I heard this place was good but... We placed an order on 8/7/06 and it never showed up. We waited an hour and 15 minutes before calling. I called for another 1/2 hour and it was busy each time. Then I finally heard a ring, but there was no answer. After 2 hours, we just microwave a dinner, because we were too hungry to do anything else. They NEVER showed up or even called to say they weren't coming. I'm glad we didn't pay with a credit card. I'm also glad there were just two of us and not a big group because you can't have guests waiting 2 hours for food that doesn't show.

Pros: I HEARD the food was good.

Cons: But since the food never showed up, I wouldn't know.

Most Indian places flavor their food using heavy cream and butter, but Alhamra flavors its delicious fare with authentic Indian spices. Therefore, their food is spicy and tasty, but not as heavy as most other Indian restaurants. This is how food is cooked in a traditional North Indian or Pakistani home. Try the matter paneer, it's delicious! Also, the lunch special is a steal at around $5. Enjoy a cup of freshly made (and complimentary) masala chai tea at the end of your meal. This chai is the typical tea served in most Indian homes. Although the service is less-than-friendly, this type of service is what is found in typical restaurants in India. It's a reflection of cultural differences. The service is just as authentic as the food.

Pros: authentic, spicy Indian food at ultra-low prices

Cons: not-so-friendly service

I used to live a few blocks from here, and hence went here ALL THE TIME. The food is fantastic -- especially the vegetarian choices. My favorite is the mutter paneer and the mango lassi. However, service is not the friendliest. I used to come here once a week -- and order the same meal for take-out. Never once did the guy act like he recognized me or he knew what I was going to order. That was a little bizarre. Still, the food here is delicious and cheap, and I highly recommend it. If you order delivery (free!!), the delivery guy was always super sweet. Yummy food. Just don't expect them to be your BFF.

I ordered the chicken tandori and the chicken tikka masala. In both cases, the chicken was of excellent quality and cooked perfectly... very juicy and tender! The chicken tikka masala sauce was fine though not exceptional. About the right spiciness for my requested "medium." Bread was a bit dry, but I had a 15 minute drive home, so perhaps it's tastier when fresh. My to-go stuff was generally packed very well, although there was a bit of juice leakage from the chicken tandori. Only real downside: despite the prominent offer of the Entertainment coupon on the front page here and in the E book, the restaurant no longer accepts that coupon :(

Pros: tasty food, very affordable price, fast service

Cons: Awful parking, sketchy area

Al Hamra is the BEST indian/pakistani place in town. AND the cheapest. I am completely addicted and order in from them three or four times a week now for lunch or dinner. Portion's are generous, they usually deliver within half an hour of ordering, and the prices can't be beat. Our favorites are the Chicken Botti Tikka, Sag Paneer, Aloo Ghobi, and lamb curry. Their samosas rock and they have absolutely the BEST pakora I've ever tasted. The restaurant itself, on 16th, is looking much better these days, but I still think ordering in is the best bet. FYI- If you're more sensitive of stomach, let them know that you'd like your food prepared VERY mildly, as the dishes are typically very, very spicy.

Pros: cheap, delicious, deliver late

They may have painted the walls and tried to gussy up the digs a bit, but unbelievably, they haven't raised the ultra-cheap prices here. OK, so it doesn't have the cute clientele and the ambience of the Pakistani restaurant up the street, but the food here is way better, not to mention cheaper. Try the chicken tikka masala, mutter paneer (peas and cheese in curry sauce) and the aloo nan (bread stuffed with spiced potatoes), then wash it all down with a mango lassi. You'll walk out full and won't drop more than $10.

The service here isn't exactly friendly, but this Indian/Pakistani restaurant offers a fabulous chicken tiki masala, excellent tandoori, many choices of naan (including a version stuffed with delicately spiced potatoes) and a robust menu of vegetarian dishes, including a to-die-for mutter paneer (peas and cheese in curry sauce). Not to mention that the dirt-cheap menu prices haven't budged for years. Despite the relatively recent paint job, the interior still looks a bit stripped down. But if you're looking for fantastic food at a decent price, this is the spot.

Pros: Fabulous food, Cheap prices

Cons: No ambience

Al Hamra seemed to have faced an uphill battle, opening after Pakwan a block away some years ago. They had a huge problem with creating ambiance, but they seemed to have figured that out. Brighter colors, no more fluorescent lighting, music. The food is great, especially the sizzling dishes. And the staff is much friendlier than Pakwan's. They also deliver, which is a good bonus.

Pros: Delivery, Friendly, Sizzling dishes
