Good Thai in the city!

by TonyTenderoni

I recently moved to San Fran from Seattle and one thing I miss is the great thai place I would frequent on cold days for a bowl of oh-so-good tom yum kung!

I've been on the hunt for a place that measures up and a coworker of mine suggested koh samui

I msut say that their menu is extensive and offers anything and everything you could possibly want when craving thai food!

they also serve some good cocktails during dinner, I usually have TY KU which is perfect at cooling down that palate after those spicy dishes!

I happen to love super spicy food, but for those who dont thay have a milder selection and you can always order anything on the menu in a mild version...

I must admit that most of the btter thai places I've been to dont really worry themselves with decorating, but this place has a modern yet casual feeling to it

The service is decent and the food come out pretty fast...this might be my new thai place!

Service Was Very Poor

by skm916

This previously was one of my favorite neighborhood restaurants. However, tonight, I ordered fresh spring rolls (rice noodles, shrimp and mint leaves), as I have done every time I have eaten at a Thai restaurant, and was brought vegetarian rolls (lettuce, cilantro and tofu). The waiter argued that he had brought spring rolls and that there were shrimp and mint leaves in the rolls. I disected the rolls for him and showed him that they were, in fact, vegetarian rolls...no shrimp, no rice noodles and no mint leaves. He then, once again, brought me vegetarian rolls and we went through this routine a total of 3 times!!! I finally gave up on the fresh spring rolls and ordered another appetizer, which arrived after we had finished our entrees. When the waiter brought us the check, he advised that he had not charged me for the rolls, which I had sent back 3 times and never ate. The situation was totally mishandled in the first place, as he should have ensured that he brought the correct dish and after serving the wrong dish 3 times, he should not have charged me for the appetizer I finally ended up ordering instead. I am really disappointed with the service I received and probably will not be back.

Best Thai food anywhere

by jamesbeswick

I love Thai food. Love it. If there was only one type of food I could eat, it would be Thai. Koh Samui is only 3 minutes from where I live so I eat here ridiculously often. From my many experiences, I would say it has the friendliest and most efficient service in the whole city. It also has hands-down the best curries anywhere (pumpkin curry is to die for and sirloin steak green curry is a definite vice of mine). If it's your first time, be sure to do the following: (1) get the sampler appetizer to try a little of everything - it's well portioned, good value and awesome. (2) Ask the server for recommendations - they all know the menu inside out.

I principally love this place because the food is not oily at all. Too many Thai places throw on the oil as a replacement for freshness and taste. The curries are also very finely balanced so you get to taste the spices and not have your head blown off with chillies. Overall, the food and wine is reasonably priced (although the cocktail prices at the bar are a little steep, bizarrely), and the service is perfectly attentive. One of my favorite restaurants anywhere.

PS - We were there on Valentine's night and their set menu ranks as one of the best meals I've ever had. My wife was pleased with me... which means I am pleased with them :-)

  • Pros: Great thai food, reasonably priced, fantastic service
  • Cons: Cocktail prices at the bar are a little high

the service was friendly and fairly fast. the food was pretty good. my friend enjoyed his beef curry in panang sauce and i enjoyed the grilled pork chops with mango salad. however, if i am back in san francisco, i would probably try a different thai place.

Best Thai food Ever

by eyewell

Four of us went to dinner here and ordered a sampling of appetizers and main courses, and we were blown away. It was DELICIOUS! I highly recommend as starters the Mieung Kum (magical concoction to be eaten on a large spinach leaf, wow!), fried pea shoot salad (one of the specials), and for main courses, the Madame Sea Bass, the Seafood Claypot, and we had a side of the spicy green beans with crushed peanuts. On a previous visit I had also tried something from the specials menu that was a marinated sauteed beef (emperors beef). Half of us liked the fried corn patty starters, others found them too doughy. The chicken curry was "correct" as they say in France (as you would expect). Staff was friendly, and service was prompt. The worst thing about the place is the bar chairs, which I sat on on a previous visit, and both my friend and I found those chairs uncomfortable, digging into the backs of our thighs. So go, try new things, take recommendations from the staff, and some of the above items! It is delicious! One of us walked out saying it was the best Thai food they had ever had, and none of us disagreed, even those of us who had been to Thailand.

Bad Experience! Hair in my drink! Cold Food!

by pickygirlsf

Have been to the place a few times mainly due to convenience. Had ok experience before but this time just did for me. Found my food cold, my husband's drink had a big piece of hair. The worst thing is that when we shared our concern with the waiter politely, he said that all he could do was to say sorry. Then we asked to speak to the manager, apparantely the manager is not there on Sundays. Then the waiter rudely gave us our check and we left our food pretty much untouched. Will not go back again ever ever...

Authentic Thai Food

by robyn74

I felt like I was in Koh Samui...excellent food, excellent service, beautiful decor. Even the dishes were beautiful. We dined as a large group on a weekday but I would definitely consider it for a date night!

trendy thai

by pjlee1971

Fitting in with the SOMA scene, Koh Samui is a very stylish space with some excellent food. The dining room fills up quickly, but the bar usually seems fairly empty. The pumpkin curry is a must, and is the one dish I always get. They do not have as many noodle dishes as other Thai restaurants, but the menu is definitely interesting.

  • Pros: Food, decor
  • Cons: not much

Fantastic curry, nice atmosphere

by shawnleslie

Some friends and I went here for the first time this weekend, and we were not disappointed. We all tried something different, and everything was delicious -- especially the red curry vegetarian dish! The waitress didn't seem very knowledgeable, but was friendly enough. The atmosphere was nice- lively but not too loud. We'll definitely be back !

  • Pros: Great curry! Nice ambience
  • Cons: Mediocre service

The Best Pumpkin Curry

by s891

I am obsessed with this restaurant. The pumpkin curry is to die for. There are big pieces of the pumpkin and the sauce isnt too spicy but has an edge. Delicious peanut beef over wilted spinach leaves. They also have a variety of thai beers to try which is kinda fun. I could eat here every night...

  • Pros: sticky rice is "sticky", anbiance
  • Cons: waitstaff can be slow at times
