Romolo's Ice Cream is a cute place in San Mateo near the hillsdale mall that serves traditional italian and sicilian desserts. Their ice creams and cakes are the best I have ever had, but its the cannoli that I love!! Its so nice to eat a cannoli and drink a capuccino. I feel like I am in the old world when I go there. The family that owns Romolo's is really nice too. Oh! I just learned they are going to open this summer, so we can get cannoli and ice cream year round! Sweet Y

Okay, I have to admit, our family has settled into suburban life and it's been a while since we've been to North Beach, so maybe there is a contender there. My husband and I met in Boston, where they have a large Italian population and we used to go for cannolis quite often. I had missed them for years when a random web search for a bakery for a cake yielded this gem! It's a mom and pop shop with a non-chain atmosphere. They make several different varieties of cannoli, but my favorite is the traditional. They also sell a great tiramisu, specialty Italian cakes and spumoni. Save the BART fare and go down the street.
