actually had the tacos yet because I went yesterday for Cinco de Mayo and Tuesday happy hour from 4-9PM but it was so packed that I was too lazy to try to get a taco. But I did see a bunch of tacos being eaten and they did look delicious.

  • Pros: The tacos looked delicious
  • Cons: I couldn't get my little hands on one!

Great crispy tacos!

by classicchic

This place is always fresh and quick. I love the fish tacos but really everything is good. Try the guacamole too, it's one of the best I've had. This is a great spot for late dining after watching a game or hanging out at Shanghai Kelly's accross the street. Sometimes it's just the simple pleasures like this place that's been around forever.

  • Pros: Great crispy tacos
  • Cons: hard to park in the Polk street area.

Not bad if you're craving mexican in Russian Hill

by ieatallthetime

Nothing special about Nicky's, really, but it's the only place on the north end of Polk where you can get mexican (Panchos is about 6 blocks south). The decor is super lame and the items are a little pricey ($5 for chips and salsa?!?) but the happy hour thing with rouge next door is pretty cool as margs are only $2-3. Also, the staff can be kinda weird but that might be because it's always made busy there. The food is decent - not great, though. Again, more of a location thing than anything else.

Last, I should mention that it's ironic considering the name that their tacos are actually soggy - not crispy at all. Weird.

  • Pros: Location in Russian Hill
  • Cons: Ambiance, soggy "crispy" tacos, wait for service

pescado taco nick's way

by gummieworm

The first thing I think of when I wake up on saturday morning is a pescado taco nick's way. It is perfection. Nick's is not where I would go to when I am craving traditional Mexican food, but it is where I go to when I crave Nick's (which is all the time). The guacamole is good, and the salads look tasty... but to be honest the first thing I had when I dined at Nick's was the fish taco, and I can't seem to go in there without ordering one. This severely limits my ability to try new things from the menu.

Happy hour on Saturday (and maybe every other night of the week for all I know) with $2 margaritas from the bar.

One warning: take-out does not do Nick's justice!

  • Pros: Casual
  • Cons: Parking

I need a fix every now and then...

by 4daychef

They must have a tomato ripening machine or it's someone's job duty...

Fresh, ripe--two words I feel when I chow down the guac and pico de gallo at Nick's. Can't seem to get out of there without ordering chips and salsa or guacamole. Although I like tacos simple--mexico city way (meat, tortilla, onion, cilantro) I have to say, I like it Nick's way too. Carne asada is always flavorful, and it's great to be able to get crisp deep fried fish on my baja tacos. Last time I went the batter was a bit thick, and the grilled shrimp not quite as succulent as eating tacos de camaron in La Paz, but they're still pretty damn good for an american restaurant.

The experience is expensive for simple tacos, but worthy of every penny every now and then.

If you haven't had a taco nick's way, you need to try it at least once.

  • Pros: Nick's way, fresh fresh, well executed food
  • Cons: I wish I worked nearby...evening parking sux

Excellent tacos, salsa and agua fresca; large portions

by ediblecomplex

On a lunchtime craving we took off for Nick's Crispy Tacos, never been but driven past many times. The idea of crispy tacos should make anyone's mouth water! I ordered a Pescado taco, Baja style (battered & fried), and a carne asada taco Nick's way as well as a basket of chips and salsa; my man ordered a pair of the same fish tacos. The basket of chips n' salsa came out as we were waiting to pay- fresh, warm chips piled high with the freshest, reddest and tastiest salsa I've ever had, bursting with tomato-y goodness. We devoured the entire basket.

The fish taco was good- and changed my mind about fish tacos from previous experience (not good). Two large battered chunks of fresh white fish fried and stuffed into a tortilla with shredded cabbage (it comes with cilantro and onions too) and a light limey aioli. Tasty, albeit the batter soaked up way more of the oil than I would prefer. I like fried, but not greasy. The Carne Asada taco Nick's way was sooooo tasty. beans, carne asada, and pico de gallo (more of the fresh salsa) wrapped in a no-too-crispy fried tortilla and melted white cheese, wrapped in a soft tortilla. The meat was a little dry but well seasoned/flavored and the pico de gallo made up for it.

Wash it down with their agua fresca- this place makes the best. I have never had agua fresca with so much fruit flavor- it is usually so watered down and sweetened I can barely tell which fruit they used. I picked strawberry and the straw didn't have any problems picking up the little chunks of fruit in my cup. An awesome lunch, and I would definitely go back again whenever I get the hankering for tacos! large tasty

  • Pros: Great food, great flavors
  • Cons: a little oily on the fish tacos

Best crispy tacos!

by shoegal84

I happened to walk into this place about a year ago and have been in love with it ever since. I wish there were more mexican taco joints in Russian Hill, but this one does the trick! They have delicious asada and chicken tacos, and yummy chips and salsa. Oh, they also serve aguas fresca like I like. Try the watermelon or melon waters if they have them when you come in.

  • Pros: Great food, and served pretty quickly.
  • Cons: Not the cheapest taco in S.F. but worth it.

Best Fish Tacos in the city

by babkina

Try the Pescados - you will not find a better fish tacos in the city. The fish is incredibly fresh, the cabbage slaw is the ultimate accompaniment and the Baja-style sauce adds just the right touch of creaminess and tange.

  • Pros: Great fish tacos, Best value, Fast service

the best taco outside the Mission

by ahchay

"Nick's Way" is the only way to get a taco here. It's hard to vote for a taco in Russian Hill that beats La Taqueria, but if anyone can do it, it's Nick's.

  • Pros: freshness, value, convenience
  • Cons: Cheesy Rouge
