Great spot to learn about food too!. I live in the east bay and have access to some great farmers markets here. However, it is always a little treat when I can take in the market at the Ferry Building. If you plan to take BART, make sure to bring a bag that you can carry comfortably or one that has wheels.

This is a great spot to learn about foods you may not have considered before. Just about every vendor there, that I have chatted with, is willing to provide tips on preparing, cooking , and even storing/preserving their particular produce. Timing is everything and I try not to bother them with too many questions when there are lots of folks in line. Its a great place to take kids; especially if they are learning how to cook.

Like shopping at a regular grocery store, take a list and try to stick to it. This farmer's market provides so many options of fresh produce and prepared foods that you can easily walk away with way more than you will need.

So much fun!. This is a really, really great farmer's market! I love walking around the Embarcadero and enjoying the fun samples, delicious food and wonderful produce. If it was a bit cheaper, I would definitely give the farmer's market a full "10". Even so, it's a great place to bring out-of-town guests or to enjoy a Saturday morning date. Going on sunny days can be a bit warm, but partly cloudy days are just perfect.

And here's another tip - Even though, I'm sure the food is probably okay there, I've experienced terrible customer service at the Prather Ranch farmer's market booth several times and would definitely not recommend going there. There are plenty of other more friendly and super-delicious options to choose from!

A permanent European-style market plants itself by the bay.. Facts
After calling Embarcadero Plaza "home" for the past decade, San Francisco's uber-gourmet farmers' market has found permanent pastures. Once a Saturday-only affair, the festivities now take place four days a week, and are afforded the luxury of rain protection in addition to sweeping views of the bay. While Tuesdays and Thursdays provide a showcase for smaller regional farmers, Saturdays remain the main attraction due to live events like Shop with the Chef.

The Experience
High-end organic fruits and vegetables are the focus. Chefs and foodies shop here--regulars are used to spotting Alice Waters comparison-shopping the chard. Many of the finest vendors around the bay run booths here, from Star Route Farms (greens, herbs, specialty lettuces) and Frog Hollow Farms (peaches, pears) to Cowgirl Creamery (artisanal cheeses). Prices are high, but the quality is outstanding.

fun and sun!. I do a bit of shopping here but the number one reason I go is for the absolutely fantastic mexican breakfast booth at the north end of the parking lot. The food is always excellent and the menu varies from week to week so I always have a new dish to try. My friends and I think it's the best place in the city for authentic Mexican food...It is definately a must!

BEST CITY MARKET. This is a market for everyone. Go early as it gets crowded. The produce is wonderful and you can get everything from gourmet cheese to fabulous flowers. I moved from San Francisco to the Pacific Northwest a couple of years ago and still miss this wonderful Sat. Morning Market. The only market that comes close to it is Granville Market in Vancouver. A must for visitors.

over priced, but lots of selection. this is the place to be seen or see other people on Saturday mornings. I go her exclusively for Aidell's sausage; frozen packs 2 for $10 for the summer. Other than that.. you can get same quality and variety of produce from the Alemany farmer's market. You will get gouged by the prices.

Compare. Marshall Farms honey -- 1lb sells for $6.50

while at Alemany, the same honey from another family run farm 1 lbs sells for $2.75.

trust me. go for the frozen Aidell's sausage, but save your $$ and go to Alemany's. Besides the hours at Alemany is much better than Ferry's

Amazing produce. Many people think of a Farmers' Market as just tomatoes and corn. But the variety here is incredible - though the prices are not that much of a bargain. Still, it's amazing to see all the colors and types of fruits and vegetables. This is a true yuppie hangout.
